KSA Scholarship Applications Available
The Killingworth Scholarship Association is offering scholarships to graduating seniors who are residents of Killingworth. In addition to those from the Killingworth Scholarship Fund, scholarships are available for Political Science and Education majors from the Kent T. Healy and Kathy Weiss funds, respectively. Family income is not a consideration for awarding these scholarships.

Applications are available online through our website at www.KillingworthToday.com/KSA/ and require completion of a questionnaire and essay. The most promising candidates will be invited for an interview in late April/early May. All interested students are encouraged to download an application and return the completed form via email by the deadline of April 2, 2007 to KSACommittee@hotmail.com.
Over the last three decades the Killingworth Scholarship Association has awarded over $90,000 to many outstanding students. Each year the committee, consisting of community volunteers, reviews applications from an impressive group of young men and women. Several students are then selected for scholarships based on their academic achievement, character, leadership skills, and participation in school and community activities. The amount of each scholarship varies depending on both the number of successful applicants and the amount received from residents, businesses and organizations of both Killingworth and neighboring communities. Scholarship recipients are announced in the local media in late June.

If you are interested in supporting our scholarship program, please mail your tax-deductible contribution to: The Killingworth Scholarship Association, Inc., c/o Treasurer, PO Box 653, Killingworth, CT 06419. Please remember that employer matching gift programs can double your contribution!

HK Sports
The HK Boys Basketball team lost a, 70-73, nail-biter last night to Morgan of Clinton. The Cougars were down, 10-20, early and struggled in the first half to stay with the Huskies. The large crowd, including the student section's Cougar Crazies never doubted that the squad could narrow the gap. With 6:44 left in the game, HK tied the score at 52 on a three-pointer from Steve Landell. The Huskies answered right back but HK had the momentum and kept the score tight. With just 13 seconds left, HK down, 70-71, Morgan turned the ball over and gave the Cougars a chance at the win. A questionable call by the official gave the ball back to Morgan and time ran out before HK could have another possession. Dan Wendt led HK with 24 points followed by Landell with 21.

The HK Boys Junior Varsity also fell to the visiting Huskies. Matt Martin, Brendan Hatin and Greg Cumpstone each had 11 points to lead the Cougars in the 51-57 losing effort.

Golf Tournament Plans Underway
Plans for the Second Annual John P. Hine, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament, to be held at the Clinton country Club on Monday, June 11, 2007, are well underway. This event is a major fundraiser for the Killingworth Library. The Tournament Committee, chaired by Shelly Cumpstone, hopes to surpass 2006's goal of $10,000.

Letters have already been sent out to last year's sponsors and donors and to potential newcomers. The generosity of the business and artistic community are an essential part of the Golf Tournament's sponsorship and a major source of donated auction items. Since the Killingworth Library is a non-profit organization, all contributions are tax-deductible.

Golfers can begin planning their foursomes and sign up early to guarantee a spot. There is a maximum capacity of 140 golfers and the success of the 2006 Annual John P. Hine, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament is bringing many teams back. Shelly Cumpstone is the contact person. She can be reached at 860-663-2747.

It's a treasure hunt of sorts that begins at the Town Clerk's office and purchasing a copy of the Historical Society book "A Photographic History of Killingworth". When you buy a copy of the book, ask for the Seven Mile Tour of Killingworth. The tour will start at the traffic circle and if you follow the referenced pages in the book and the tour guide, you will travel through historic Killingworth and learn about many of the early homes and inhabitants and other notable events. The tour was written by Historical Society President, Robert Broach. Now that winter has finally settled in, have some local fun and then head home for some hot chocolate and a new appreciation for our town!

Help Mend a Broken Heart
Jaclyn's story begins, as is often the case with most of the cats we rescue, with a call from a concerned homeowner about a cat who had taken up residence in her garage, and was limping badly. When we investigated further, we came upon Jaclyn, who had serious bite wounds that needed immediate attention.

Jaclyn's wounds soon healed, but a heart condition diagnosed during her medical check-up would last a lifetime. Jaclyn has Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). HCM, a heart disease where areas of heart muscle enlarge and thicken, is the most common heart disease in cats. Her condition is currently managed with medicine given once per day, which she readily takes.

In addition to HCM, Jaclyn's heart also suffers from the sadness that longing for a real family brings. She has been here for quite some time now, which is very perplexing, since she is an amazingly loving, charming, and beautiful cat. Her favorite activities include sunbathing in a comfy cat bed, being stroked and fussed over by her human companions, and bird watching. Although we all give Jaclyn as much love and attention as possible, it is still no substitute for an actual family and home. She is an extraordinary cat, and her dream - as well as ours - is to have a loving family and to be someone's special sweetheart on Valentine's Day and every day of the year.

Many kind-hearted people have come forward over the years to open their homes to our cats that were down on their luck. We are hoping for the same for Jaclyn so she does not have to live her life in our shelter. If you can give Jaclyn a home, or would like to meet some of our other kitties, please call our Adoption Director at 860-669-1347 or find us on the web at www.forgottenfelinesct.org.
