This week, First Selectman David Denvir reflects on the past year and offers his wishes for a Happy New Year. Read his complete remarks here. Friday, December 31, 2004EDITORIAL: Count Your Blessings; Think About GivingAs 2004 comes to a close, we should all count our blessings that, although our lives may not be perfect, for the most part we have clean water, food, clothing, shelter, and most of all hope for a bright New Year. We all know that not everyone has been as lucky this year: Grocery stores filled with food, gasoline available at the pumps, quality public education, freedom to worship, free and peaceful elections and a volunteer military that protects our rights and borders with honor. Please take stock of what you have and think about giving this last day of the year to the charity of your choice. If you are unable to give, please take a moment to look around at what we have, and enter the New Year with a renewed sense of community, compassion and respect.
The deadly tsunami that struck southern Asia has claimed over 130,000 lives and left millions without food, water, shelter and medicine. ReliefWeb: a project of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) CNN: List of Aid groups The American Red Cross: Cougars Go 4-0 into New Year The Haddam-Killingworth Boys Basketball Team remained unbeaten this season with an 80-45 trouncing of Portland last night. He worked as a diesel truck mechanic and owner or J.C. Greasing and Repairs, was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Milford. Wednesday, December 29, 2004PAYT Committee Releases ReportThe Pay As You Throw Committee has released its final report to the Board of Selectmen with its recommendations for the current and future operations of the transfer station. PAYT Chairman Steve Hollander states in his press release:
In an attempt to keep Killingworth's Solid Waste Disposal and Recycling Center (Transfer Station) operations generally fee-free and to extend the life of the existing facility, a Killingworth committee is urging Selectmen to take a series of immediate steps. The Transfer Station will be closed on Saturday, Jan. 1, New Year's Day. Regular hours are in effect Tuesday (3-7pm) and Thursday (2-7pm), Dec. 28 and 30. Selectmen have instructed that the Transfer Station remain open past 7:00 p.m. on those dates if people are still waiting to enter. Because of the large volume of cardboard expected during the holiday period and the need to recycle it, residents are requested to bring cardboard in over coming days not necessarily immediately and all at once. Flat cardboard will also help by accommodating more capacity in the recycle bins.
