Yellow Lines Everywhere
First Selectman Marty Klein instructed Highway Foreman Jim Ward to have the single yellow line painted on the complete list of Town 'footprint' roads this week. By Friday afternoon, Ward said the job was completed.

Klein said he was following through on a decision made in the prior administration and that he agreed that the roads should be lined for safety reasons. He said he has received some negative feedback, but explained that Killingworth is changing, there are a lot more cars on the road, and that people are going faster and being less cautious.

Ward drew up the original list of footprint roads at the Selectmen's request last year. He said the 24 miles of road include all through roads and connecting roads, but not dead ends or subdivisions. Klein said the entire job cost approximately $6800.

In April 2004, the Board of Selectman voted to have the lines painted. The project was delayed when residents began voicing opposition. In June 2004, approximately 60 Roast Meat Hill Road residents petitioned the Town to have the issue decided in a Town Meeting. The Board of Selectmen voted against it and the first round of nine roads were striped. The same nine roads were re-striped earlier last month and Tuesday, Klein authorized Ward to completed the job.

Klein Proposes Permanent Closure of Lover's Lane
At his first official Board of Selectmen's meeting last night, First Selectman Marty Klein proposed permanently closing Lover's Lane. Klein said the egress from the Town road onto Routes 81 and 148 is a serious safety concern. He also said he didn't want to spend any more money on the popular, yet beleaguered cut through. Selectman Fred Dudek and former Selectman Louis Annino were quick to comment that they thought it would require a Town Meeting to permanently close the road.

Dudek said the road is closed six months out of the year anyway; it should be open the other six. He was not concerned however that response time for safety vehicles would be significantly changed if they could not use the road. He said it would add only 90 seconds to a normal response.

Annino said that a simple traffic accident on Route 81 near the new Intermediate/Middle School could cause a huge back up if vehicles could not use Lover's Lane.

Built on a peat bog, the road has been sinking several inches each year for decades. The Town closes the road during heavy rains and in the winter when the road is impassable because of ice.

The previous Board agreed in December 2004 to ask the Inland Wetlands Commission for approval to install pipes across the road to increase the flow of water. The IWWC required the installation of monitoring wells on the downstream side, to determine if changes in water flow might damage the wetland habitat. The wells were installed and have been monitored regularly by Town workers. The project has not recently been on the BOS agenda and no motion was brought at last night's meeting.

The fair will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Shoppers will be delighted in the selection of hand made gifts, ornaments, baked goods and jams. Numerous gift baskets have been created, including theme baskets in many sizes. Fresh Killingworth greens will be available in wreaths, centerpieces and holiday decorations.

"A Photographic History of Killingworth" by Thomas Lentz will be for sale. The book is filled with interesting information about the town and photographs from the Historical Society's collection are featured. The cost of the book is $30.00 and makes a wonderful gift.

The sale will also feature the 2005 Historic Women of Killingworth Doll Ornament. This year the doll is "Goody Wee". According to local folklore, witches and ghosts lurked in our area. Legend has it that Goody Wee was one of them. She and her daughter Betty Wee supposedly traveled through Killingworth and were chosen to be blamed for cream not being worked into butter and carts losing there loads of wood. Historical society member and local artist, Sandra Smith designed the doll. The price of the doll is $25.00 and supplies are limited. Please call S. Smith at 860-663-1583 to place an order.
