Selectmen Acknowledge Illegal Vote
The Board of Selectmen acknowledged Monday that the vote on transfer station hours made at its April 23rd regular meeting was illegal in procedure. According to Town Attorney Michael Wells, the board should have first voted to add the item to the agenda. The Board discussed the transfer station hours again at Monday's regular meeting and then voted to retain the hours as it did in the illegal vote. The Town's Pay As You Throw Committee filed the complaint with the state's Freedom of Information Commission. Wells pointed out that the PAYT also violated proper procedure when it added discussing the complaint to its special meeting agenda. Special meetings do not allow additions to the agenda. Wells said at Monday's meeting that FOI's ombudsman would discuss the issue with both sides and try and resolve the matter.

Democratic Ticket on Hold
According to today's Hartford Courant, The Democratic Town Committee deferred a planned July 8 endorsement vote for the fall election after interviews with the leading candidates. First Selectman Marty Klein announced recently he was interested in seeking re election but said in an interview that he might reconsider if Selectman Ed Sipples was also on the ticket. The Committee reportedly interviewed long-time KDTC member Cathy Ino and former First Selectman Rick Albrecht as well as Sipples and Klein.
To the Editor:
One year ago last month I expressed my amazement and concerns, on these pages of the apparent disregard for the speed limit on secondary roads in Killingworth. Judging by the immediate response and subsequent commentary apparently I was not the only concerned resident. Within the past twelve months the situation has gone from intolerable to out of control. The average speed on Chestnut Hill Road is without a doubt well above the posted limit and some of the offenders who are flagrantly breaking the law show no regard for the safety of the pedestrians and cyclists they speed past.

Simply put the town selectmen need to take action and they need to do it now. This problem has gone beyond a quality of life issue. It is one of safety and we can all only hope that changes are made before someone is seriously injured. The selectmen need to organize a greater law enforcement presence, add more signs or install speed ramps on the secondary roads where the speed limits are being ignored. Should the cost of any additional resources be passed on in the form of higher property taxes then that it is a burden I for one am prepared to accept for my safety and that of my neighbors.
