Dear Editor:
My name is John Speicher, I am a 23-year member of Killingworth's Planning and Zoning Commission. I recently resigned that position due to relocation, and wish to point out that our chairman, Charlie Martens, is not running for re-election, either. With Charlie and I leaving at the same time, a significant block of experience leaves too. I believe it is vitally important for Killingworth to keep as many experienced members on the board as possible. Jim O'Brien is a four-year member of the Commission and a graduate of UCONN with a degree in civil engineering. He is a professional engineer, a licensed surveyor, the chair of Killingworth's Housing Partnership, former scout leader and past vice-president of the Killingworth Lions Club. Most important is the engineering background Jim O'Brien brings to the Commission. His experience, insight and knowledge have been most helpful to the Commission these last four years, and I urge all Killingworth voters to keep Jim O'Brien on board for another four years of service to Killingworth by reelecting him to the Planning and Zoning Commission. John R. Speicher Killingworth Friday, October 21, 2005Selectman Candidates Square Off at ForumA small group gathered at the Congregational Church last night to hear the selectman candidates' views on Town issues. Republican candidate Fred Dudek and Democrats Steve Hollander and Ed Sipples agree that the similarities in the party platforms make this a race about who will act in the best interest of Killingworth.
Regarding their positions about acquiring open space, all three agree that preserving open space is vital to the Town's future. Dudek proposes, as an alternative to purchasing large parcels outright, encouraging property owners to sell the Town the development rights as a way of protecting from over-development. Sipples proposes the use of bonding to purchase open space and build needed ball fields. Hollander says he supports tax breaks and incentives for landowners to maintain their property as open space in a contract with the Town, or will look into state programs to help offset the purchase cost. The candidates were asked their views on changing the Town management structure through charter revision; specifically changing to a five-member Board for Selectmen, the hiring of a Town Manager and a four-year term for the First Selectman. Sipples says he would support the hiring of a Town Manager who would be "above politics" and provide consistency to Town management. He says the First Selectman's position should remain a two-year term and that the salary should be reduced to help pay for the Town Manager. Dudek says he would support the change to a five-member Board of Selectmen and the hiring of a Town Manager with specialized skills and financial training, but would keep the First Selectman's term at two years. Hollander says he would support the hiring of a Town Manager but emphasized that the elected Board of Selectmen should maintain control. Each candidate offered extensive background information in their opening statements and may be contacted directly or through their political committees for further comments and questions. The forum will be re-broadcast on HKTV Channel 18, today in the 7:00 p.m. time slot and Saturday and Sunday in 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. time slots. Dear Editor:
I have been a resident of Killingworth for thirty five years and have witnessed its rapid growth and the changes to our community that accompany that growth. Now more than ever, we need commissioners with solid experience in town planning, zoning, and engineering issues to help guide our town's future development and maintain its beautiful character. David Gross is a registered Professional Engineer who has appeared before Planning & Zoning commissions throughout the state for the past 35 years. His experience with planning & zoning issues along with his career in civil engineering make him an ideal choice and an asset for our Planning & Zoning Commission. David is a 21 year resident of Killingworth, and has served the town in the past as Chairman of both the elementary school building committee and the Board of Education. He has two children that went through the RSD #17 school system, is a member of the Congregational Church, and resides on Skyline Drive. Dear Editor:
John and Meredith Amport moved to Killingworth in May of 2000 where they reside with their family on River Road. Having lived in the area for many years John is very familiar with the Town Meeting, Board of Finance, Board of Selectmen form of government. John has been active in our town from the very beginning. He was elected to the Board of Finance and is also serving on it's Finance Administration Subcommittee. The PAYT Committee was established in 2003 and within a year John was appointed to serve on that committee where changes in the organization of the compactor site has helped to save the Town thousands of dollars. John currently is serving on the Charter Revision Commission where the main focus is to examine features of the current charter and make recommendations for proposed changes. John has already proved to be an asset to Killingworth and places great concern over the fiscal running of the town. Killingworth needs a First Selectman who has been involved in town government and cares where our tax dollars are spent. Please join me in voting for John Amport on November 8th. Susan S. Adinolfo Town Clerk
Dear Editor:
I am writing this letter in support of Claudette Lagasse for town treasurer. I have known Claudette for over thirty years. Some of that time she worked in the office of Killingworth Elementary School where I teach. She is a hard worker who can handle many tasks at one time. She has always met her obligations to the job by going above and beyond regular working hours when it was necessary. Additionally, she is scrupulously honest, and I have no doubt that she will be diligent in accounting for every expenditure and paying bills in a timely manner. For these important reasons, I ask that you consider her bid for treasurer favorably. The opinions expressed in this letter are my personal thoughts, and not necessarily those of the school community for which I work. Nevertheless, a vote for Claudette Lagasse will be a vote for well-managed accounting of the town's money. Trin Walton Killingworth KES Parents and Kids Have a 'Knight' of Fun The KES-PTO held its Fall Book Fair on Tuesday evening in conjunction with the year's first Family Night. The theme of the evening was Medieval Times. Children made edible castles, played games, and enjoyed arts and crafts in between shopping for books and visiting with classmates and friends. Parents gathered in abundance to ponder their children's wish lists for books and have 'family fun' night out. The Book Fair is held twice a year, in the Fall and Spring. PTO Family Nights encourage families to spend quality time with each other and the school community. Look for notices in your child's backpack and in the PTO newsletter for the next date.

