Saturday, April 16, 2005Democrats Discuss November ElectionsAt a recent Killingworth Democratic Town Committee meeting, members discussed the party's prospects for the fall elections. HK Takes Down Westbrook The HK Softball and Baseball teams combined for 33 runs yesterday and both improved to 5-0 on the year with yesterday's wins over Westbrook. The HK Softball team had 23 runs on 22 hits behind another stellar performance on the mound by Chelsea Griswold. Jenna Webber had 5 RBIs, Kyle Emshwiller had 4 and Griswold helped her own cause with 3. The Cougar Baseball team had a 10-3 victory over the White Knights. Tyler Riordan got the win with RBIs from Peter Rynkowski (3), Doug Bradley(2), Devin Bell(2) and Brian Foley (2). KES Beautification Day The Killingworth Elementary School looks ready for spring after the KES-PTO sponsored Beautification Day yesterday. This year each class was assigned an area and during the school day and parents, and volunteers helped the students rake, mulch and plant donated flowers and seeds.
![]() Friday, April 15, 2005Board of Education Sends Budget to ReferendumThe Reg. 17 Board of Education unanimously passed a $30.3 million budget Thursday night, reflecting a 7.6 percent increase over last year's spending. ![]() Lately, there has been some discussion in the local media regarding whether or not the District 17 Board of Education's expulsion policy for possession of drugs or alcohol on school property or at school events (away sporting events, field trips, etc.) is too harsh. The Board also met with concerned students, parents and others from the community on March 3, 2005, to listen to some of their concerns on both sides of the issue. Read more. Sports Update: HK Softball Improves to 4-0 The HK Softball team defeated Valley Regional, 11-1, Wednesday to remain undefeated so far this season. Chelsea Griswold gave up only 4 hits to keep her perfect and Kyle Emshwiller had a home run.HK Lacrosse improved its record to 2-1 with Thursday's ,13-12, overtime win over Old Saybrook. Ashley Smith led the scoring with 4 goals and 4 ground ball controls; Jess Bellonio had 3 goals; Shannon Kenney had 3 goals; Ali Thomson had 2 goals, 2 caused turnovers and 3 draw controls, and Jess Fox had 1 goal and 6 caused turnovers. In goal for the Cougars was Alicia Bobbie with 9 saves. HK's Alex Langevin & John Ahearn, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.HK Lacrosse Gets First Win HK Girls Lacrosse scored two consecutive goals late in second half to secure its first victory of the season in a 12-10 win over West Haven, Monday. The Cougars led 6-3 at the half then opened up a 10-6 lead after the break. West Haven made a late run and tied the score at 10 with six minutes to go. According to Coach Lindsey Matteo, "the critical draw control made by Ali Thomson started the HK offense up again". "We played a great game, our offensive game up big today. They took smart shots on goal and it shows! Our midfield worked hard maintaining possession and coming up big on draw controls and ground balls. We played a strong game." Cougar scoring came from: Jess Bellonio, 4 goals, Ali Thomson, 3 goals, Kaeli Deane, 2 goals, Ashley Smith, 2 goals, and Jessica Fox, 1 goal. Defensively, senior goalie, Alicia Bobbie had 9 saves for the night, and Jessica Fox and Amanda Murray combined for four ground ball controls and caused four turnovers. HK plays again Thursday vs. Old Saybrook at home at 4:00 p.m. ![]() Wednesday, April 13, 2005KES Plans Beautification DayIn celebration of Earth Day, the Killingworth Elementary School Parent Teachers Organization (KES-PTO) is sponsoring a Spring Beautification Day on Friday, April 15 starting at 8:30 a.m.(April 29 is the rain date).
Parents, students, teachers and administrators will work side by side cleaning up and beautifying school grounds. Each class with be given an one hour time slot and section of the school grounds in which to plant, prune, weed, rake or spread mulch. Parent participants are being asked to bring their pruners, wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels, pitch forks, hedge clippers and green thumbs. Any amount of time given to this project will be greatly appreciated. Reg. 17 Public Hearing on Budget The Reg. 17 School District Board of Education will hold its public budget hearing on Thursday, April 14 at 7:00 p.m. at Burr Elementary School. This is the final opportunity for the public to give its input to the Board of Education prior to the May 2 Annual Meeting and the May 3 School Budget Referendum. Following Thursday's meeting the Board will approval the legal call for the May 2 Annual Meeting. This meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the HK Auditorium. The voting on the referendum will take place the next day at Killingworth Elementary School.
The $30,432,820 proposed budget represents a 7.98 percent increase over last year's budget for a total increase of $2,249,375. Superintendent Gary Mala stated that 94 percent of the budget proposal is controlled by fixed costs in the areas of contractual obligations, such as salaries and benefits; transportation costs; special education and tuition; facility costs, and the cost of securing the third bond for construction of the new Intermediate/Middle School. The budget includes $54,739 in increases to Learning programs; $1,873,132 increases to salaries, benefits and debt service; $53,000 increase in tuition costs and $251,543 increase in facility costs. The event is a fun-filled day where treasure hunters can pick up big bargains. The money raised will be used to supplement the fire company's annual budget, as well as purchasing additional training and special fire/rescue equipment. This is Schaedler's first production at HKMS. She worked side by side with Musical Director Rebecca Degnan and an outstanding student crew and staff of volunteers to put on Frank Loesser's Academy Award-winning musical. The 49-member cast included Zach Morello as Sky Masterson, Regan Hammell as Sarah Brown, Nick Stanford as Nathan Detroit, Meghan Monroe as Miss Adelaide, Kylee Bell as Nicely-nicely Johnson, Maddy Hammell as Benny Southstreet, Alicia Mala as Rusty Charlie and Jocelyn Lindner as Arlene Abernathy.
