Thursday, December 07, 2006 HK Sports Update on High School and Middle School Evacuation On Monday afternoon it was reported to Region 17 School officials that a threatening message was scratched into a privacy screen in a restroom near the high school's music department. According to Schools Superintendent Gary Mala, the message threatened that a bomb would go off at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 5. School officials contacted the State Police then implemented the District's procedure to canvass the two schools for anything suspicious or out of place. Approximately a dozen staff members executed the grid-based search. On Monday evening, failing to find anything out of the ordinary, it was decided that the schools would open as usual on Tuesday.
Mala said in collaboration with the State Police, three options for the school day were considered. The first was to cancel school for Tuesday. The second was to have an early dismissal prior to the time stated in the threat. Mala said he arranged for buses to be warmed up and ready at 1:00 p.m in case they were needed. The third option, which was ultimately chosen, was to evacuate the school for a period of time prior to and following the time of the threat. When the school day started at 7:30 a.m. six State Troopers were on the grounds and Mala called First Selectmen Tony Bondi of Haddam and Marty Klein of Killingworth to inform them of the situation. At 1:20 p.m the students were escorted to the farthest points from the school buildings. Students were allowed back to their classes at 1:40 p.m. At that time, the Honeywell Instant Alert System was implemented to inform parents and guardians of the threat, the evacuation and the outcome. Mala said an investigation is continuing for the person responsible for the note. He said the police and the District are taking the threat very seriously. Mala said making such a threat is a felony offense.
