HK Sports
The Haddam-Killingworth Varsity Baseball team suffered a tough luck loss to the hands of the Westbrook Knights 2-1 in 8 innings on Friday April 13th.

The loss spoiled a sterling effort by Cougar southpaw Lou Annino, who dominated the Knights from the mound for most of the afternoon.

HK opened the scoring in the 3rd when Steve Landell drove a deep fly ball over Westbrook's center fielder, that rolled all the way to the fence. Landell, who was hustling around the bases, made it home without a throw for an inside-the-park homerun, his second homerun of the young season.

The Cougars looked poised to break the game open the following inning when they loaded the bases with no outs. They would waste the opportunity however, leaving all three runners stranded on base. That turn of events seemed to breath life back into Westbrook.

The Knights would answer back when they strung together a walk and two singles in the 4th to push across a run which tied the game at one.

The score would remain knotted at one which pushed the game into extra innings. It was there that Westbrook caught their break in the bottom of the 8th. With two outs and runners on 1st and 2nd, a bloop single ended the game as the winning run crossed the plate.

Annino pitched all 8 innings, scattering 8 hits, a walk, and striking out a career high 9 batters. HK falls to 2-2 (2-1). They will be back in action at 3:45 on Monday, April 16th against North Branford, weather permitting.

The HK Softball team defeated Westbrook, 14-8. Lindsey Griswold helped her own cause on the mound with a double and Ally Pratt had a triple.

The HK Boys Tennis team blanked Portland 7-0.

The HK Girls Golf team tied East Catholic at 235.

HK Sports
The Haddam-Killingworth Baseball team continued its winning ways on Wednesday as it defeated the Howling Wolves of Hyde, 14-3. HK was lead by Steve Landell's performance on the mound (7 innings, 4 hits, 2 walks, and 10 K's) and their relentless offensive effort.

The Cougars wasted little time getting on the board as they scored four runs in the bottom of the first. The big hit of the frame was AJ Margnelli's RBI single. Hyde would close the gap to 4-3 by the third however, thanks in part to HK's defensive miscues, though the game would not be close for very long.

HK came to bat in the bottom half of the inning and extended it's lead with six runs that pushed the score to 10-3. Bill Kolodziej, Peter Rynkowski, and Chris Drexler all collected RBI singles in the inning.

The Cougars would push across four more runs before it was said and done to make the final score of 14-3. HK was led at the plate by Margnelli (3-4, 3RBI), Landell (1-3, 3RBI), Drexler (2-3, 2 RBI), and Rynkowski (2-3, 1 RBI).

The win puts HK at 2-1 (2-0 Shoreline), while Hyde drops to 0-2 (0-2). The Cougars will resume action on Friday, April 13th as they travel to play Westbrook in a Shoreline Conference match-up.

The HK Lacrosse team defeated Old Saybrook, 9-6. Danielle Filosi scored three goals and Celia Marcum, Nicole Pedonti, Sarah Gecicle, Cat McDermott, Jackie Buttendorf, Sally Parmela each scored a goal. Kim Peterson had 12 saves in goal for the Cougars.

The HK Girls Tennis team fell to East Hampton, 4-3. The teams split the singles matches and HK's top doubles team won, but the number 3 doubles match decided the contest.

HK Sports
The Haddam-Killingworth Baseball team traveled to league rival Cromwell Monday afternoon and posted its first win of the season with a convincing 12-0 shut out of the Panthers.

H-K would jump on top early when Lou Annino laced an RBI single with two outs in the first inning. The Cougars would then post two big back-to-back innings in the third and fourth. In the third H-K would cross the plate four times, highlighted by another RBI single by Annino which was followed quickly by A.J. Margnelli's RBI single. When all was said and done, the Cougars found themselves up 5-0.

The fourth inning opened with back-to-back singles by Alex Pollack and Peter Rynkowski. Steve Landell then drilled a 3-run homerun over the right field fence to put HK up 8-0. The Cougars would tack on an unearned run to push their lead to 9-0 after four.

