![]() ![]() KDTC Mid-Summer BBQ The Killingworth Democratic Town Committee Barbecue and Fundraiser, held at the Klein's on Chestnut Hill Road, was blessed by great weather, even better food, and the soft summer sounds of The Three Aces. The trio providing the music consisted of Addy Hirschhorn on the clarinet, Stephen H. Kaprelian playing the string bass, and Jim Cunningham on the trumpet. There was much talk of the upcoming Democratic Caucus and the Fall election season. The one Republican among the picnickers, Ken Maxwell, said he had come because "You have to learn about both sides of the fence." All in all, there was much discussion about every angle of that fence and the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Sunday, July 17, 2005KYL Softball Falls in Semis The Killingworth Youth League Girls 9-10 All-Stars suffered a tough, 17-9, loss in the semi-final round to No. 1 seed Coginchaug, Friday night. Coginchaug had an early 6-3 lead after 2 innings. It was a great effort for the young KYL team as they knocked out Coginchaug's number one pitcher in the fourth inning taking 9 hits from a pitcher who had given up only 4 runs in the 2 previous tournament games she pitched. Sammy Waskowitz went 2 for 2 with 3 walks and one RBI and Alex Raccio went 2 for 3. In 5 tournament games, the team batting average was .442. Ashley Caruso led the way batting .750; Alex Raccio at .600, followed by Shaina Rowley .563; Nikki Bukovsky .467; Taylor Burger, .455 and Sammy Waskowitz, .438. The team would like to thank their parents and the Killingworth Youth League for their support throughout the season and during the tournament. A special thanks to Diane Flynn, Vice President of KYL for her tireless efforts in support of the girls program. KYL Juniors Eliminated The Killingworth Youth League Juniors (13-14) were eliminated in the championship round to host team Middletown, 3-2, in front of a large, vocal crowd under the lights at Palmer Field. Killingworth played their "best defensive game of the tournament...really flashing the leather" but it was not enough against the relentless Middletown offense in the rematch. The Middletown players and faithful had clearly not forgotten the stunning 9-3 loss to Killingworth in the opening night game. Middletown will now play in the final against undefeated Portland.Killingworth's 13-year-old pitching "ace" Robby Flynn pitched a complete game jewel, allowing only four hits and two earned runs to the formidable Middletown lineup. Flynn clearly "pitched well enough to win". The game was an end-to-end "nail-biter" because the two teams left a combined thirteen men on base. The pressure on both team's defenses to hold runners on base was enormous and both teams were largely successful with great pitching, catching and defensive plays, inning after inning. On offense, Chris Bova manufactured both Killingworth runs with his opportunistic, "head's up baserunning" in the semifinal. Bova, Reed Sturman and Zach Kumnick led the offense in the tournament with .500, .545, .667 batting averages and .667, .583 and .773 on base percentages, respectively. Flynn (5), Sturman (8) and Andrew Callahan (5) led the team in runs batted in. Bova (4), Callahan (5), Matt Johnson (6), Kumnick (8) and Sturman (5) made life miserable for opposing pitchers and catchers by stealing 28-bases in 31-attempt. In addition to Flynn, Killingworth got notable pitching performances in the tournament from Bova, Callahan, Johnson, Billy Jette, Brian Ludington, and Mike Ossa. Defensively, memorable plays were made by center fielder Jette, Callahan (1B), Ludington (C), Ben Uihlein (C), and outfielders Sturman, Alphonse Simeone, Max Amendola and Brad Nuhn. The thirteen young men from Killingworth received many complements from District IX officials, Middletown tournament organizers, umpires and opposing coaches relating to their ability, "class," and "great attitudes." The team represented us commendably against the much larger programs from Portland, Cromwell and Middletown. The tall, opposing pitcher with the fully grown mustache had the Killingworth boys (and frankly some of the coaches) totally freaked out!
