Saturday, October 15, 2005Lovers Lane Closed Due to Heavy Rain![]()
Dear Editor:
I'm very pleased that Fred Dudek and I are out in front with answers (in our Republican Notes: "A Vision for Killingworth" ) to the Conservation Commission's questions before they were even asked. 1. What are your thoughts on the need to protect additional land in town for open space?Complete letter Friday, October 14, 2005Cranberry Harvest Is On For Saturday The Killingworth Land Conservation Trust will hold its 3rd Cranberry Harvest tomorrow, Saturday, October 15, from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon at the cranberry bog, off Pond Meadow Road. Postponed from last Saturday, the weather should be improving by tomorrow morning, and the Land Trust hopes to see you there. The cranberries are ripe, and attendees will be allowed to pick and bring home a bag of berries. With the rain we've had this week, the cranberry area will be wet, so wear good boots when you come! In addition to the cranberry area, the Land Trust is managing the bog for rare plants, so come on over and see what the latest is with this unique natural area. (only sustained heavy rains will cancel)Reg. 17 Health Advisory Statement This advisory, concerning a sixth grade student at Haddam Elementary, has been issued to parents and guardians from Region 17 School Officials.
About a month ago you received a letter reporting to you that there were 2 confirmed and 2 unconfirmed cases of viral meningitis in our district. Those students all returned to good health quickly and returned to school. At that time we reassured you that viral meningitis is one of the most common types and is usually seen between June and October. It is generally less severe than bacterial meningitis and the patients usually get better without specific treatment. Yesterday afternoon we received word that a sixth grade student at Haddam Elementary is being treated for viral meningitis, so we would like to reiterate the information sent home last month. Please refer to the information sheet from the CT Department of Public Health. Please be assured that it is safe to send your children to school. Also, please go over with them the importance of frequent hand washing and not sharing drinks, utensils, etc. with others. If they have to sneeze or cough they should do so into their elbow crease, not their hands. If your child is ill, please do not send them to school. If they have a fever, they should be out for 24 hours fever free without the use of fever reducing medicine. If you have concerns about your child please contact your private physician. You may also contact the Department of Public Health at 509-7994 or the town of Haddam Public Health Director, Dr. Arthur Blake at 347-5333. This letter is meant to give you reassuring, accurate information to avoid unnecessary panic or concern. Carol A. Flanagan-Dupuis, RN , School Nurse Supervisor Janice M. Leighton was granted a special form of probation under which the larceny charges he faced will be erased from his record if he successfully completes the two years of probation. Leighton was also ordered to repay the towns $8,000 and perform 200 hours of community service for a nonprofit charity. Read all about this in today's Courant.

The hearings will enable members of the community to share their stories regarding adoption and foster care in the state with the members of the task force. In addition, the task force will use this information to propose legislation regarding adoption proceedings in the state during the upcoming 2006 legislative session.
Dear Editor:
I am writing in support of Richard Cabral, Republican candidate for Treasurer for the Town of Killingworth. I have had the pleasure of knowing Richard for the past three years and know him to be tireless in his commitment to our community. As a member of the Board of Education and many of its subcommittees, Richard devotes countless hours to insure that the educational needs of our children are being met. As a fellow member of the Killingworth Scholarship Association he lends experience and wisdom to a group that seeks to help graduating seniors on their way to college. I have attended many town meetings in recent years where Richard has served as moderator and have always come away impressed with his ability to retain control over these meetings in an unbiased manner. He often brings levity to these meetings which can often be contentious. I know that Richard will devote 150% to the tasks of Town Treasurer. I am confident that with his years of experience as an educator and administrator, as someone who has had fiscal responsibility for large sums of money, as someone who helps shape and control the budget for our school district, Rich Cabral will do an exemplary job managing the treasury of the Town of Killingworth. On November 8, I will be voting for Rich. I hope you will too. Fiona Phelan
Dear Editor:
I am the current Treasurer for the Town of Killingworth and have served in this capacity for four years. It is an important position and is the "checks and balance" watchdog for the town finances. During my terms, I have worked closely with the Board of Finance and Town Auditor. I have made timely deposits, met with governmental banking executives to protect the town assets and made changes in bookkeeping areas. Claudette Lagasse is a Town Treasurer candidate on the November ballot. She will continue the surveillance of the town coffers, attend Board of Finance meetings and keep diligent records. Claudette has previous experience in financial matters, including her present job as an Administrative Assistant for Regional School District #4. Her job responsibilities include staff budget packets, preparing annual salaries, tracking staff assignments as well as completion of state reports. District 4's unique system has five budgets making her familiar with the municipal budget process. Claudette will accept the challenge of Town Treasurer with the serious effort it deserves. Please join me in voting for Claudette Lagasse for Town Treasurer on November 8th. Linda M. Dudek, Town Treasurer Thursday, October 13, 2005Phone Problem Identified with Reg. 17 Central OfficeThe central administration of Regional School District 17 has reported that they have identified a problem with the telephone system providing service to the Central Office of the school district. Due to the excessive rain, it appears as though water in the conduit housing the telephone line is causing major interruptions in service with the telephone number, 860-345-4534. School officials have been in contact with telephone officials to report the problem. At the present time, there is no estimate on how long it will take the telephone company to repair the problem.