Meanwhile, Annino was in the middle of throwing a complete game four hit gem. He walked only two batters while striking out five for the win. HK broke Cromwell's back in the sixth inning when Mike Theriault drove a bases loaded triple into the gap that scored all three base runners. Annino led the Cougars on the mound and at the plate going 3 for 4 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Of the 11 Cougar hitters that had at bats on the day, 9 had at least one hit. The defense also spun two smooth double plays on the afternoon. HK evens its record to 1-1 and will host a Shoreline Conference showdown with Hyde at 3:45 on Wednesday in Higganum.

Youth & Family Requests Funding Increase to Maintain Programs
Youth and Family Services of Haddam - Killingworth, faced with the uncertainty of year to year, and program to program grant funding, has requested additional support from both towns to maintain its programs and bring important services up to acceptable levels. The non-profit agency had a budget of $300,000 last year, with approximately $80,000 provided from the towns' budgets. The agency has requested $95,000 from each town this year. The primary reasons for the additional funding request, according to YFS board member Mark Torello is to increase staffing and clinical hours, replace antiquated office equipment and provide a consistent level of programming.

At a meeting last week with members of the Board of Selectman and Board of Finance from both Haddam and Killingworth, YFS Executive Director Cheryl Chandler presented a capsule of its programs, the range of services offered and the need for additional support. She said money is needed to hire a full-time administrative assistant to allow her to spend more time in the community and yet "keep the doors open" for children seeking services during the day. Currently she said she often has to close the offices when she has off-site meetings because the other four staff members are only part-time. She said some of the money would go towards smaller needs like a telephone with a hold button and a new computer server, but funding is also necessary to better compensate valuable staff, qualify for matching grants and to serve as a buffer so programs aren't canceled if a grant falls through.

Last summer a $16,000 American Savings Foundation grant for a six week program for 11 to 18-year olds fell through and YFS was forced to turn away the 45 children who were referred.

Chandler said the children's needs are growing and it is increasingly important to reach kids sooner. She said the increased need for counseling and mentoring services at the elementary school level has stretched their resources even more.

Town officials questioned whether Youth & Family's services are necessary when counseling is available in the schools. YFS Chairperson Denise Stevens outlined some of the programs that complement school counseling but emphasized that the schools do not counsel parents and families, and that YFS provides many services outside of school hours. She said there was no duplication of services but it was important that the two support systems work together. Mindy Otis, the Region 17 Director of Pupil Services also serves on the YFS board.

Killingworth Board of Finance member Gwenne Lally, First Selectman Marty Klein and Haddam First Selectman Tony Bondi asked Chandler to lay out the agency's five-year plan and to explain how the program's successes are quantified. Bondi said he needs more information on the agency's business model to see where it is going down the road. Klein said he also needs to see the projections. Haddam Selectwoman Tanja Moriarty said, "This is a proactive, positive jewel that should be supported". She cautioned that "these are children and families not just a bottom line". Killingworth BOF member Hilary Kumnick said he was in favor of funding the full increase. He said he is pleased that YFS now has an office in Killingworth and thinks the programs are important.

Later in the week at the Haddam BOS meeting, Moriarty proposed increasing Haddam's portion from $45,000 to $75,000. Her motion was defeated. However, at the Haddam BOF meeting, member Ed Schwing proposed an increase to $65,000 and it was approved. The Killingworth Board of Selectmen has recommended $45,000. The Board of Finance will meet again on Tuesday. Both Towns' officials agreed that public support for the increased funding could sway their decision.

HK Sports
The Haddam-Killingworth Junior Varsity Baseball team opened its season with a, 5-4, win over Hale Ray on Saturday. Andrew Callahan and Mike Ossa split the pitching duties. The Cougars were down 3-1 going into the fifth but clutch hitting from Connor Bremer and Robbie Flynn started a rally and pulled the team together for the win.

Sean Zapatka is safe at home for the Cougars' winning run.
