KES Lockdown Update: 4:45 p.m.
According to State Police, Mark S. Petrillo, husband of KES first grade teacher Christine Petrillo, was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with Breach of Peace for allegedly threatening his spouse. He was released on a $2500.00 bond and is scheduled to appear in Middletown Superior Court on Wednesday, Sept. 7. The police report states that, "communication between the complainant and accused led them to believe that there was the potential for violence between the two parties. As a result, the school administration placed the school on lockdown to prevent anyone from entering the school. Petrillo turned himself in at Troop F in Westbrook. At no point was any student or other person placed in any danger." The Petrillo's are Killingworth residents.

Schools Superintendent Gary Mala and State Police Master Sergeant Thomas Heinssen will attend the Monday, Sept. 12, PTO meeting at Killingworth Elementary School to answer any questions or concerns regarding the incident today at the elementary school or about the procedures in place to protect the safety of students and staff. KES Principal Rita Peretto and Asst. Principal Karen Ockasi will also be in attendance. The meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Music Room at KES.

Lockdown Situation Resolved at Elementary School
As reported on local news channels and websites, a situation occurred this morning that necessitated lockdown procedures at Killingworth Elementary School. State Police reported at 1:00 p.m. that a male had been arrested in connection with a domestic dispute with one of the classroom teachers at KES.

According to Karen Ockasi, KES Assistant Principal, a classroom teacher reported for work this morning and informed her that she had been threatened in a domestic dispute matter off of school grounds. Ockasi, in the absence of Principal Rita Peretto who was out ill, took immediate precautions in case the situation carried over into the school. Ockasi contacted the District administration and State Police and the school was placed in lockdown according to the District's Crisis Policy and Procedures.

Schools Superintendent Gary Mala said at no time were students and staff at risk and the school day progressed normally. The lockdown procedure involved securing exterior doors except for the main entrance and having students stay locked in their classrooms with their teacher. State Police were on site almost immediately to secure the building and grounds with the help of the school administration and maintenance staff. Mala said the high school and middle school grounds were also monitored because of the individuals involved.

KES's youngest students were told that indoor recess would be held due to the hot weather and older grades were told it was a drill. Within a short time, it was determined that the male was not on the school grounds, but the lockdown remained in effect until the individual surrendered himself to State Police. The teacher left the school to help resolve the situation at the Troop F Barracks in Westbrook.

The State Police will issue a statement later today and Superintendent Mala will make a determination about further parental notification and the immediate status of the KES classroom. A statement regarding the incident will be sent home with students. Mala said he planned to meet with staff at the end of the day to debrief them on the incident and the school's response. He commented that State Police were impressed with the swift actions taken by the school's administration.

Parents with questions or concerns may contact the school at 663-1121. Check back for updates later today.

Images from the Annual Town Picnic
Killingworth held its Annual Town Picnic Sunday on one of the most beautiful days of the year. Food, Fun and lot of Town talk was the recipe for the day. Here are just a few images from around the scene. For more photos please visit the Picnic 2005 online gallery. Have some great photos you'd like to share? Send them along to the editor@killingworthtoday.com and have some of them included in the gallery. Thanks to Jamie Young for sending in a few shots, including those of the pie eating contest.

This week, Killingworth Democratic Town Committee member Kathleen Amoia offers some background on the Democratic candidate for First Selectman, Marty Klein. She says, "Looking at the whole picture and believing that problems are solvable if you engage the people concerned, enables Marty Klein to bring success to these myriad and diverse activities".

Most of us have heard of Vista (Volunteers in Service to America), the organization that has put over 120,000 Americans in positions of national service since its inception in 1965. We know it as a home- based version of the Peace Corps, created as part of President John F. Kennedy's demand that we ask not what our country could do for us but what we could do for it. Vista's mission was and remains, to place volunteers in community-based agencies that are seeking effective, long term solutions to problems stemming from rural and urban poverty.

HK Grads Honored for Drunken Driving Campaign
The Hartford Courant reported that recent Haddam-Killingworth High School graduates Julianna Goodwin and Amber Gode were one of the winners of the Connecticut Department of Transportation's Drink-Drive-Lose Ad Challenge. The contest asked 14 to 20-year-olds to submit entries using either print, television or Flash communication to urge their peers to refrain from drinking and driving.

Goodwin and Gode created the winning Flash animation piece that can be viewed at the Ad Challenge Web site www.drink-drive-lose.com. The closing message says, "People who didn't drink but died anyway because someone else did. Choose life. Don't Drink and Drive".

The CDT received more than 60 submissions. Prizes included an Xbox computer game; four passes to Six Flags New England Theme Park; and a gift certificate to Bob's Stores. The ad challenge is an extension of an aggressive communications campaign the DOT launched in 2003 and was funded by a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
