Governor's Prevention Partnership Honors O'Connor
The Connecticut Mentoring Partnership, a program of The Governor's Prevention Partnership, recently presented State Representative Brian O'Connor with an award recognizing his commitment to mentoring. "Although his legislative responsibilities representing Clinton, Killingworth and part of Westbrook have kept him quite busy, we're delighted that Representative O'Connor has still found time to devote as a mentor," says president Susan K. Patrick of The Governor's Prevention Partnership.

While legislative sessions find him occupied as a member of the General Assembly's Appropriations, Public Safety, and Higher Education and Employment Advancement committees, he still looks forward to spending time with the 7th-grader whom he mentors at Clinton's Jared Eliot Middle School.

O'Connor is one of several state legislators who has worked with The Governor's Prevention Partnership by helping to promote mentoring through personal commitment.

Yanks Top Sox For Favorite Town Team
Both the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox have made it into the post season, but poll results say the men in pin stripes are Killingworth's favorite team. 69% of voters favored the Yankees in the 'just for fun' poll. In typical Yankee style, the Bombers won the American League Eastern Division title, and their 100th win last night, with a bottom of the ninth walk-off homer from Bernie Williams. Fans on both sides have to scratch their heads wondering how they keep doing that. The Red Sox clinched the wild card spot earlier in the week and though Pedro has struggled in his last few starts, no one doubts that healthy pitching combined with their hitting lineup will keep them in contention. One broadcaster said Pedro's final pitch in his last start was clocked at 93 mph. Thank you all for the wonderful anecdotes from your favorite team. What was common to all was that the fondest memories involved family or friends, and rarely considered the outcome of the game. Each one brought a smile to my face thinking about how a baseball memory can stay fresh for a lifetime. Enjoy the postseason, and for all the Mets fans who didn't have much to cheer about this season, remember pitchers and catchers report in only 4 ½ months.

Pay As You Throw Committee Survey II
Killingworth has registered the greatest increase in recycling among area towns when comparing the last two fiscal years, according to just released figures from statewide solid waste management authority Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority. Killingwort's 35% increase leads all nine towns served by the Essex Waste Transfer Station. When comparing Fiscal Year 2004, which ended June 30, to Fiscal Year 2003, in towns served by the Essex facility, Killingworth's number one position was far ahead of second place Old Saybrook. Old Saybrook's 23% recycling improvement is followed by Essex and Guilford, which saw their numbers go up by nearly 11% and 10% respectively. The remaining five communities in the nine town region experienced a drop in recyclables processed at the Essex Transfer Station.

Killingworth's efforts to reduce solid waste volume and increase recycling appear to be working. During the April to June period, there was a 17% reduction in the amount of general solid waste processed at Killingworth's Solid Waste Disposal and Recycling Center (Transfer Station). At the same time, the amount of recycled paper products rose 24%. Both numbers are year-to-year comparisons and follow similar improvements during the January to March quarter. Thanks to town residents' cooperation on these efforts, Killingworth was able to hold down processing fees, which come out of town taxes.

Formed by the town's Board of Selectmen to make recommendations to the Board, the PAYT Committee plans to make final recommendations this fall on ways to further enhance the town's waste operations. Input from town residents is an important part of the process. Following the overwhelming response to the first survey, the committee is asking Killingworth residents to participate in a second survey about Transfer Station practices. Please respond by October 13. Thank you!

Annino Proposes to Stripe All Town Roads
At the Board of Selectmen's meeting last night, Selectman Louis Annino, Sr. said he has received many phone calls from residents supporting the center line road-striping and proposed that the town move forward and stripe all the roads. It was not clear if Annino was proposing a stripe on all town roads or on just the town footprint roads originally passed by a 2-1 vote by the Board of Selectmen back in April. The motion was subsequently withdrawn and put on the agenda for the Oct. 12 Selectmen's meeting when First Selectman David Denvir questioned whether there was money in the budget to move forward, and it was noted that the item was not on the night's agenda. The money for the first round of road striping came from funds in last year's budget. Over the last several months, Annino has refused to consider the petitions presented from residents opposed to the striping because he said it was a public safety issue and should not be open to a public vote. At the previous Selectmen's meeting, newly installed selectman Fred Dudek agreed.

Crescent
by Diana Abu-Jaber
ISBN: 039305747x

Sirine is an excellent chef, living in Los Angeles with her uncle, who has raised her since she was just a young girl. Years ago her American mother and Iranian father were killed while providing humanitarian aid in Africa. Now nearly forty and still single, Sirine enjoys her quiet life with her uncle. She loves her job as chef in Nadia's Café, a small restaurant near campus that caters to Middle Eastern students and faculty.

Sirine befriends a young photographer who has the uncanny and sometimes disturbing habit of taking a photograph when the subject is completely unaware. She also becomes very close with an Iranian visiting professor whose sometimes curious actions raise questions regarding why he left Iran, what he was leaving behind, and why it was dangerous for him to return.

The descriptions of food and cooking in Crescent make the reader long for a seat at a table in Nadia's Café in order to partake of the delicious food and the warm company. Diana Abu-Jaber is a masterful storyteller, alternating the story of the characters working in and frequenting Nadia's Café with an ongoing Iranian fable told by her uncle. The two stories coincide near the end of the book in a way that is both surprising and delightful.

Diana Abu-Jaber's first novel was Arabian Jazz, winner of the Oregon Book Award and finalist for the National PEN/Hemingway Award.
