Saturday, December 11, 2004Global Values Fall Production - 'Trials and Tribble-Ations'The KES Global Values Drama Club presented its production of 'Trials and Tribble-Ations' on Thursday evening and Friday afternoon at the KES auditorium. The book and lyrics were written by Global Values Director Andrea Wilson with original music by KES Musical Director Joel Spineti. The three-scene play takes place in the fictional town of Monstropolis where being mean is normal and being nice is grounds for prosecution.
The 22 KES third and fourth-graders have spent the last few months learning the songs and their lines as well as learning about kindness and acceptance. The Drama Club is part of a school-wide plan to teach children about the important things in life like cooperation and forgiveness. Each year the school plans several activities that help reinforce these concepts. The cast of 'Trials' included: Sarah Bauer, Shane Kenney, Nathan Acker, Sean Frederick, Stephanie Nixon, Kiely Anderson, Jared Macfarlane, Alia Barefoot, Grace Colonia-Hughs, Alex Benevelli, Abby Luther, Elyce Couture, Florre Stoop, Campbell Disbron, Felicia Edwards, Samantha Benevelli, Emma Thomas, Rachel Artus, Bryce Colonia-Hughs, Annie Alfiero, Erin Hutchinson and Phoenix Campagnuolo. ![]() KRTC Member Retires from Public Service Chairman of the Killingworth Republican Town Committee, John Amport, issued a press release regarding the retirement of long-time member Marliyn Breister.

In late November the site celebrated its one year anniversary. With over 1.4 million hits in the last six months, the site was due for some tuning. I hope the changes will keep the site up and running for years to come and I look forward to its continued growth and tailoring to the town's information needs.
The most notable change is that the site will now be accepting advertising. I have kept the bells and flashing to a minimum for sanity's sake and look forward to bumping the current advertising down to accommodate local businesses and events. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. There are a few additions to site, so please poke around and make suggestions. For those who hated the "TOP" jump that allowed you to click back to the top of the page; it's gone. For those who used this feature... you may now click on the far right column to 'jump' to the top. The search feature has been changed to Google and I have placed the archives on a separate page accessible from the navigation bar. Though this site has been tested in older browsers, I encourage anyone still viewing the internet through Netscape 4.7 to download the free upgrades and see what you have been missing. See you around town, please feel free to send comments or suggestions to editor@killingworthtoday.com This week, Killingworth Democratic Town Committee Member, Kathleen Amoia writes a wonderful profile on Killingworth's first, and only, First Selectwoman. Amoia writes, "'Getting married was the start,' Pam Ahearn explains as she begins the tale of her odyssey from London hairdresser to Killingworth's First Selectwoman, a post she held from 1985 through '89." Read her complete remarks here.Westbrook Edges Girls HKTB The Haddam-Killingworth Travel Basketball Girls team succumbed in the final minutes to a tough Westbrook team, 30-25, at KES Sunday. In light of First Selectman Denvir's recent admission that he doesn't "know where we go from here" following the defeat of the Nov. 20 Bosco referendum the committee is taking this initiative in the hope that it will lead to realistic and fair deliberations over this large tract of land. The committee expressed a sense of urgency in calling on the Board of Selectmen and the Venuti family to engage in productive dialogue in conjunction with the Board of Finance, Land Use Committee and other stakeholders as soon as possible. KDTC members noted that the property is suited for a variety of uses including badly needed playing fields and other recreational, educational and municipal facilities. It may also facilitate additional open space acquisition.

Sunday, December 05, 2004![]() Educating Alice
by Alice Steinbach ISBN: 0375504419 Alice Steinbach, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and columnist for the Baltimore Sun, takes a leave from her work with the newspaper "to combine three of her greatest passions: learning, traveling, and writing." Educating Alice is a showcase for Steinbach's wit, sensitivity, and love of exploration. Her insightful and articulate writing provides a view into activities the reader would not normally have the opportunity to experience. Steinbach takes us to Paris to study culinary arts with Chef Moreau at the Hotel Ritz, to Kyoto to learn the art of Wakayagi style dance, and to Havana to experience the art and music of native Cubans. In the chapter "The Unreliable Narrator", she attends a writing workshop in Prague, which includes a fine example of Steinbach's reporting ability as she brings to life the story of a young Jewish girl in 1939. The subtitle of Educating Alice is "Adventures of a Curious Woman". It is Steinbach's curiosity that sparks her unique angle on her stories, and makes them a delight to read. She has previously published Without Reservations which chronicles a trip to various cities in Europe. Susan Miller is the Associate Director of the Arnold Bernhard Library at Quinnipiac University. She holds a Bachelor and Master of Music from Ohio State University and a M.S. in Library Science from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Contact Susan at covertocover@killingworthtoday.com Santa Visits the Library Despite the busy time of the year, Santa and Mrs. Claus were able to find time to visit the library yesterday.
