To the Editor:
On behalf of Helping Hands and the Women's Organization, we would like to thank all who participated to help make the Greg Bousquet Wish Fulfillment Drive a huge success this year. We collected about 100 gift cards and over 100 gifts, to be distributed to the children and senior citizens in Killingworth that needed some assistance this holiday season. Many thanks also to KES, St. Lawrence church, the Killingworth Kid's Center and Emmanuel church for posting and collecting list items. This Drive could not have succeeded without the help and support of the many caring people in our town. Best wishes for a very happy holiday season!

Thanks for the Spectacular Success
This past Saturday the Killingworth Lights Spectacular was a wonderful evening for families and as a fundraiser for the Killingworth Ambulance Association. The Gorski family of Wolf Hollow Lane and the Killingworth Women's Organization hosted an evening full of holiday cheer. Children of all ages enjoyed the amazing lights display of the Gorski's, which included new features such as a handmade revolving holiday cheese wedge complete with wooden mice and Santa's water world. Santa was on hand with small gifts and candy canes for the kids.

The KWO would like to give special thanks to Killingworth resident Paul Pitts and HK's superintendent Gary Mala for their help make the evening special for the children. Also, Killingworth resident John Kuzminski of East of the River Classics brought his classic fire engine full of holiday lights to enrich the experience for all. The estimated crowd of 450 people raised $650.00 for the Killingworth Ambulance Association. This money, in addition to other money donated into the Gorski's special mailbox on their lawn, will be donated to the Ambulance Association in January. Thank you to the Gorski family and all who were involved in making the evening such success!

HK-TV Holiday Show Telethon
Watch the HK-TV Holiday Show Telethon LIVE on Comcast Channel 18 tomorrow, December 22 between 8:00 a.m. and noon.

This year, the show will benefit The Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer. The mission of The Tommy Fund is simple: to provide emotional, educational, medical, and recreational support to children with cancer and their families, and to improve the cure rate of childhood cancer through the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and the Yale University School of Medicine.

One hundred percent of the money donated through the efforts of the Holiday Show will help support this great organization. There are minimal administrative costs with many volunteers donating their time.

In the spirit of the holiday season, HKTV is hoping you will make a donation. This year's Holiday Show will be in the form of Shoreline Idol competition with students from surrounding towns singing for a chance to be awarded a $1,000 scholarship provided by Lenny and Joes: A Fish Tale. Gifts ranging from dinner certificates to theatre tickets will be randomly awarded during our live telethon to donors pledging $25 or more. All contributions are greatly appreciated and tax deductible.

Another Threat Evacuates High School and Middle School
The Regional School District reported today that high school and middle school students were evacuated from the school buildings as a precaution in response to a threat written in a high school restroom. The threat was similar to the one that caused the schools to be evacuated on Tuesday, December 5, but officials say the threats appear unrelated.

Working with State Police, the district evacuated the students at 12:20 p.m. and after concluding that the threat was not credible, students were returned to classes at 12:45 p.m. The December 5th incident was a message threatening that a bomb would go off. No information was available as to the nature of today's message.

HK Sports
The HK Girls Basketball team defeated Valley Regional last night, 77-63. Shelby VanHuysen led the Cougars with 25 points including 3 three-point buckets. HK dominated the whole game leading, 45-26, at the half. Megan Murray also had a strong night adding 16 points. The Cougars are 4-1 on the year.

Fire Company Tests New School Readiness
In preparation for the January opening of the new Haddam-Killingworth Middle School on Route 81, the Killingworth Volunteer Fire Company conducted a series of readiness tests on Sunday, December 10.

During the drill the KVFC flow-tested all of the standpipes in the building, reviewed and tested the fire pumps and brought in Clinton Fire Company's 110-foot ladder truck to confirm emergency personnel's ability to access all sides of the building and set the truck up. The outriggers/stabilizers on the truck require a 22-foot wide area. This width was incorporated into the design of the access road.

The Fire Company members have also conducted several walk-throughs of the building to familiarize themselves with the layout of the school and the fire protection systems. Fire Chief Dick Bauer praised Building Official Dick Leighton for his foresight, expertise and support throughout the construction process. Bauer said "Leighton kept the KVFC involved in every aspect of the fire protection plan for this school which has greatly paid off as we finalize our pre-incident planning". "The Town of Killingworth is fortunate to have someone with Dick's expertise in this role, we are grateful for his support of the KVFC during this project and at other projects throughout town."

The Haddam-Killingworth 11-U travel girls team finished the first half of the season with a spotless 7-0 record with a narrow win at home vs. West Haven 37-34 on Sunday. Bagwell Calls it a Career
Killingworth native Jeff Bagwell, who played 15 seasons for the Houston Astros and will likely be a candidate for the Hall of Fame, announced his retirement on Friday after arthritis in his right shoulder caused him to miss the 2006 season.

Bagwell, 38, hit .297 in his career, with 449 home runs and 1,529 RBI. He finished his career as the Houston franchise's all-time leader in home runs, runs batted in and walks. A four-time All-Star, Bagwell played in 15 Major League seasons from 1991-2005, winning the National League Most Valuable Player award in 1994 and the National League Rookie of the Year award in 1991. He is one of only nine players in NL history to win both the MVP and Rookie of the Year awards in a career.

Bagwell will remain with the Astros organization as an advisor to General Manager Tim Purpura. He will assist the club's Major League baseball operations staff with its Major and minor league player development programs, the Astros hitting development program, the amateur draft, scouting and minor league team operations and evaluations. He will also spend time with the club in Spring Training, providing instruction to players and staff and evaluating both Major and minor league players. Read more about him in the Hartford Courant.
