Klein Seeks Increased Tax Revenue from Water CompanyFirst Selectman Marty Klein says the Connecticut Water Company should not only pay property taxes on its Killingworth land holdings, but should pay the taxes on the water it pumps from the Town's watershed.
According to the Middletown Press Klein said, "Unlike the public utility that is the Water Authority, CWC is a private company owned by stockholders and is no more deserving of a privileged tax status than any conventional business".
Klein and North Branford's Town Manager Karl Kilduff recently met with State Sen. Edward Meyers regarding the issue. The South Central Regional Water Authority is North Branford's water utility. Read more about this story in today's Middletown Press.

Book Donation Benefits Pediatric Clinic Patients
Students from Killingworth Elementary School passed on the importance of reading to pediatric patients at the Hospital of Saint Raphael this week with the donation of more than 200 children's books.
In early-May, Killingworth students collected 242 books in all, said Jessica Maynard, a KES mathematics intervention teacher "The book drive was in memory of Sandra Higgins, who was a library paraprofessional at KES for 13 years. The school community wanted to donate new children's book to the hospital to honor her memory and love for reading," said Maynard.
Once collected the school affixed bookplates and packed the books. They were brought to Saint Raphael's on Wednesday, June 13. Mrs. Higgins' husband, David, and her daughter, Rebecca, were on hand for the donation.
Sandra Higgins fought breast cancer for three years, with much of her treatment at saint Raphael's Father Michael J. McGivney Center For Cancer Care, he daughter said. "Our students and staff were honored to take part in this book drive, which will pass on the memory of Sandra Higgins and the joy of reading to those less fortunate, said Killingworth Elementary school principal, Rita Peretto.
The books will be donated to the pediatric reading room Saint Raphael's clinic, as part of a program co-sponsored with the Read to Grow organization, said Lynelle Abel, director of Saint Raphael's volunteer services. "Hospital volunteers read to children and educate them on the importance of reading,' Abel said. "Each child leaves with a donated book." Book donations from the community are always welcomed, Abel said.

To the Editor:
We wanted to send a note regarding a very hard working neighbor who has been working to improve the neighborhood.
Particularly, Kevin Dooley of Saddlebrook Drive, has been clearing brush from the road sight lines for the safety, as well as aesthetic beauty of Welsh Farm Road. (Yes, a town duty)
We would like to thank Kevin publicly even though I'm sure he is not looking for a public thanks. He is a hard worker because...he is a hard worker.

Middle School Students Honored as Student LeadersThe Connecticut Association of Schools honored the state's top middle school scholar leaders last week with an awards banquet at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington. Haddam-Killingworth Middle School eighth graders Emily Anderson, daughter of Ann and Eric Anderson and Patrick Hudson, son of David and Vicky Hudson, both of Killingworth, were chosen by the middle school faculty for demonstrating high academic achievement; providing service to classmates and school; serving as a positive role model and demonstrating integrity, honesty, self-discipline and courage.
McDonald's Restaurant owners have sponsored the annual banquet for the past twenty-three years on both the middle and high school level. Each of the 145 Connecticut middle schools chose a boy and a girl for the award. The 290 honorees, escorted by their parents, were encouraged to invite a favorite teacher to attend the banquet. Anderson invited her 7th grade math teacher Jennifer Bell and Hudson invited his 7th grade English teacher Elaine Schaedler.
In addition to the individual awards the banquet honored the state' top middle schools, faculty and staff. The keynote address was given by Connecticut Deputy Commissioner of Education George Coleman.

Happy June! The kids will be out of school soon and summer is upon us. With Spring coming so late it seems like all of the garden chores are taking a long time. Each spring I love to watch and see what is doing well and thriving. This year I seem to have lost a few old favorites, probably due to the funny warm and long winter we had, but that just gives me a chance to visit my local garden centers and choose something new! The irises are in bloom and I am anxious to find some of the new reblooming varieties that are now available. Read more!
