The 5.25 million Killingworth Recreational Complex plan will go to a Town informational meeting and referendum by November 22 according to today's Hartford Courant. The Board of Selectmen approved the new scaled-back version on August 23 and the Board of Finance approved the 20-year bonding plan on Tuesday night. First Selectman David Denvir said Monday that Town Clerk Susan Adinolfo could not authorize a referendum within one week prior to the Nov. 2 elections, and two weeks following, because the voting machines need to be prepared and then sealed according to state law. According to the Courant article," the Board of Selectmen agreed at a special meeting Wednesday to focus community debate in the coming weeks on the Bosco project and not consider any other possible land acquisitions until after the referendum". At Monday's BOS meeting there was discussion of how the negotiations for the 260-acre Venuti property effected the outcome of May 2003 referendum on the project. That referendum failed by 71 votes. The new scaled-back plan redesigned by Clough Harbour & Associates is essentially the same as the original without the southernmost all-purpose field adjacent to the Beechwood Community. Dudek Appointment Unchallenged
Killingworth residents had 15 days following the appointment of Fred Dudek to present a petition for a special election to fill the vacated Selectman's seat. The deadline passed on Wednesday and according to the Hartford Courant, no petition was requested from Town Clerk Susan Adinolfo. Selectman Louis Annino, Sr. indicated at several Selectmen's meetings that he was refusing to discuss priorities in the appointment process, or appoint a Republican nominee, so that the deadlines could pass and a special election could be called. Dudek was appointed by a panel of Republican elected officials on Aug. 31. He is an unaffiliated voter and will serve out the remainder of Republican Selectman Charles Morgan's term which ends in November 2005. Thursday, September 16, 2004OBITUARY

The Killingworth Board of Selectmen, Planning & Zoning Commission, Inland Wetlands Commission and Conservation Commission invite you to attend a presentation by the Non-point source Education for Municipal Officials (NEMO) program coordinator John Rozum, on Monday, September 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Town Offices.
The NEMO program of the University of Connecticut's Cooperative Extension System is funded through a partnership with the CT Department of Environmental Protection's Nonpoint Source Program, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region One. It is an award-winning research and outreach program for local land use decision makers that "addresses the links between land use and natural resource protection". The services range from open space planning and regulation review to natural resource inventory and GIS computer models of a full town build-out scenario based on current zoning regulations.
In April of 2004, The Killingworth Board of Selectman approved moving forward with an application to the NEMO program. Killingworth is one of 15 communities, state wide, chosen to participate in this program meant to "guide communities through the implementation of land management policies and practices to reduce polluted stormwater runoff, and protect natural resources while encouraging sustainable development". Please join the Board of Selectman and dedicated volunteers working on behalf of Killingworth through our local land use commissions, as we learn more about planning for the future and our common good. For more information contact Conservation Commission Chairman David Gumbart at 663-2425. Career Day Planned For High School
Haddam-Killingworth High School would like to bring the 'real world' to the ninth through eleventh grade students this winter via a Career Fair as part of an initiative to create a connection between education and the career world. The event is tentatively planned for February, and organizers hope to have about 50 volunteers speak with small groups of students about their careers. Presentations will be brief (15 minutes) and will take place between 12:00 noon and 2:10 p.m. This will allow speakers to have an opportunity to meet with several different groups of students and be treated to lunch. In order to provide this activity, the staff needs the support of parents and area businesses. If you are interested in speaking or have a suggestion for a speaker please contact Marcia Catalano, Student Transition Facilitator at Haddam-Killingworth High School, 95 Little City Road, P.O. Box 568, Higganum, CT 06441 or at catalanom33@rsd17.org. Scheduling will begin as soon as possible and final details will be made in late fall. Freshmen Welcomed with Food and Open Arms

![]() Tuesday, September 14, 200416th Annual Project Graduation Gets Underway
Plans for the annual all-night party for the members of the Haddam-Killingworth High School graduating class are about to begin for the class of 2005. Last year over 95 percent of the graduates attended the Henry VIII and ½, all-(k)night party . Statistics have shown that the night of high school graduation is often a dangerous one for seniors. The use of alcohol is high and this results in a higher than usual number of alcohol-related accidents. Project Graduation gives HK students an opportunity to party all night long in a safe alcohol-free environment. The cost to prepare and accomplish this yearly event is approximately $100 per student. Although HKHS and Regional School District 17 support this event, they do not finance Project Graduation. The funding needed comes from the Fall wrapping paper fundraiser and generous donations made by local businesses, service organizations, parents and private donors. The success of this event is dependent on the participation of the whole community and the hard work of the volunteers. There are many openings and opportunities to help with this event; any amount of time is appreciated. For more information, or to volunteer please call the chairpersons listed below. Main Committee: Chairperson: Nancy Bradley 663-2485. Decorations Committee: Needs Chairperson Food Committee: Lynn MacLennan 345-4155 and Laurie Armstrong 345-4283. As the self-professed "new kid on the block", newly appointed Selectman Fred Dudek was brought up to speed on several town issues and had a chance to hear from some of the regulars, at last night's Board of Selectmen's meeting. Dudek also had a chance to weigh in on the controversial road striping issue. He said, as someone who has to drive an 8-foot firetruck down those roads, he "appreciates those lines". Dudek said the Selectmen could certainly revisit the reasons why certain roads were targeted for striping, but declined to take the issue to a town meeting where a vote could overturn the Selectmen's decision. He said he was concerned that calling for a town meeting on a safety issue would set a bad precedent. He said safety issues should be decided by the Board of Selectmen and not in a public forum. Dudek, who is also the town Fire Chief, was sworn into office by his wife, Town Treasurer and Assistant Town Clerk, Linda Dudek on September 1. Dudek fills the Selectmen's seat vacated by Republican Charles Morgan on July 30. ![]() Monday, September 13, 2004 Four Seasons on the Organ Concert

by Linda Campbell, Bruce Campbell, Dee Dickinson ASIN: 0205293484 Most people have at least one area or discipline for which they feel an affinity. It may be discovered in something that they find easy to learn, or that somehow speaks to them. Some individuals are good at learning music, while others draw well. Some folks are aces at reading maps; others are charismatic in dealing with the people around them. Dr. Howard Gardner of Harvard University studied human cognition for many years and based his theory of multiple intelligences on eight "intelligences", expanding beyond the basic academic intelligences. Gardner's intelligences include the following:
Logical-mathematical intelligence - the ability to calculate and quantify Spatial intelligence - thinking in three-dimensional ways Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence - manipulating objects and fine-tuning physical skills Musical intelligence - sensitivity to pitch, melody, and rhythm Interpersonal intelligence - understanding and interacting effectively with others Intrapersonal intelligence - the ability to know oneself Naturalist intelligence - observing patterns in nature In Teaching and Learning Through Multiple Intelligences, the authors build upon the work of Howard Gardner and offer practical and engaging classroom applications of his multiple intelligence theory. They provide ways to teach to each of the intelligences and to help develop the various intelligences in all students. While intended for classroom use, the principles in this clearly written workbook could be used at home with family, and also be of value in the workplace.
