To the Editor:
It's time to start thinking how you'll feel after you kill someone's pet because you just had to speed through one of Killingworth's neighborhoods to get somewhere sooner. Start thinking now how it will feel if you hit a child that runs into the road to retrieve a toy, or that your speeding car frightens that horse that the person is riding and it runs off or rears causing the rider to fall off. Start thinking now of how your speeding is diminishing the quality of life for those people that live near that road. Start thinking now of your name in the Police Log for losing control of your car and causing an accident. Start thinking now. Now most of you are thinking and don't speed and this letter is not addressed to you, but is addressed to those that are not thinking of the consequences of their speeding, they need to start thinking now because these consequences might be huge and life changing. Letter to the Editor:
It is unfortunate that a letter in yesterday's Killingworth Today that purports to support Republican candidates and speaks of integrity is in reality about political spin, misrepresentation and name calling. Haven't we had enough of Rove campaign tactics that create a reality that does not exist? Since the election of 2000, the Bush administration has led this country down a path that has divided us as a people. Read more. To the Editor: Well here we are again, Joe and Rob.... Rob and Joe slinging all this off point rhetoric at each other. The real topic should be that we are at war with people who want to kill us all and do away with our way of life. For me, I require a representative in congress who understands what this country is up against and can do some thing about the problem. Rob Simmons is not only a retired Army Intelligence Officer but a CIA veteran as well. His intelligence background alone makes him very qualified to do the job for us. Simmons, with others, did a great job saving the Groton sub base and has kept Electric Boat working hard. Please join me and vote to send Rob Simmons back to Congress. Jim Cutler To the Editor: John F. Amport's recent letter to the editor regarding the upcoming election is somewhat puzzling. Mr. Amport speculates as to why the most Killingworth Democrats do not support Joe Lieberman in this election. The answer could not be more clear; he is not the Democratic Party's nominee and he has been plain wrong on the most important issues of our time. Read more. Wednesday, October 25, 2006
To the Editor:
I find it interesting that the Killingworth Democratic Town Committee can adapt the rationale for their support of candidates to fit their purposes. They think that experience, seniority and being principled men are virtues worthy of your vote for Mssrs. O'Connor & Meyer but not Lieberman, Simmons, or Rell. The reality is that those virtues are always worthy of people's vote. The real problem is that we all need to be pragmatic about what kind of change we want and how it can realistically happen. The first thing we can do, to paraphrase a high ranking Killingworth Democratic elected official, we need to get rid of "Senator Do Nothing". Ed Meyer talks about delivering for Killingworth but is very short on results. Don't you find it interesting that his big push is for Property Tax and Education? Read more. Donate a Pie to Helping Hands Although Thanksgiving seems a long way off, it is never too soon to start thinking of others. The Congregational Church in Killingworth is asking for your help to assist fellow Killingworth residents who have financial needs this holiday season. Helping Hands delivers Thanksgiving food baskets to Killingworth residents, and we'd like to provide a Lyman Orchards Pie to each basket. Help us reach the goal of donating 40 pies to Helping Hands. You can help by donating $11.00 per pie. Contact the church office at 663-1789 or Sue Anziano at 663-2176 for more information. The HK Boys Soccer team defeated Morgan, 2-1, under the lights last night at the Indian River Complex. Tuesday, October 24, 2006Klein Resurrects Office Building Study CommitteeFirst Selectman Marty Klein has asked the Town Office Building Study Committee to reconvene to look into options for a new town office building. He said, "We have to do something". He asked the committee to work with "all diligent speed" to find an alternative to the aging building. He recently replaced the roof and noted that the oil furnace and water pipes show significant signs of decay and that repairing or replacing them would be costly. He also said the portable units attached to the back of the old farmhouse were only planned to be used until 2010.
