Board of Selectmen Meeting Time Changed
Monday's Board of Selectmen's meeting has been changed to 10:00 A.M. This is the first meeting of the New Year. The agenda is posted. 2003-2004 Constituent Survey
State Representative Brian O'Connor recently sent out a survey asking residents for their opinion on priority spending, revenue issues, cell phone use, health care, and property tax. The following is the letter accompanying the survey.
Dear Friends, The past legislative session was the most difficult we have encountered in recent years. A decrease in revenue created significant budget deficits, even with spending severely limited or cut in many areas. While it appears that the economy is beginning to improve slightly, the prospect for this coming legislative session will continue to require more difficult decisions in order to keep the budget balanced and provide the quality of life our citizens deserve. I will continue to work hard and focus on the issues you have shared with me over the past five years, but I need your help to do my job well. Please take a few minutes to complete this brief survey. Your responses will help me make informed decisions on tough issues ahead. It has been my honor to represent the 35th district for the last three years, and I will continue to do my best for you. Please feel free to call, write or email me about these or any other issues. Very truly yours, Brian O'Connor Friday, January 09, 2004Cougars Pull Out Double-Overtime Win
Tyler Riordan came off the bench tonight to sink the game-winning shot at the buzzer to give the Haddam-Killingworth boys basketball team a, 70-69, victory over Old Saybrook. The enthusiastic HK crowd could barely contain itself when, tied at 68-68, Old Saybrook went one up on the front end of a 1-1 foul. But, the missed second shot was retrieved by the Cougars. With one second left on the clock, senior captain Cory Riordan, under heavy defensive pressure, made the pass to younger brother Tyler, who put up a gentle jump shot to win the game. HK had three starters foul out during the two overtime periods so it was up to the bench, and stars Cory Riordan and Matt Finlayson, to seal the victory. The elated crowd stormed the court as the final jumper hit and celebrated with the undefeated Cougars. Cory Riordan was high scorer tonight with 20 points followed by Finlayson with 17, including 3, three-pointers, and Ryan Murray who chipped in 14 points. But part of the glory has to go to Connor Wells, whose foul shot, tied the game to put the team into double overtime. The Cougars remain perfect for the season at 6-0. Old Saybrook was led by Cassius Chaney with 23 points and Mike Hunnewell with 17.
In junior varsity action, Tyler Riordan was high scorer with 17 points, but the Cougars came away with their first defeat of the season, losing 57-61. Perry Pratt also played well for HK scoring 10 points. Eric Pellot was high scorer for the JV Rams with 18 points. Images from the Varsity Game

Wednesday, January 07, 2004HKTV Telethon Raises Record Donations For Hometown Heros
The 14th Annual HKTV Telethon raised over $13,000 for the Connecticut National Guard Family Program. Donations will go to support the families of the 1700 Connecticut military deployed overseas. CNG Director of Communications Major John Whitford said he appreciated the outstanding support and hard work of the HK students. He had a chance to meet some of the students at a holiday party in early December, and was impressed with the way the selection process was handled. Whitford said the funds will be directed towards the CNG Foundation established by Major General William A. Cugno, Adjutant General of Connecticut. The foundation aims to ease the financial hardship on CNG families by bridging the gap between civilian and military salaries. The telethon is organized by HK Video Communications Director, Chuck Lewis, but the 100+ students involved make many of the decisions throughout the process, including determining which organization gets the funds. The Connecticut National Guard Program was one of several finalists that made a presentation to the faculty and students. Lewis said that each year around September, students begin work on the production and start hearing proposals from organizations that hope to be the beneficiary of the telethon. Last year, the broadcast raised funds for the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven and in 2001, for the Make A Wish Foundation. The process of putting on the telethon involves several departments in the high school. Lewis said that in addition to the video communications class, a business and marketing class raised funds, wrote press releases and publicized the event to the community and an art production class made posters. The 8 hosts of the program, "dressed to impress", were from both the high school and middle school this year. The two middle school girls, chosen to host, auditioned in front of their peers and middle school faculty to earn the coveted positions. The telethon aired live Dec. 23 and was rebroadcast through Jan. 5 on Comcast Public Access Ch. 18. HKTV is the base for all programs on the educational access channel. Lewis said that the station regularly broadcasts to 12 area towns and has an estimated audience of 60,000 viewers. High Resolution Photos From Mars
![]() NASA released a mosaic of photos taken by the Mars Exploration Rover, Spirit, yesterday. The color images in the mosaic are the highest-resolution pictures ever sent from Mars, more than three times as detailed as images from Mars Pathfinder in 1997. Spirit's panoramic camera took 12 contiguous frames that the camera team combined into the mosaic according the a NASA press release. "This is the day we've been waiting for," said Dr. Jim Bell of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., leader of the panoramic camera team. The scene in the photo shows the edge of Spirit's lander platform up to the sky. Spirit's landing area is within Gusev Crater. The other area of interest right now for the NASA team is an area nicknamed "Sleepy Hollow" because of the scientist's lack of sleep. It is a surface depression that measures about 30 feet in diameter and scientists theorize that this is either an impact crater or a product of wind erosion. Spirit's twin rover, Opportunity, lands on Jan. 24. The MER website shows the 3-D images of the surface released Sunday as well as the full color panoramic views released Monday. Sunday, January 04, 2004NASA's Mars Excursion Rover Lands on Martian Surface
![]() The New Year brings NASA new success with the landing of the first of two rovers on Mars. The rover 'Spirit' landed Saturday and immediately began transmitting images. Its twin 'Opportunity' will land on the other side of the planet. According to NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe, "the rovers will soon begin their mission to search the rocks of Mars for signs that water may have been present for long periods of time. Signs that may tell us whether Mars could have been hospitable to life in the past." NASA has set up several excellent websites for those interested in following the rover missions and finding out more about the Red Planet. Mars Exploration Rover Mission: Includes great sections for kids and students. NASA M2K2: A Flash feature about roaming the red planet. This is an excellent visual experience that requires Flash 6 capabilities. Detailed Information on Mars ![]() This is one of the first images beamed back to Earth after the MER Spirit landed on Mars. 2003 was a difficult year for NASA. The loss of the Columbia Shuttle and crew as well as two pilots involved in debris recovery in East Texas left the NASA family in a deep sorrow according to NASA administrators. According to O'Keefe, NASA is energetically approaching return to Shuttle flight operations, completion of the International Space Station and scientific exploration in a safe, milestone driven manner. NASA continues to strive to understand and protect the Earth; explore the universe; search for life; and inspire the next generation of explorers, as only NASA can. |
