State Agency Warns Against New Recycling Plan
After months of trying to get the Town to begin recycling mixed paper, the Pay As You Throw Committee received approval in early August and recently began collections at the Town Transfer Station. Now, according to the Hartford Courant, the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority has issued a warning that any contract with an outside company to receive the mixed paper would violate the Town's contract with the State. The CRRA does not currently recycle mixed paper but has plans to begin accepting materials on October 1.

On August 8, the Board of Selectmen approved moving forward on a contract with Willimantic Waste Paper Company to provide a receptacle at the Town Transfer Station for mixed-paper recycling. The contract also covered hauling the recyclables and a rebate to the Town of $40 per ton. At that time, mixed paper was not being recycled but was disposed of with the rest of the Town's municipal solid waste at the CRRA facility in Essex at a cost to the Town of $70 per ton.

At the August 22 BOS meeting, the Board, aware of the CRRA's concerns, approved using one of the Town's own receptacles for mixed-paper disposal stating that it would decide later who would receive the materials.

On Monday according to reports, the Board of Selectmen decided to send the one box container to Willimantic when it is full and resume sending the material to the CRRA facility when it begins accepting the material for recycling.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Saturday
This Saturday, September 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., The Estuary Region Household Hazardous Waste Facility in Essex will be collecting old electronics as well as household, garage, workshop and yard/garden materials not accepted at the Town Transfer station.

According to PAYT Committee member Amy Perry, there is a need to get these items out of the compactor site and out of bulky waste. With all the new computers purchased for back to school - their will be discards. The disposal is FREE of charge but the Town will be charged for each car that uses the facility, so carpooling is strongly recommended. Save gas and time by joining with your neighbors for the responsible disposal of computers, televisions, microwaves and VCRs. For a complete list of acceptable items and future dates please download the .PDF brochure from the Killingworth Town Services page.

Identification is required: drivers' licenses will be checked.

Directions: Take Route 9 south; exit 4; go straight off exit ramp, cross over railroad tracks, pass the CRRA transfer station, the HHW facility is on the left.

For more information or questions please contact CRERPA at 860-388-3497 or visit the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority website at www.crra.org

Families Helping Families During Times of Need
All over the country, families are pitching in to help our southern state neighbors rebuild their lives and reunite their families. In Killingworth the efforts should not go unnoticed.

The tag sale held on Saturday at Ted and Patty Coletti's house to raise money for relief efforts of Hurricane Katrina was a huge success. According to Ted Coletti, it started as a lemonade sale that his daughter Mary wanted to run. It quickly evolved into a coffee and egg sandwich sale and then into a neighborhood-wide tag sale. Not having many items to sell of their own, the Colettis decided to solicit donations from their Wolf Hollow neighbors and their coworkers at The Lee Company in Essex.

Many people responded eagerly and by Friday night the garage was full of good quality stuff. Son Richard worked the cash register along with neighbors Tyler Montesi and Chris Constantino while Scott Elliott sold his mom's flowers. Mary and her friend, Nadia Rohlfs, sold lemonade too. Everyone's contributions and efforts yielded an amazing $1,018 for The Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund! The Colettis would like to thank everyone who helped and stopped by. "It was a day we'll remember and hopefully it will help to ease someone's suffering."

Important Health Information from Reg. 17
Superintendent of Schools Gary Mala and Registered Nurse Carol Flanagan-Dupuis from the High School, attended the KES-PTO meeting last night to follow up with parents about the four District students who were diagnosed with viral meningitis over the past three days. Over the weekend, two HK High School Football players were diagnosed and admitted to the hospital. Dupuis said they determined that the "common use of a water jug" was the likely carrier. On Monday the District was informed that two Burr Elementary School students were also diagnosed.

In a letter sent home to District students Monday, Dupuis said viral meningitis is one of the most common types of meningitis and is usually seen between the months of June and October. She said the two related students from the elementary school and the two high school students' illnesses were unrelated. Viral meningitis is less severe than bacterial meningitis and the person usually gets better without any specific treatment. It is spread person to person through "respiratory droplets"; sneezing, coughing, or by the fecal-oral route. Frequent and thorough handwashing, especially after diaper changes or using the bathroom is particularly important.

The symptoms of viral meningitis include fever, severe headache, stiff neck, drowsiness or confusion, nausea, and vomiting. Viral meningitis is serious but rarely fatal in healthy persons. Symptoms generally appear within 3-7 days from the time you are infected until you develop symptoms.

If you have any concerns about your child, please call your family physician or Dupuis at 345-8541. The Director of Public Health in Killingworth is Dr. Ed Winokur. He can be reached at 669-8659.

This week, Killingworth Democratic Town Committee member Barbara Klein offers information on a transportation service available to residents. "The 9 Town Transit Services are available to everybody regardless of age or ability. This includes both the Off-Route and Transit-On-Call services."

Did you see the beautiful 9 Town Transit bus at the Killingworth Town Picnic, the bus with the turquoise and blue ripples painted on its side? It's not a bad idea to inquire about how the services offered by the Estuary Transit District (ETD) may meet your needs. You may want to think twice about buying that jalopy for your teenager, or take the bus to visit your mother while your car is being repaired, or keep a doctor's appointment when you are unable to drive. You may even save commuting time and money by using the bus to connect with the Shoreline East.

Volunteers Needed for Mentor Program
The Haddam Killingworth Mentor program will beginning its 11th year in September and what we hope will be a tremendously successful experience for our adult volunteers (Mentors) and their students (Mentees). Last year we expanded the program to include the three elementary schools in the district in addition to the middle and high school sites. We also attracted additional volunteers by providing Mentoring opportunities for students during the after-school programs in the district. When the program was revived in December of 2004 only seven students were being mentored. In the 2004/05 school year we had over 45 volunteers who were matched and met regularly with their students. However, we need an additional 30 volunteers this year to meet student demand.

For further information about the program & future training sessions please contact Ernest Nagler Mentor Project Coordinator at 345-8567 ext 259 or at NaglerE55@RSD17.orgor after work hours at 345-8216.