Klein said the staff offices are cramped and there is not enough meeting space to accommodate the Town's many committees. He has asked the TOBSC to look into all options including revisiting the purchase of the Pharmedica Building on Route 80. The committee was originally formed in the summer of 2004 and concluded that "there was no viable purchase option for any or all of the Pharmedica property". The thirty-page report is on file in the Town Clerk's Office. Recently, Klein looked into the option of restoring the Bosco Farmhouse for use as meeting space but reported that the Town's Building Official Richard Leighton estimated it would take $500,000 to bring the house up to code. The TOBSC held its first meeting last Thursday to elect officers. Gwenne Lally was elected to chair the committee. Also serving are Phil Evans, Jim Lally, Lou Annino, Sr., Hilary Kumnick, Bob Aft and Steve Hollander. This month, Killingworth Democratic Town Committee member Kathleen Amoia writes in support of the incumbent elected officials. The Killingworth Democratic Town Committee enthusiastically supports Brian O'Connor for reelection as State Representative in the 35th Assembly District and the reelection of Ed Meyer as State Senator in the 12th Senate District. Both candidates are active voices for the concerns of their constituents, as well as active participants in local events. They are personalities you can see and talk too throughout the year, not just faces that suddenly appear at election time. full story. ![]() The Killingworth Volunteer Fire Company responded to the following incidents during the week beginning Sunday, October 15, 2006: Sunday October 15: 3:19 AM: Mutual Aid to Clinton, Structure Fire, Walkly Mill Rd Monday October 16: 7:42 AM: Medical emergency, Fritz Rd. HK scored first with a goal by Corinne Mazzotta from a pass from Nici Gode. Morgan's goal was a free kick by Erika Saunders. Both goalies had eight saves each. The Cougars' next game is at Coginchaug on Thursday. The HK Volleyball team defeated North Branford, 3-0. Game scores were: 25-12, 25-12, 25-19. Jess Lindquist had 14 assists, Megan Murray had 11 kills and five digs and Erin Moriarty had two blocks and eight kills. The Cougars remain undefeated at 16-0. Facing their toughest test thus far, the JV football team played answered the bell and trounced North Branford, 44-12. A historically strong program from youth football all the way to the top, the T-Birds were marked as the team that could ruin HK's perfect JV record, but that was far from the truth. The day did not start off well for the Cougars as they went 3 and out on their opening possession. If that weren't not bad enough, the T-Birds blocked the punt and fell on the ball at HK's three-yard line. Though it took them four plays, they punched into the endzone for a 6-0 lead. Trailing for the first time all season, HK decided it was time to wake up and answer back. After North Branford kicked off, the Cougar offense sprung Sal Zichichi for a 53-yard run before he was caught from behind at the one-yard line. From there it was freshman Jared Hickey slamming his way into the endzone for a touchdown on the next play. Zichichi scampered in for the 2-point conversion and gave HK its 8-6 lead. After forcing NB to punt on its next possession, the Cougars again scored quickly with Adam Cubeta slashing his way 65 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Greg Zak passed to Cubeta for the 2-point conversion, 16-6 HK. The T-Birds attempted to close the gap before the half but HK was able to force a turnover as Brian "Bubsy" Chernauskas wound up with the ball after a T-Bird fumble. By utilizing their hurry up offense and timeouts, the offense finally found paydirt when Zak rolled right from the NB 8-yard line and drilled a pass to Hickey in the endzone as time expired in the half. Cubeta ran off tackle for the 2 point conversion and a 24-6 halftime lead. HK came out fired up in the second half as well. After stuffing NB's opening possession, Teddy Kanaras broke free for a long run down to the T-Bird four-yard line. From there is was Hickey again, this time for a four-yard touchdown run. Zichichi ran for the conversion and HK was cruising 34-6. From there on it was the Teddy Kanaras show and he scooped up a T-Bird fumble and returned it 37 yards for the touchdown. Then on the ensuing kickoff he grabbed a second loose football and scampered 22 yards for another score putting the Cougars up 44-6. North Branford would add a late touchdown to better their score, but the outcome was a dominating 44-12 victory for HK. The JV squad is now 5-0 and has outscored their opponents 207-32 on the year. They will face Cromwell next week. Monday, October 23, 2006Pumpkin Run This Sunday! The 13th Annual Pumpkin Run will take place on Sunday, October 29. Despite staying within striking distance for most of the game, HK was done in by the multiple weapons of the T-Birds offense. The day started out well for the Cougars as North Branford fumbled on its opening possession to give HK the ball at midfield. Unable to get anything going offensively, HK punted the ball away facing fourth down. The Cougar defense again held strong as it bent, but did not break on NB's next possession, forcing a punt. This trend continued until late in the first quarter when North Branford scored twice to make it 14-0. The score remained that way until halftime, thanks to Matt Difilippo's interception which ended a T-Bird drive that was deep in Cougar territory. Althugh HK had been outgained offensively almost 3 to 1 in the first half, the game was far from over at 14-0. HK came out to receive the second half kickoff and proceeded to push the ball into North Branford territory only to watch the drive stall. As a result, the ball was punted away and with it the best Cougar chance to score thus far. North Branford would score after engineering a long drive that chewed valuable time off the clock making it 21-0 T-Birds. HK would come back to answer in the quarter however, as an Alex Pollack pass intended for tightend Mike Theriault ricocheted off of a defender and landed securely in the hands of receiver Bill Kolodziej for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful and the score was 21-6. Unfortunately for the Cougars that would be all the offense they could muster on the afternoon as their remaining drives all stalled before finding the endzone. North Branford would tack another touchdown onto their score midway through the fourth quarter which proved to be the final 28-6. Offensively HK was led by Pollack's touchdown pass to Kolodziej as well as Jarrod Ramsey's 18 carries for 62 yards. The defense kept the game close despite yielding over 400 yards of offense to the T-Birds. Eric Auer had a terrific day defensively, recording 11.5 tackles, four of which were for a loss. Looking ahead, things do not get any easier for HK as they will host undefeated Cromwell next Saturday at home. ![]() Bill Kolodziej on a carry in the third quarter. |
