Captain John Marriott used his array of uniforms to illustrate to the assembly the path he took in his military career from West Point to Iraq and the many aspects of honor, team and service that the uniforms signify. He told the students the soldiers' jobs in Iraq now are particularly difficult because the enemy does not wear a uniform. He reminded the students to always show their respect and gratitude for the service men and women. Veterans Day is officially Saturday, but schools and Town Offices will be closed today in observance.

District Lays Out New Transportation Plan
Schools Superintendent Gary Mala and Director of Transportation Mike Zanelli presented the Region's new transportation plan at Monday evening's KES-PTO meeting. After a year-long review of the efficiency of the current program, the Board of Education and the District staff decided to investigate two alternatives for transporting students to the new Middle/Intermediate School on Route 81. Mala said the main goal was to continue to provide the high level of service parents and students are accustomed to.

The first alternative was to bid out the bus run to a private company. The BOE sent the route out to bid in July 2006 and received two bids in September. The lowest of the bids came back at $255,000 for the Jan. 07-June 07 timeframe and $634,000 for the Sept. 07-June 08 period. Mala found these numbers unacceptable and pushed his staff to find a way to accommodate the students within the current transportation plan. In addition to the financial consideration, Mala said maintaining control over the driver pool was important. Currently all but two of the District's drivers live in either Haddam or Killingworth and Mala said that provides a high level of trust.

After many months of study, Zanelli and his staff found that by adjusting the school start times by just 10 minutes, re-working some routes and using school vans to reach remote areas, the District can manage the Jan. 07-June 07 timeframe for approximately $53,500 and the full school year starting in September for approximately $235,000.

During the initial six months of the year, when the new school is servicing just seventh and eighth graders, the District will operate two bus routes. One for the elementary grades and one to accommodate the high school (grades 9-12) and middle school(grades 7 & 8). A supervised breakfast program will be available at both the high school and middle school to accommodate the drop-off to start-time gap. All bus routes will be re-published on the District's website by the end of November.

In the fall of 2007, the new school will service grades 5-8 and will have it's own bus route. The optional breakfast program will remain in place and Mala said the system will keep bus rides to approximately 30 minutes. The plan will require the purchase of one new bus for the routes starting in September, four additional drivers, plus additional costs for fuel and bus related expenses.

Details of this plan are available at www.rsd17.org and there are information sessions available for parents through next week.

The Cougar JV football team finally met their match against a physically imposing Hyde team and lost, 26-12. The loss drops the Cougars to 6-1 on the year and also ends their 13 game win streak dating back to last season.

The Cougars would enter the game short handed as starting QB Greg Zak and Lineman Carl Stuckey were unavailable due to injuries/illness. Despite this, the team came out swinging as they marched 65 yards on their first drive with Adam Cubeta racing into the endzone from 10 yards out to finish it off. The 2-point conversion was no good, but HK was up 6-0.

HK would attempt an onsides kick on the ensuing kickoff, and Ted Kanaras pounced on the loose ball which would swing the momentum completely into HK's favor. That emmotional lift would be short lived, as HK not only went three and out, but also saw leading rusher Sal Zichichi hurt his ankle. HK would punt the ball away on fourth down, and watch as Hyde drove the field for their first score. The 2 point conversion was intercepted by Mike DiGregorio, so the game remained tied 6-6.

Hyde would halt a Cougar drive and add another touchdown to their score which made it 12-6 Wolves at halftime. Depsite the ankle injury, Zichichi refused to call it quits as he remained in the game.

HK came out and started the second half by stuffing the Wolves' opening drive. After regaining possession HK would engineer a long drive that looked to be stalled as it faced a 3rd and 15 from the Hyde 25 yard line. Freshman quaterback Rob Flynn would refuse to let the drive end as he rolled to his right and threw a pass towards tight end Kyle Delldonna. Delldonna, who had a step on his defender, would make an incredible diving catch at the three yard line to give HK a first and goal. Three plays later fullback Nick Digioia would slam his way for a one yard touchdown run to tie the game at 12.

