Selectmen to Weigh Dog-Limit Appeal
According to the Hartford Courant, the Board of Selectmen will decide on Monday if the town will appeal the Middlesex Superior Court decision that blocked the town's effort to limit the number of dogs resident Nicole Bartner Graff could keep on her property. The town would be joined in the appeal by two of Graff's neighbors. A noise complaint from one of the neighbors originally brought this matter to the town's attention. The Town's Planning and Zoning Commission wanted to limit the number of dogs a property own could have to four. Graff had 14 dogs at the time of her application to the Zoning Board of Appeals; she now has 22 dogs on her property.

Superintendent Thanks Community For Support
Region 17 Schools Superintendent Gary Mala and the Board of Education were successful in passing the $28.2 million budget at referendum, Tuesday. In office for only two months, Mala has made significant progress on the several major tasks he inherited: the proposed budget from Interim Superintendent Dr. Robert Goldman; three principal vacancies and the start of construction on a new regional middle school. The 2004-2005 budget passed and last month Mala announced the appointment of Charles Macunas as the high school principal: The two elementary school principal appointments should be announced within two weeks. As he moves on to the next items on his agenda, Mala has paused to thank the community for its show of support.

Dear Residents, Parents, Faculty, and Staff:
I wish to take this opportunity to thank all of you who demonstrated your support for the school district's operating budget for the 2004-2005 fiscal year. This support will enable us to continue with our overarching goal of providing the highest quality educational programs and services to our children in the most economical, efficient and educationally sound manner.

In closing, I wish to reiterate what I included in my first correspondence to you in March of this year. The Board of Education and the Regional School District No. 17 community are committed to achieving their identified goals and to promoting and supporting a new beginning. As your Superintendent, I stand committed to serving you, the communities of Regional School District No. 17, in a manner that engenders support for one another and all of our work together.

May our work together continue to be focused on the betterment of all children.
Gary S. Mala

Passing: When People Can't Be Who They Are
by Brooke Kroeger
ISBN: 1891620991

What is the meaning of the word "passing" as it applies to a person blending into society? Is the act of "passing" sometimes necessary and understandable, or is it a deceitful way of living one's life? Is the term a derogatory one? Many of us have likely met someone who was gender passing, class passing, or age passing, and we were unaware of it.

Brooke Kroeger, a journalism professor at New York University, delves into the concept of assuming (or allowing others to believe in) an identity that is not entirely true. Kroeger begins by defining the term, and through several case studies explores the issues each of these individuals faced in their particular situation. The individuals interviewed include a black screenwriter passing as a Jew, a young white school-teacher living in the South passing as black, a gay Jewish rabbinical student and a lesbian military officer passing as straight, and a male poet who passes (online) as a woman.

Kroeger's straightforward writing style and compassionate point of view help the reader understand what it means to be "the other" and also the feelings of disenfranchisement that people outside the mainstream can experience. Passing is a fascinating and eye-opening book, exploring core questions of self and identity.