Dear Editor:
Perseverance, Determination, and Honesty: three words that become very powerful when joined together. These three words describe John Amport to me. I served with John for two years on the Board of Finance. During that time, I discovered who John is, and what John Amport stands for. Further personal discussions have reinforced these findings. John Amport is a four-year Navy veteran. He served our state and country proudly during the unpopular Vietnam War era. In my mind, being a veteran of the military service says a great deal about a man or woman and his or her dedication to people. It shows caring and compassion towards the people with whom we live. It shows sacrifice of one's self to others. These traits can still be seen today in John Amport. He cares about Killingworth, and he cares about the people of Killingworth. John chaired the Board of Finance Senior Tax Relief subcommittee, and as a member of the subcommittee, I saw his concern for people first-hand. John cares about controlling our rising taxes and maintaining fiscal responsibility. He chaired the Finance Administration subcommittee, and I saw his dedication to solving problems and streamlining processes. John will not fail to objectively represent the interests of all the people of Killingworth. Perseverance, Determination, Honesty. That is what it will take. That is what John Amport is all about. That's why I support John Amport for First Selectman. Fred Dudek Killingworth Dudek currently serves as a selectman.
Dear Editor:
Ed Sipples is one of three non-first selectman candidates that are running for the Killingworth Board of Selectmen. You can vote for 2 of the 3 candidates. Ed Sipples has been involved in Killingworth town government for more than two decades. His love of Killingworth is evidenced by his serving 20 years as a Lion and volunteering for coaching, refereeing and umpiring children sports activities for 16 years. He has further served the town in the roles of Park & Rec. Chairperson, H-K Rec. Authority Chairperson, KDTC Chairperson, Town Picnic Committee member, Zoning Board of Appeals member, Field Study Committee member, and Board of Finance member. That's a lot of giving something back to our town. Complete letter.
Dear Editor:
I have had the privilege to serve as the Town Treasurer for the past four years. Elected to this position, I prepared monthly reports and attended the Board of Finance meetings. The Board of Finance is responsible for the towns' fiscal controls. During the budget process, they meet often and carefully prepare an annual budget that dictates how and where our tax dollars are spent. My role as Treasurer has allowed me to work closely with the individuals on this Board. I would like to encourage voters to Re-Elect Hilary Kumnick and Virginia Wohlstrom to continue to serve on the Board of Finance. Hilary has served on the Board for four years and Virginia was a member for eight years and recently returned to fill a vacancy. They take their positions seriously, are prepared for meetings, and ask pertinent questions. Continuity in this Board is critical. Please join me in voting for Hilary and Virginia on November 8th. Although I have had a casual relationship with Marty Klein for many years I cannot say that I really knew anything about him until the last two years. Prior to that I had been a customer at his golf range and had engaged in neighborly conversation about our town. As I became more concerned about some of Killingworth's growing problems, I got to know Marty better. I have found him to be quite the opposite of what someone's first impression of him might be. Complete letter. This week, Killingworth Democratic Town Committee member Ray Celmer offers his views on the opposition. The upcoming election is approaching rapidly and campaigning has begun in earnest on both sides. Dear Editor:
This November, we residents of Killingworth have the opportunity to choose individuals who can enhance the administration of our town government. One person I know who would contribute greatly is Claudette Lagasse in the role of Town Treasurer. Her everyday job as administrative assistant to the Superintendent of Regional School District 4 has given her vast experience in fiscal and budgetary matters, juggling 5 separate school budget packages. There is no question about her professional qualifications. But more than performance capabilities, Claudette has always had the interests of Killingworth not only in her heart but also in her actions. Her years of involvement in church, social, school and Historical Society activities attest to that. Having served with Claudette in the past on various church committees, I can attest to her diligence and commitment. For all the reasons, and more, I urge you to vote for Claudette Lagasse for Town Treasurer. Peter J. Lenart Killingworth, CT Mother Nature Washes Out Cranberry Harvest On Saturday morning, the Killingworth Land Conservation Trust tried once again to hold its 3rd Cranberry Harvest, having postponed the event from a week earlier due to rain. And while the rain had finally begun to taper off and skies were trying to clear, Mother Nature was again the ultimate victor. Arriving to set up a table and tent as a greeting area, land trust Board members found a bog flooded in the last 24 hours with over a foot of water, covering the cranberries to be harvested by land trust members and Town residents. As such, there was no practical way to hold the harvest, but that did not stop several intrepid cranberry enthusiasts. Adapting to the conditions, a small handful of people held an abbreviated, but spirited nonetheless, "wet harvest," similar to the larger cranberry farms do in Cape Cod. Rather than pick berries from the vine, a wet harvest requires a flooded field, whereby cranberries can be floated atop the water. Discussions have already begun for an elaborate 2006 Harvest Celebration, featuring canoe races, scuba diving and large dogs happily running amok. For anyone interested in learning more about the bog, the cranberries, and management of the area to ensure the continued health of this unique natural area, please contact the Land Trust President John Himmelman, or its Bog Committee Chair, David Gumbart. photos courtesy J.
