Are you on the 'Do Not Call List'?
Despite battles in Congress and the courts, the National Do Not Call List is still up and running. The issue got a lot of attention several months ago but with winter upon us, that 6-9 p.m. time slot has most of us indoors and within range of telemarketers. The Connecticut Do Not Call List has recently been combined with the National Registry. If you already signed up through the Connecticut Registry, your name has automatically been added to the National List. According to the government website, the National Do Not Call Registry gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home. Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for three months. If they do, you can file a complaint at www.donotcall.gov. You can register your home or mobile phone for free and your registration will be effective for five years. For more information on who can still call, please consult the CTstate or national site.

Flu Shots Strongly Recommended
The Center for Disease Control says the flu vaccine is the best way to prevent infection with the flu virus and the complications associated with the flu. If you haven't gotten your flu shot yet, you have one last chance for a shoreline clinic. The VNA Services has its final flu and pneumonia vaccine clinic scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 11 at St. Margaret's Church in Madison. The church is located at 24 Academy Street and the clinic runs from 10 to 1 p.m. For seniors 65 and over, bring your Medicare Part B Card or HealthNet Smart Choice card. The VNA has contracted with the following insurance plans to provide their members who are under 65 with vaccination: Anthem Blue Cross and ConnecticCare. For those without insurance coverage, cost for the Flu Vaccine will be $18 and for the Pneumonia Vaccine $28. The VNA requests you bring your insurance card and wear a short sleeved shirt.

The VNA also has blood pressure screenings on Tuesdays from 8:30-11:00 a.m. The local Madison office is located at 560 Durham Road.
