Girls Basketball Falls to North Branford

North Branford defeated Haddam-Killingworth, 70-64, in the away contest.
Kristen Hesko was high scorer for the Cougars with 26 points, hitting 5 three-point shots. Haddam-Killingworth's record is 0-2. North Branford is 1-1.

Killingworth Lions Club Christmas Tree Sale



The Killingworth Lions Club is holding its annual Christmas tree sale Saturdays and Sundays until Christmas. The sale is located at the Route 80/81 circle.

Art Center's Orgami Program at the Library





The Art Center at Killingworth had a great turnout for its first of three origami programs. Children and adults worked with volunteers to create origami ornaments to take home or place on the library mobile. The Art Center set up a display case with a variety of different origami shapes and the library set out origami books. The program runs 10:30-12:30 at the Killingworth Library, Saturdays, Dec. 20 and 27.

HK Recreation Announces Winter/Spring Programs
The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department winter/spring brochures will be mailed the week of December 15. In-person registration, available for residents, will take place Wednesday, Jan. 7 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm at Burr Elementary School and Thursday, Jan. 8 from 3:00 - 6:00 pm at the HK Recreation Office. The brochure features programs for pre-school, youth, teens and adults. You can download the brochure and get complete registration information from their website or by calling 860.345-8334.

KES Principal Resigns to Take University Position



Dr. Maureen Fitzpatrick announced her resignation as principal at Killingworth Elementary School, Wednesday, to accept a position at Sacred Heart University. Fitzpatrick plans to leave KES January 31, 2004. Rita Peretto, KES assistant principal will be Interim Principal and the Board of Education will hire a retired elementary school principal to serve as interim assistant principal. In the announcement to parents, Dr. Fitzpatrick said her primary responsibility at Sacred Heart will be teaching graduate students in the certification and sixth year degree in educational leadership. She said, "it is a wonderful opportunity for me to do what I have always loved doing; teaching". " In addition" she said, " this new journey will allow me to spend more time with family and friends as well as pursue other life interests".

Fitzpatrick said she will be available to serve as interim superintendent if needed, when Dr. Robert Goldman, the interim superintendent, leaves on January 31.

Dr. Fitzpatrick concluded by saying," Killingworth is a beautiful community with warm, caring people who are committed to quality education. I have so enjoyed working with you throughout the years on a multitude of endeavours, all of which have had a positive impact on our learning community. I leave with wonderful memories, strong friendships and the knowledge that KES is in great hands and moving forward."

Superintendent Candidates' Visits Scheduled
Regional School District 17 Board of Education has announced the public meeting dates for superintendent candidates. Dr. Richard N. Johns is scheduled to be in town December 15 and Gary Mala is scheduled for December 17. The meetings are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will be held in the Haddam-Killingworth High School Media Center.

Dr. Richard Johns, is currently the Superintendent of Schools in Newburgh, New York. He was a superintendent in Ames, Iowa, as well as in Gibraltar and Galesburg, Mich. and in Strawberry Point, Iowa. Johns has been a superintendent since 1980.

Gary Mala is currently Superintendent of Schools in the Southwick-Tolland Regional School District and the Granville Public Schools in Massachusetts. He has held this position since 2000. Previously, Gala was the high school principal and elementary principal in Naugatuck, Conn., and Director of Special Sevices in Bethany, Conn.

Haddam Junior Women's Club Holds Children's Holiday Party
The annual children's holiday party will be held Saturday, Dec. 13 from 10:00 a.m -12:00 at the Haddam Youth Center in Higganum. The party will feature crafts, activities and refreshments. Admission is free. Children may have their picture taken with Mr. and Mrs. Claus for a $3.00 donation. Raffle tickets will be given for each non-perishable food item donated for the local food bank. The Youth Center is located in the Old Firehouse on Candlewood Hill Road, Higganum.

HK Swimmers Honored at League Championships
Six Haddam-Killingworth girls swimmers were awarded All-Nutmeg honors last month at the league championship meet in Middletown according to the Clinton Recorder. HK girls finished 9-1 in league, placing second behind champion Farmington. H-K also finished second in the Class S State championship meet.

HK Girls Basketball Falls to Coginchaug.
The Haddam-Killigworth girls basketball team fell to Coginchaug, 48-31, last night in a shoreline conference matchup.

Region 17 Superintendent Search Finalists Announced
The search for a successor to Katherine Kussy as superintendent of the Haddam Killingworth school system has been narrowed to a superintendent of the Newburgh, N.Y., school system, or a chief administrator for the Southwick-Tolland, Mass., Regional School District according to the New Haven Register and the Hartford Courant.

Events at the Library Rescheduled
The Art Center at Killingworth's Origami program has been extended to included December 27 from 10:30-12:30. The dates for the program are Dec. 13, 20 and now the 27th. Donations to help defray the cost of materials is greatly appreciated.

The Chamber of Commerce 'Pictures with Santa' has been rescheduled for Wednesday Dec. 17 from 5:00 -7:00 p.m.

Both events will be hosted at the Killingworth Library.

Local Farmers Moving to Higganum
The Ghilardi family is selling their 64.8 acre farm on Schnoor Road and moving to a 55-acre property in Higganum called Partridge Hollow according to the Clinton Recorder.

Public Information Meeting on Middle School Delayed
First Selectman David Denvir stated at the board of selectmen meeting, Monday, that January would be the earliest date for an informational meeting on the proposed middle school according to the Hartford Courant.

All-Area Field Hockey Team Announced
The 2003 All-Area Field Hockey Team included two players from Haddam-Killingworth High School.
Kelly Devlin, a senior was also named first-team All-Shoreline and led the Courgars to the conference title.
Candice Webber, also a senior, is a two-time, first-team all-state and all-conference selection. Webber led the conference in points and tied the H-K scoring record this season with 14 goals and 18 assists.
