Nancy Kelly, who passed away Feb. 1, was a long-time teacher who inspired and directed the construction of the Outdoor Classroom in the courtyard of Killingworth Elementary School. This essay was written in memoriam by Nancy Arendholz.
The morning sun rises upon a majestic boulder in the Killingworth Elementary School's Outdoor Classroom. On that boulder bears a plaque with the name: Nancy Kelly. The plaque welcomes all who enter into the garden paradise that is Mrs. Kelly's legacy. Mrs. Kelly's love of beautiful flowers, plants and all the wonders of nature are alive in the KES Outdoor Classroom. It was her dream to have a special place for the children to learn from and explore nature in an outdoor, hands on setting. With Carol Campbell's original ideas and landscaping designs, the Outdoor Classroom really took off. Through Mrs. Kelly's fund-raising, grant searching, back-breaking efforts, she and her co-workers, friends and KES parents, made this dream a reality. She had a knack for drawing people in, subtle guidance, intuitive ways that had you volunteering for committees before you knew what hit you. Enjoying it to boot!

Today you can see students performing science experiments, math exercises, and creating beautiful works of art in this special place. Alpacas have sheltered under the overhang on the "Festival of the Arts" day. Teachers and staff have lunch outside among gentle blowing winds and the serene setting, offering a well deserved respite from active children and busy schedules. Rabbits have been seen in the courtyard. Bluebirds, Hummingbirds and Cedar wax-wings have been known to visit. Children run through the meadow, arms outstretched like they're flying on the wings of butterflies. The flowers are native to Connecticut. Purple Asters, yellow yarrow and white daisies create a New England setting.

Mrs. Kelly was from New England stock. She was born in Dexter, Maine. A true lobster loving, no nonsense, salt of the earth, down home New Englander. Her tongue could be quick and sharp, but so were her hugs and her loyalty. She loved to read, she loved Raggedy Ann dolls, and her Miniature Schnauzer, Murphy. She adored her twin grand babies, Natalie and Matthew. I hope someday that they can appreciate how much she loved them. Her son David was a special comfort to her. Her daughter Terry and she didn't always see eye to eye, but they had a special bond.

She was my friend and I'll miss her. I believe that I'm a better person because of her. Ever the teacher; she taught me tolerance towards people, even when they would drive me crazy. She showed me that I didn't need to jump on the band wagon, even if it might be an easier route to go. She was a fighter right to the end. I'll always admire her strength.

Come spring, the gardens at Killingworth Elementary School's Outdoor Classroom will come alive with the buds popping out of the mountain ash, the shoots of the asters will come peeping through the ground. With each purple hue and yellow glow, you will find Nancy Kelly, her warmth and presence alive in the garden.

Democratic Presidential Primary Forum
The Killingworth Democratic Town Committee held a meeting, Sunday, for representatives of the Democratic presidential primary candidates in the Killingworth Firehouse. According to its press release, Cathy Iino, Chairwoman of the KDTC, stressed the importance of the November elections and the March 2, Democratic Primary. Representatives for five of the candidates gave a ten-minute presentation followed by a question and answer period.

John Edwards' campaign was represented by 20-year-old Jay Riddle who drove in from Shelton to support Edwards', "two Americas" campaign theme. According to the release, Riddle has taken time off from college to earn enough money to continue his education in Connecticut where tuition is on the rise. He is going to be laid off from his present job and is finding it very difficult to get another.

Killingworth's Rose Alberini, a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union, argued the case for Dennis Kucinich. With her union facing a 50% unemployment rate in Connecticut, Alberini supports Kucinich's plans for universal health care and the rebuilding of America's infrastructure. Michelle Montavon and Brian Albano from New London were passionate in their support of Kucinich's courage and honesty. They said the press is not giving Kucinich adequate coverage and that the diversity of candidates in the primaries is healthy for the political process.

Wesley Clark's campaign was presented by Tony Barnes and Kate Swift. They emphasized his military and diplomatic experience in many parts of the world and the fact that he speaks four languages. In addition, they said he has a thorough knowledge of the history and the cultures of Middle Eastern countries.

Diane Stock, a member of the Haddam Democratic Town Committee, represented John Dean. She underscored his proven ability to balance a state budget and provide health care to the majority of Vermont's citizens. Stock said that Dean supports programs that keep the middle class strong and that his call for balanced budgets will garner Republicans votes.

From Glastonbury, Brenda Hamilton and long time political activist Nick Paindiris spoke for the John Kerry candidacy. They said Kerry is the candidate who can best neutralize President George Bush on the issue of terrorism. Both said Kerry is the most electable of the candidates, and one whose long U.S. Senate experience makes him familiar with the way things work in Congress. Brian O'Connor, State Representative from District 35, also participated in the event.

Inner Navigation: Why We Get Lost and How We Find Our Way
By Erik Jonsson
ISBN: 07432-22067

Have you ever:
been disoriented when you come up from the subway?
lost your way in the interior hallways of a building?
had a sense that the train you were riding was headed the wrong way?

This fascinating book, written for the nonscientist, delves into the question of how we find our way through various landscapes and cityscapes. Erik Jonsson, a Swedish-born engineer, grew up finding his way through the forests of Sweden. Intrigued by how the human sense of direction works, he has studied navigation of the physical world on both land and sea.

Jonsson is a gifted storyteller, and uses this medium to describe and illustrate how the brain situates us in space - what cues the brain uses to create cognitive maps that guide us in later visits. He explores how we cue off the angle of the sun, the direction of the wind, patterns in the desert sand, or, in an interesting underwater example, the direction the tide is moving the vegetation beneath the surface of the water. An astonishing example of human navigation is found in Jonsson's recounting of a tale of Eskimos paddling through thick fog, using their voices in song to bounce off the fjords to give them a sense of their distance from shore.

If you've ever had the feeling you have been walking in circles, Inner Navigation can help you understand why. Reading it will change the way you look at your own way-finding system, and stimulate thought on how you use and respond to navigational cues.
