Selectmen Vote to Stripe Remaining Footprint Roads
The Killingworth Board of Selectmen passed the motion to stripe the remaining town signature roads, last night in a 2-1 vote. The funding will come from an existing highway department line item used for road resurfacing. Selectman Louis Annino, Sr., proposed the motion and Selectman Fred Dudek voted in favor, after determining exactly which line in the town budget would be used for the purpose. Dudek preferred the money not come out of the general fund that is normally used to cover overruns in the snow plowing budget. The money for the first round of striping came from a surplus in last year's budget. The 2004-2005 budget was passed without any funding in the road striping line. The vote passed despite First Selectman David Denvir's objections. He said that the Board implied there would be some investigation into the choice of roads to be striped, and he objected that money was being moved from one budget item to fund another. In previous meetings, Annino and Dudek have voted against bringing the issue to a Town Meeting, despite several petitions from residents, because they said it was a public safety issue that should be decided by the Board and not a public vote. Highway foreman Jim Ward will determine when the roads can be striped, but Dudek said he thought it might have to wait until spring because of road temperatures.

36 Views of Mount Fuji:
On Finding Myself in Japan
by Cathy N. Davidson
ASIN: 0452272408

Cathy Davidson, an English professor at Michigan State University, dreams of living in Japan. She applies and is accepted into an academic faculty exchange program, where she will teach at the Kansai Women's University while someone from KWU teaches her classes at Michigan State University. 36 Views of Mount Fuji is Davidson's account of the four trips she made to Japan as a teacher of the English language to Japanese students.

For anyone interested in either living in or visiting Japan, Davidson's sensitive descriptions of becoming familiar with Japanese culture will be a delightful read. She learns through her students, and is also befriended by other teachers at KWU who help Davidson feel more comfortable in a setting that is truly foreign to her.

Throughout the course of her four trips to Japan, Davidson finds herself on several intriguing quests. One goal is to become adept with the language and customs of Japan. Another is to work through the death of her mother. A third quest, seeing Mount Fuji, proves to be the most elusive of all. She does not see the mountain until her fourth trip to Japan. For that reason the book's title is based on Katushika Hokusai's work, Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, a series of illustrations of the famous mountain from thirty-six different vantage points. Davidson's book will help the reader see Japan from at least as many points of view.

Susan Miller is the Associate Director of the Arnold Bernhard Library at Quinnipiac University. She holds a Bachelor and Master of Music from Ohio State University and a M.S. in Library Science from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Contact Susan at covertocover@killingworthtoday.com
