A Great Chance to View Saturn Tonight

The planet Saturn will be in opposition tonight from 8:00 P.M.- 4:00 A.M. For astronomy buffs, this means the best chance in 30 years to view the fabulous rings of the sixth closest planet to the sun. An object is at opposition when the Sun is on one side of the Earth and the object is on the opposite side. The result is that the object is fully illuminated by the Sun and appears like a disk. This year's opposition will reveal an optimal view of Saturn and its rings with little or no shadowing on the planet and nearly optimal brightness. With a telescope as small as 50mm you should be able to see the planet and its rings. Saturn can be seen in the Northern Hemisphere and according to NASA, at a magnitude of -0.3, a diameter of 20.7" and a declination: +23 degrees. For more information on Saturn look at these websites.

Lifeguard Honored by State

Killingworth resident Tina Grice, 18, is being honored today by the Department of Environmental Protection for her heroic actions last summer as a rookie lifeguard at Hammonasset Beach State Park. DEP Commissioner Arthur J. Rocque Jr. and Deputy Commissioner David K. Leff will present official commendations for outstanding service to 15 state lifeguards, including Grice, at 1:00 p.m. at the DEP headquarters in Hartford. Grice, who received her lifeguard training through the HK Recreation certification program, is currently a freshman at the University of Vermont.

The teamwork and camaraderie are what Grice likes best about being a lifeguard. She said the system is built on everyone working together and this time was no exception. The 6-year-old girl rescued was playing in the water with her father when Grice came on duty to relieve another guard. No sooner had she taken her position, but Grice noticed that the young girl's father was moving out to deeper water and the girl looked uncomfortable. Grice said the girl was not far from her and she could see her lower body sink and the girl start to flail. With her father's back turned, the girl panicked and that is when Grice "jumped chair" and raced to save her." Better safe than sorry", said the first-year guard. Lifeguards are trained to scan the area from chair to chair so, as soon as Grice left her station, her captain to her right was alerted. By the time Grice got the girl to shore, both the captain and her boss were there to help. Grice says a lifeguard's top priority is to get the victim to safety and make sure they are okay. A lifelong swimmer, as well as a varsity soccer and track athlete while at Haddam-Killingworth High School, Grice plans to continue being a lifeguard during her summers home from college.

The program is the creation of Connie Connor of Essex, and Gayle Bergen, a teacher at Killingworth Elementary School according to the Clinton Recorder.
