Gus is a Good Guy!
You could not ask for a friendlier cat than Gus - or a much bigger one, either... In the room he shares with other homeless cats at the Forgotten Felines no-kill shelter, you will observe that he is the first to run to the door as soon as he sees a volunteer or visitor approaching! Once Gus has you in the room, he will not leave your side, brushing up against your legs and pleading for you to bend down and pet him.

Gus mysteriously showed up in the woods behind the office where a dedicated Forgotten Felines volunteer cares for a colony of homeless cats on weekends. He was too frightened to let her near him, and so ran further into the woods when approached. After Gus was safely caught in a humane cat trap, and brought to the volunteer's home, it was obvious that he was one of the most affectionate cats you will ever meet. He was already neutered, so clearly at one time he belonged to someone, and likely once been in a home of his own. Anyone lucky enough to adopt him would be loved and entertained for a lifetime. Please call Forgotten Felines today at 860-669-1347 to help Gus go to a loving home or to ask about other adoptable cat. There are also many ways to volunteer to help at the shelter. Local Women Participate in Triathlon
On a recent September morning, two women from Killingworth empowered themselves by competing in the Zane's Madison Triathlon. Charlene Torello and Cherie Toman spent the summer training and completed the ½-mile swim, 13-mile bike ride and a 3.1 mile run at the Surf Club in Madison.

The idea was presented to the two women by their personal trainer, Joey Morman of The Fitness Connection. Having competed in triathlons herself, Morman knows how empowering it is to train and then complete one. She offered to train them and though reluctant at first, they both decided, independently, to take her up on the offer. They spent the summer of 2006 swimming, biking and running many miles to get ready for the race.

"There were over 500 people racing that day and arriving at the race site at 5:45 am was overwhelming, to say the least." said Morman. But Torello and Toman both rose to the occasion, jumped into the 69 degree water at the 7:00 am start and finished with tears and smiles of triumph on their faces. Morman said, "The feeling of crossing the finish line is one that no coach or trainer can adequately prepare someone for." "It is a moment of joy and pain and accomplishment all wrapped up in one. I am certain that feeling will drive them to continue trying new experiences in their life." Congratulations to all three women for stepping up to the starting line and conquering this challenge.

Rep. O'Connor Supports 'InfantSEE' Program
House Speaker James Amann, together with members of the Connecticut Optometric Association, and Co-Chair of Healthy Kids CT and House Chairman of the Legislature's Insurance Committee Rep. Brian O'Connor commended the InfantSEE program, a no-cost public health service that provides early detection and treatment of vision impairments in infants.

"Private sector programs like these are vital to achieving our goal of improving health care access in the State of Connecticut," said Rep. Brian O'Connor. "The InfantSEE early detection program offers great opportunity for parents to help prevent future vision problems for their children."

According to the American Optometric Association's National InfantSEE program, only 13 percent of mothers with children younger than 2 years of age have taken their babies to an eye care professional for a regular check-up or well care visit.

Connecticut Optometrists will provide the eye examinations at no charge. Under InfantSEE, optometrists provide a one-time comprehensive eye and vision assessment to infants up to age one. Parents can locate participating optometrists and schedule an appointment by calling 1-888-396- EYES (3937) or the Connecticut Association of Optometrists' CAO Main Office at (860) 529-1900 or visiting www.infantsee.org

Connecticut optometrists are educated and trained to provide effective primary eye care and vision services to children. During the assessments, they focus the infant's attention on toys or cards with various sized stripes or pictures.

State Rep. Brian O'Connor addresses the media concerning the InfantSEE program.

Schools Fundraisers Coming Due
The Region 17 schools are in the midst of their fall fundraising efforts and are hoping to improve on last year's sales. The monies raised through these efforts go to pay for cultural arts programs, special school projects and for the high school, it pays for the wildly successful alcohol-free party on the night of graduation. Most of the schools have deadlines this week for returning forms.

Last year the generous response of giving to Hurricane Katrina victims may have resulted in the lower than normal sales for the school fundraisers. Volunteer organizers are hoping that in the hustle and bustle of the start of this school year, you can take a minute to think about giving a little closer to home. These funds help enrich the public school experience for our children; Please give generously. For more information on the different programs, contact the office staff at the respective schools.
