Friday, April 28, 2006Ghost Busters!Has anyone seen a ghost? Resident John Himmelman thought we all might enjoy a little springtime mystery. He submitted a photo taken at the Union Cemetery last week that included a small addition. While there are headstones dating back to the Revolutionary War in the small cemetery on Roast Meat Hill Road, the 'ghost' was compliments of Mr. Himmelman and his photo editing program. Below you can see the full photo and to the left, the image that had everyone talking.
![]() Thursday, April 27, 2006Done Deal: Town Closes on the Wettish PropertyThe lawyers and principal parties gathered at the Town Offices yesterday morning to close on the Town's purchase of the 143-acre property on Parker Hill Road Extension. According to Board of Finance Chairman, John McMahon this is the Town's largest purchase in recent memory. A small group of residents gathered in the Selectmen's conference room to witness the historic purchase and celebrate the event. The $2,440,432.90 check and title were exchanged and the deed officially recorded by Town Clerk Linda Dudek.
June Wettish Mamula and her husband John, from Plantsville, Conn. were the only Wettish family members present. Robert Wettish was represented by his attorney, Peter Melien. June Mamula said the most important thing to her is that the town now owns the property. At the conclusion of the paperwork, she handed First Selectman Marty Klein the decades-old keys to the small building and sheds. Klein said the property would probably always be referred to as the Wettish Property. Klein purchased $2.6 million worth of short term notes last Wednesday in preparation for the closing. The Town will look to sell municipal bonds in August following the outcome of the proposed sale of the Bosco Farmhouse and surrounding 14.22 acre parcel. The Town plans to roll the debt on the Wettish purchase and the remaining debt on the Bosco property into the bond sale. McMahon said if the bonds are sold as planned in August, the Town will start repayment on the debt in 2008. ![]() (top)Property owners John and June Mamula and Attorney Peter Melien (left) sit across from Town Attorney Michael Wells, First Selectman Marty Klein and Board of Finance Chairman John McMahon during the closing process. First Selectman Marty Klein offers his monthly column. As a 42-year resident of Killingworth, I know we are as challenged as any town, large or small, to meet the demands of rapid growth; fast-paced, mobile lifestyles; strain on the environment, and mounting economic pressures. Still, I was surprised by the urgency of many issues facing my administration. For example, the day I was to be sworn in as First Selectman I had a discussion with a representative from the government employees' union about a legal matter that had not been addressed for some time. So, before I officially took office, I was taking steps to avoid a lawsuit. Since then we have resolved this and other long-standing labor issues, including the distribution of insurance-related funds that employees were entitled to but had never received.