In the event individuals need to contact the Central Office, they may try the main number as reported and if they are unsuccessful, they are encouraged to call any school in the district and leave messages that will be forwarded to the appropriate party. Cougar Volleyball Remains at the Top Coach Richard Langer notched win number 401 yesterday evening with the HK Girls Volleyball, 3-0, win over Hale Ray. Game scores were: 25-15, 25-16, 25-16. Stephanie Wiese had 15 kills, Sawyer Kimball had 28 assists and Megan Piscopiello had 16 digs. The Cougars are a perfect 7-0 in conference and 10-0 overall. Wiese hammers the ball past the Hale Ray defenders.![]() ![]() Congratulations From PAYT In just its first six weeks, Killingworth's new mixed paper recycling program received very strong acceptance from town residents. Ten and a half tons of mixed paper was collected at the Transfer Station waste disposal facility during the program's first weeks from late August to early October. That means ten and a half tons of waste has been removed from the Town's mixed solid waste and placed in the new recycling program. In dollars and cents, that means a savings of $1100 for the town as the mixed paper refuse is removed from the mixed solid waste with its higher processing costs and transferred into the mixed paper recycling which costs the Town nothing in processing fees.
Initiated by Killingworth's Pay As You Throw Committee (PAYT) and approved by Town Selectmen, the program is expected to gain even further popularity, greater volume of mixed paper recycling, and added tax dollar savings as more residents participate. PAYT, which is studying and making recommendations for improvements at the Town Transfer Station, conducted a public awareness and education campaign for residents during the first days of the new program. Residents have responded with enthusiasm to the added recycling and its aim to move tons of magazines, catalogs, junk mail, cereal boxes, phone books and the like from general solid waste disposal to recycling. Killingworth's PAYT Committee reminds residents to separate paper products and place them in specially marked collection bins at the Transfer Station. Mixed paper is all kinds of paper products other than newspaper and heavy cardboard, which continue to be recycled as always. PAYT is expressing its thanks to town residents for the quick success of the mixed paper recycling. The committee urges residents to maintain the efforts and reminds everyone of the environmental and financial benefits to Killingworth. PAYT Committee: Steve Hollander -Chairman, Jeff Reisman -Vice Chairman, Amy Roberts-Perry -Secretary, Peter Venuti -Treasurer, John Amport
Dear Editor:
As a resident of Killingworth, I would like to encourage my fellow residents to consider Gwenn Lalley for the Board of Finance. I have had the pleasure of serving on two committees with Ms. Lalley. Each of these committees was assigned responsibilities that would shape Killingworth's future. In both experiences Ms. Lalley demonstrated the, leadership, focus and knowledge that assured a beneficial solution to the tasks of each committee. Complete letter
Dear Editor:
The Killingworth election this November is crucial. Many of us are unhappy with how our town has been administered in the past. If you feel the same, voting this November is your opportunity to bring about much needed change. Marty Klein, the Democratic candidate for 1st Selectman, will bring common sense and a fresh approach to conducting our town's business. My family will be voting the Democrat line in order to bring a total change and we urge you to do the same. Louis C. Annino The writer has been minority member of the Board of Selectmen for over 10 years. Through the CAS Tsunami Relief Effort, students from 325 pre-K-12 schools across Connecticut raised $300,000. With the matching dollars from Brother's Brother, a 1,500 pupil school will be built in Sri Lanka, with additional funding support provided for the next five years. According to the Brother's Brother Foundation, CAS Assistant Executive Director Dr. Robert Carroll, who coordinated the relief effort for CAS, visited Sri Lanka in May, 2005 to break ground for the new school and to meet with education officials there. The "Celebration of Thanks" event was organized to recognize the students of Connecticut, whose selfless efforts in the wake of the devastating tsunami resulted in an historic act of charity. More than 2,500 students, educators and dignitaries were in attendance. The students are now raising funds to help those affected by Hurricane Katrina. It is not a secret that I am a Republican. Prior to proudly becoming a US Citizen, my voting record had not gone beyond the Iron Maiden herself, Margaret Thatcher, and I remain true to Republican beliefs. However, on a local level, I believe one must endorse the person before the party, and that is why I am pleased to support Ed Sipples and his campaign for the Killingworth Board of Selectmen. Complete letter. Consumer Safety Warning from the Fire Company The Fire Company would like to alert residents to a potentially dangerous product that may have been purchased for Halloween celebrations.
The cause of a recent fire in a Vermont family's home was a Halloween decoration, a yellow seven-inch-high bucket with a Halloween face carved into it with eight tea lite candles inside, purchased at Price Chopper. The directions were not clear, according to the report, about how many candles should be burned at one time. The raging fire, that resulted when all eight candles were lit, caused approximately $2,000 worth of damage. The fire led to the removal of the Price Chopper Halloween decorations from all of the Schenectady, N.Y.-based supermarket chain's stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont. According to the report, anyone who bought the decoration can return it to receive a full refund. ![]()
