Democratic Town Committee Endorses Malloy The Killingworth Democratic Town Committee has voted to endorse Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy in his bid for the Democratic nomination in the gubernatorial primary on August 8th.Committee Chairman Mike Sanders said Malloy, who received the state party's endorsement by winning the convention two months ago, is the only candidate who is prepared to address the state's over-dependence on the local property tax to fund education. "This is an issue that resonates throughout the state, especially in a small town like Killingworth," Sanders said. "Dan Malloy is the only candidate giving this issue the attention it deserves." Sanders, as well as his fellow committee members, were impressed with Malloy's record on several other issues. "By making job creation a priority in Stamford, designing the state's first universal pre-school program, and expanding access to healthcare, Dan Malloy has shown people across the state what is possible when our leaders are committed to improving the lives of their citizens. That makes endorsing him an easy decision." To the Editor:
The radical left wing of the Democratic party will do anything to attack the Bush Iraq war, and while I also think the war was ill conceived, politically motivated, and the peace poorly planned, the Democratic party is wrong for not supporting Senator Lieberman. They are throwing the baby out with the bath water in the biggest way. Senator Lieberman has represented all of the citizens of Connecticut very well throughout the Clinton years, the republican take over of congress, and the Bush years. Connecticut has benefited greatly during this period by the Senator's Independence from the party hacks and extremists by working progressively for the citizens of CT. The state will be the bigger loser if Joe Lieberman is not returned to the Senate, either, through the election of a Republican Senator or Ned Lamont a true political neophyte. Senator Lieberman has earned the respect of Senate colleagues of both parties, he seeks workable legislative compromises and he has always worked for the long term benefit of Connecticut and its' citizens. I will vote for Senator Lieberman in the primary and in the fall election regardless of which line his name is listed on. To the Editor:
I was recently sitting in a professional office and was surprised when I found myself overhearing a conversation about the people of Killingworth and how they were "spoiled brats" for complaining about the Reservoir Rd. project. A man said he has lived in Killingworth a long time and could not believe the whining he is hearing about the longer bus rides and the inconvenience of the road being closed. Among other issues he mentioned the closing of Lover's Lane. He mentioned that someone had voiced their opinion to him regarding it's closing and again this man criticized the people of Killingworth and basically said "He" would make the decision! I came to realize that this person was our first selectman himself, Mr. Marty Klein. Another comment made by Mr. Klein in reaction to a resident telling him that he would not get another one of his votes was, "I'm shaking in my boots." I was appalled to hear our selectman belittling and putting the residents of Killingworth down for voicing their opinions. I am embarrassed by his behavior and I think he should be, too. Mr. Klein, I think you owe this town an apology! The town of Killingworth is not owned by "one man." This is not about "power." We the people have the right to speak, and an obligation to each other to be respectful and to show compassion for the problems we encounter as individuals and as a community. I was impressed to see that Mr. Klein turned the Lover's Lane problem over to "the experts". The Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission. I was not surprised to see his name on list of members of that commission. Linda Mead KDTC Looking For Volunteers The Killingworth Democratic Town Committee has organized activities supporting the campaigns of its previously endorsed slate for the 2006 election: Ned Lamont, U.S. Senate; Joe Courtney, U.S. Congress; Dan Malloy, Governor; Ed Meyer, State Senator; Brian O'Connor, State Representative.
We need volunteers to get out the vote for two critical contests. The upcoming primary, on August 8th, will decide who controls our party and our agenda. Then, in November, we can send a resounding message of change to Hartford and to Washington. We believe government must be open, honest, capable, accountable and responsive to all our citizens. With your help, all that can start this summer. The KDTC values whatever time you can give, whether it's minutes, hours, or days. Please contact Gwenne Lally at 663-3747 to learn how you can help take back control of our government and our future. To the Editor:
In a recent Letter to the Editor, Jamie Young has suggested that I employ expert counsel with regard to Lovers Lane. I agree. Therefore, I have turned this matter over the Town of Killingworth's Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission. They are the experts. Martin Klein First Selectman Habitat for Humanity Looking for Volunteers This month, volunteers from Northern Middlesex Habitat for Humanity will be working with teens from Haddam and Killingworth and Youth and Family Services of H-K to construct one "house in a box" project for the Habitat for Humanity International Operation Home Delivery program for the hurricane victims on the Gulf Coast. The house frame will be built at a warehouse in Haddam, then it will be dismantled and all the other building materials necessary will be collected. All will then be loaded on a truck and sent to Mobile, Alabama where the Habitat for Humanity affiliate there will reconstruct it for family devastated by one of last summer's hurricanes. The Build Dates are: Phase I: July 20-21-22: Initial prep work Phase II: July 27-28-29: Full Build Days. Volunteers and crew leaders (folks with some framing construction experience who can give one or more days in Phase I & II) are needed. Volunteers to help with refreshments or lunch for the crews are also needed. This is a great way for families to become involved. Habitat for Humanity will be looking for other building material or cash donations to provide all necessary materials for building this house in Alabama. A list is available by calling Joyce Hatton Yarrow at 860/343-9179. All of this costs lots of money and takes lots of volunteers for successful projects. Anything you can do to help us out we would be grateful. It is a wonderful and rewarding experience - hope you can join us! For further information, or to volunteer for this project, call Cheryl Chandler, Executive Director of Youth and Family Services of Haddam-Killingworth, Inc. at 860/345-7498 or Joyce Hatton Yarrow, Executive Director of Northern Middlesex Habitat for Humanity at 860/343-9179 |
