An Update on Mikayla Nuhn
Joan Reed Wilson of the Killingworth Women's Organization has provided a brief update on the condition of Mikayla Nuhn, the three-year old Killingworth child that was diagnosed with a brain stem disorder and recently required spinal fusion surgery. The surgery was performed at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Mikayla's family, Michelle and Todd Nuhn and sister, Alexis have been by her side.

According to Wilson, Mikayla had her surgery on June 9. The surgery lasted for 8 hours and Mikayla was in quite a lot of pain for the few days following. But she bounced back quickly and was released from the hospital on June 14. To keep her spine from moving too much, Mikayla will have to wear a halo, which is a metal brace that extends from above her head to her waist. The Nuhns had to purchase a special car seat that could accommodate the halo and as soon as it arrives, they plan to head back home.

The family and friends of Mikayla would like to extend their deepest thanks and gratitude to those who contributed to Mikayla's fund and sent warm thoughts and prayers.

The Banknorth account is still open. If you would like to donate to Mikayla's Fund, please contact Nadine Cabrera at Banknorth at (860) 663-3894 or stop by the Killingworth Branch to make a deposit to the account "KWO FBO Mikayla Nuhn Fund."

In addition, there will be a fundraising event through Apizza Tuscana (663-2256) on Sunday, June 26 from 5-8 p.m. Pizzas will be delivered by the friends and family of Mikayla. A $5.00 donation will be collected in addition to the price of the pizza. All proceeds will go to the Mikayla Nuhn Fund. If you have questions, please call Lori Porter at (860) 663-3435.

Killingworth Elementary School has a 2-Hour Delayed Opening Due to a Power Outage

Selectmen Reject DEP Funds for Bosco Land
The Board of Selectmen, last night, voted against granting the State Department of Environmental Protection a conservation easement for approximately 80 of the 133 acres of the town-owned Bosco property on Route 81.

At a Town Meeting in May 2002, voters overwhelming rejected the idea of granting the easement in exchange for $180,000 in State grant money. Following the failed referendums on the Killingworth Recreation Complex in 2004, First Selectman David Denvir re-visited the State's offer. On June 6, 2005, the 50 or so residents that attended the Town Meeting sent a mixed message. Denvir reportedly stated that unless he heard an overwhelming reversal the in Town's sentiment, he would not recommend overturning the 2002 decision.

Following the discussion at last night's Board of Selectmen's meeting, Selectman Fred Dudek and Denvir voted against the State's offer in order to maintain the Town's right to use the property as it sees fit. Selectman Louis Annino, Sr. voted in favor of the easement because, he said, the land was originally purchased for open space and was meant to establish a 'Green Belt' from Haddam all the way through Killingworth.

There was discussion from the meeting's visitors regarding the Town's ability to control hunting on the land once it was associated with hunting areas in Cockaponset State Forest; the future needs of the School District, and the chance to recoup part of the Town's investment in the property. In the end, the Selectmen decided to protect the Town's ability to use the property for its future interests.

This week, Killingworth Democratic Town Committee members Arlene Tunney and Gwenne Lally discuss some of the bigger and smaller decisions the Town must make.

It's so easy to get caught up in Killingworth's rural atmosphere and gentle pace that sometimes we overlook our own problems. For example, the exterior condition of the Killingworth Library was neglected for several years by this administration, despite the Town's commitment to maintain it. Now that the situation has been addressed there's a bigger issue. full story.
