The Book That Changed My Life:
Interviews with National Book Award
Winners and Finalists

by Diane Osen
ISBN: 0679783512

The idea for this book began as a conversation between Diane Osen, a freelance writer and editor, and Neil Baldwin, executive director of the National Book Foundation. Osen has a passion for books and reading, and believes "Stories are essential to our very nature as human beings." She has had much contact with contemporary authors, and it was her desire to be able to share "the same thrill of immediacy" she experiences when talking with an author.

The Book That Changed My Life features interviews with fifteen contemporary authors, including Charles Johnson, for whom Herman Melville and Richard Wright were formative; Barry Lopez, who read Rachel Carson and Peter Matthiessen; and Grace Paley, who was influenced by Isaac Babel and Virginia Woolf. Prior to each interview, Diane Osen read everything she could find about and by the author. She carefully prepared her questions in advance, but then was flexible to go where the conversation led. One consistent question for each author, asked in various ways, focused on the books the author had read in childhood.

This fascinating collection of interviews will give the reader insight into what books and events helped bring many of these award-winning authors to writing. At the end of each interview is a list of the author's works, as well as all of the books mentioned by the author that made a strong impact on his or her life.
