After falling from 4th to 16th in the previous ratings in 2003, Killingworth moves back into the top 10 because of higher ratings in education, economy and leisure. The 2003 ratings were made of the 33 towns with populations between 5,000-10,000.Some of the factors considered in the ratings are library funding, SAT scores, voter turnout and median house price. The leisure category relies heavily on local support for the public library. Killingworth is listed at $39.91 library per capita, compared to $38.45 for top-town Sherman with a population of 3,827 and $96.21 for No. 3 rated town Salisbury with a population of 3,977. Bethany, ranked second overall, with a population similar to ours at 5,040, spent just $16.41 library per capita. SAT scores for all the top 10 towns ranged between 1000 and 1100 with Killingworth's average calculated at 1076. The voter turnout was also similar with all 10 towns listed at 80+ percent turnout for the November 2004 presidential election. Among the top 10 towns, Sherman had the highest median house price at $405,000; No. 6 Harwinton had the lowest at $194,000, and Killingworth was listed at $319,000. According to the article, the strength of the local economy was determined by the 2004 Public Investment Community score, compiled by the Office of Policy and Management, which rates all Connecticut towns under a formula based on population, per capita income, the adjusted equalized grand list per capita, the unemployment rate, the equalized mill rate and per capita aid to children. Killingworth ranked fifth strongest overall for this category. Neighboring Haddam, that shares our regional school district, jumped from 25th in 2003 to 12th in the 2005 ratings of the 22 towns with populations between 6,500-10,000. It made significant improvements in its ratings of crime, economy, and leisure with its highest overall being its 10th place rank in the education category. Editor's Note: Nancy Bradley, the President of the Killingworth Library Association, Inc. has asked to clarify the information on library funding. The Town of Killingworth contributes (FYE 6/30/05) $156,000 or approximately $26. per capita to the Library. The Board of Directors is responsible for raising the balance, around $85,000. The total budget this year is $239,647.00. Bradley has provided the 2005-2006 proposed budget recently submitted to the Board of Selectmen. The book is a result of Jones' travels through France, Italy, Greece, Egypt, and Turkey while apprenticing with the architect Lewis Vulliamy. The Grammar of Ornament is a visual feast of pattern and color. It includes reproductions of more than 2,350 color engravings of ornamental styles. The illustrations are grouped by geographic location (Indian, Persian, Greek); or time period (Medieval, Renaissance); or by special type, such as leaves and flowers from nature. While the reader may not read this book from cover to cover, it is a fascinating look at the key design elements reflective of particular genres.