Hyde would answer back immediately as they threw a deep pass that was batted into the air and wound up in the arms of their wide receiver who would sprint his way into the endzone for a 18-12 Wolves lead. HK would begin another drive only to have it stall as Zichichi was stopped one yard short of a first down on 4th and 5 with under four minutes to go.

The Cougars refused to give up, as tackle Eric Gambardella would breath life back into his teammates by drilling a Hyde ball carrier and causing a fumble. Nick Digioia and Brian Chernauskas would dive on the ball to give HK possession in Hyde territory.

Unfortunately a bad snap would give Hyde the ball back with under 2 minutes to go. From there they would tack on another touchdown to ice it, 26-12.

For the Cougars, Zichichi finished with 15 carries and 73 yards rushing despite being hobbled by the injury. In the end, the Cougars were done in by their 4 turnovers. HK will return to action next Monday as they travel to Old Saybrook to play the Rams.

To the Editor:
Connecticut has had among the lowest job growth in the country since our state instituted an income tax fifteen years ago. Coupled with burdensome regulations and excess business taxes, we have driven good jobs right out of the state.

Gregg Hannan, the candidate for CT State Senate, will work towards establishing an economic environment for businesses to expand and succeed. A strong economy means more jobs for Connecticut's workers. It also means more stability for our families and a more reliable stream of tax revenues to take the burden off families' property taxes. It's about time.

I support Gregg Hannan's platform to improve our state's economy.
Sincerely,
Debby Butler

To the Editor:
Killingworth is fortunate to have two excellent representatives seeking re-election. Like Brian O'Connor, Senator Ed Meyer has fast become a true advocate for us in Hartford. Among other benefits to our community, Senator Meyer helped win $250,000 in state funding for renovations to our town hall and secured $15,000 to fund a study to accommodate the Town's Historical Society Collection. And, while at the Killingworth Elementary School spaghetti fundraiser for new playground equipment, he quickly sought out the chairperson to suggest she provide some information he could use to pursue funding at the state level. He clearly loves what he does. And, we benefit from his ideas, experience, and wisdom. Read More

To the Editor:
We are at the end of this election/campaign season. The Killingworth Democratic Town Committee has publicly endorsed Ned Lamont for Senator; Joe Courtney for the United States House of Representatives; Ed Meyer for the State Senate; Brian O'Connor for the Assembly and John DeStefano for Governor. As a political Town Committee, the KDTC does not engage in political distortion or deception. Read more

HK Sports
The HK varsity football team lost a very competitive game to Hyde Leadership, 28-14, on Saturday.

The day started out bright enough as HK stuffed the Wolves' first drive on three plays. It would soon get ugly as the first HK play from scrimmage was intercepted by Hyde and returned 43 yards for a touchdown. From there till halftime, onlookers watched as Hyde would build a, 21-0, lead against a listless Cougar squad that seemed to be playing on their heels.

Following the intermission however, Hyde would find themselves playing on their heels as HK came on swinging on both sides of the ball. After turning the ball over due to a fumble, the Cougars would force Hyde into a fourth down situation that the Wolves decided to go for. Peter Harrington would shoot off the backside to bury the Hyde quarterback before he got the pass attempt off. The good field position would lead to a Jarrod Ramsey 6 yard touchdown run, while the two point conversion run by Bill Kolodziej would pull HK within 21-8.

HK would soon strike again following a Matt DiFillippo 33-yard interception return at the end of the 3rd quarter. Opening the 4th quarter, HK would find themselves manhandling the Hyde defense for their entire 50-yard touchdown drive. Bill Kolodziej would fight his way into the endzone for a five-yard score to finish it. The two point conversion would be no good, but the Cougars were now down only 21-14 with just under 10 minutes to go.

That would be as close as HK would get however, as Hyde turned their effort up a notch and sustained a long scoring drive of their own that resulted in a touchdown with just under six minutes to go in the game. The extra point was good and Hyde held on for a 28-14 victory.

The Cougars' bright spots on the day belonged to the offensive backs who combined for 266 yards rushing on 49 carries. Bill Kolodziej had a personal best 119 yards on 16 carries to go with his touchdown and 2-point conversion run. HK will return to action next Saturday against Old Saybrook-Westbrook. It will be the final home game for the seniors.
