Chatfield Hollow Closed for Swimming The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection has closed Chatfield Hollow State Park's beach area because of high bacteria levels. More test results will be reported today to determine if the swimming area can be opened for the Labor Day weekend.
Samples are collected weekly at state-run beaches by DEP staff and are analyzed at a Department of Public Health lab. Local health departments are responsible for routinely sampling their beaches and swimming areas. Indicator bacteria are not disease-causing pathogens, but are one of the tools used by public health and environmental protection authorities to evaluate the potential for contamination of waterbodies, according to the DEP. Helping Hands Gears Up For School Year With a new academic year upon us, Helping Hands of Killingworth is again gearing up its elementary school snack program. Wednesday, August 30, 2006Killingworth Mosquitoes Test Positive for West Nile VirusThe State Mosquito Management Program recently announced that five Connecticut residents, mostly in the West Haven and New Haven areas, have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV) infection. In addition, mosquitoes trapped in Killingworth, Milford, Newington, and Norwalk, August 16-23, tested positive for WNV, bringing the number of towns with documented WNV infected mosquitoes to 17. From now through September, the peak time for transmission of WNV to people, the Department of Public Health (DPH) is urging residents, especially adults 50 years or older, to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
Precautions to avoid mosquito bites include: - Minimize time outdoors at dusk and dawn - Be sure door and window screens are tight fitting and in good repair - Wear shoes, socks, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts. Clothing material should be tightly woven - Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors - Consider using mosquito repellent when it is necessary to be outdoors and always use them according to label instructions - When using DEET (the most widely used insect repellent), use the lowest concentration effective for the time spent outdoors (for example, 6% lasts approximately 2 hours and 20% for 4 hours) and wash treated skin when returning indoors. Do not apply under clothing, to wounds or irritated skin, the hands of children, or to infants less than 2 months Most people who are infected with West Nile and become ill will have a mild symptoms not unlike the flu. More serious symptoms can occur with people over 50 at the greatest risk for serious illness. Infrequently, people develop severe illness of the nervous system that can include neck stiffness, disorientation, loss of consciousness, tremors, muscle weakness and paralysis. Killingworth Clam Bake ![]() Tuesday, August 29, 2006Sale of Farmhouse Ends with Bond SaleKillingworth's Bond Counsel Marie Phelan said at last night's Board of Selectmen's meeting that the Town's proposal to sell the Bosco farmhouse and 14 surrounding acres is not possible now that the short term notes used to purchase the property back in 2000 have been rolled into the recent $3,295,000 bond issue. Phelan explained that state, federal regulations prohibit such a sale. Essentially the Town cannot use tax-free bonds to make money. The sale of the property would be considered a violation of the bond regulations.
First Selectman Marty Klein originally delayed the bond issue to see if the farmhouse and parcel could be sold to pay off some of the notes, prior to the bond issue. Though there was some interest in the property last spring, there were no offers. According to Phelan, the original notes on the 133-acre Bosco property were purchased with the understanding that they would be rolled into a municipal bond issue within eight years. She said the property may be used by the Town for almost any purpose or sold to a non-profit entity like a library. She also said that after five years the bond regulations might allow a sale, depending on the use of the money and how the sale was structured. Klein said he would like to see the farmhouse refurbished and used as a meeting house. He said the Town is responsible for taking care of the house or, if it cannot be refurbished, taking it down.
