Summer Camp at The Arts CenterTen Fashionistas strike a pose at the 2nd Annual Fashion Week Camp hosted by The Arts Center at Killingworth. Campers sewed their own skirts and shorts, designed and created jewelry to go with their outfits, and on one fun day, embellished a pair of jeans. The last day of Camp, the young Fashionistas participated in a T-shirt design contest, fashion show and photo shoot, all organized by Couture designer Astrid Niemelaeinen. Ms. Niemelaeinen also generously donated snacks and take-home gifts for the afternoon celebration.

Recently, participants at the Third Annual Manga and Cartooning Camp hosted by The Arts Center at Killingworth explored Manga and a variety of cultural activities of Japan. Held in mid-July and lasting an entire week, campers created Manga drawings and scenes, made and enjoyed sushi, and participated in Japanese self-defense workshops and craft projects. Regional Officials Hear Advice on Planning
Officials from area towns met at the Killingworth firehouse yesterday to listen to planning advice from state and regional experts. The meeting offered a variety of information and advice on "big picture" issues such as emergency management and homeland security, transportation and community growth. These are issues communities may have to cope with at complex and sometimes perilous times. Read more about this meeting the today's New Haven Register.

Hurricane Season is Upon Us Again
The Killingworth Office of Emergency Management would like to remind all residents to prepare for the inevitability of another major storm affecting our community. While State and Federal aid will arrive eventually we all must be prepared for the probability that it make take days and even weeks for this aid to arrive.
Hurricane forecasts for 2006 missed the mark largely due to a strong El Niño event which weakened storm activity. The energy from El Niño starts with a huge, warmer-than-normal "bathtub" of seawater that races from west to east in the Pacific and across the continent and eventually results in atmospheric energy that shears the tops off Atlantic storms before they can really intensify.
The latest forecast predicts that for 2007 that El Niño shouldn't be a factor. That means that hurricane activity will be enhanced this season. We should expect to see roughly17 named storms to form in the Atlantic, with nine of those storms becoming hurricanes. Five of the hurricanes are expected to develop into major storms (Categories 3, 4, and 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale) with wind speeds of 111 mph or greater.
To put this into perspective the category three "New England Express" hurricane of 1938 was in terms of fatalities and property damage one of the worst disasters in North American history. In a matter of hours, 688 people were killed, 4500 were injured, and more than 75,000 buildings were damaged. Millions of trees were also downed blocking hundreds of miles of roads for weeks.
For the state of Connecticut it was it was the worst natural disaster in recorded history. The tidal wave like storm-surge that hit Long Island and Rhode Island was so severe that earthquake instruments 3,000 miles away recorded it on seismographs.
Hurricane Gloria, a category two hurricane at landfall, brought strong wind gusts to the area, downing thousands of trees and leaving over 2 million people without power. Overall, Gloria caused $900 million in property damage throughout the northeast and 8 deaths, a total lower than expected due to the hurricane's arrival at low tide.
The Killingworth Office of Emergency Management encourages all Killingworth residents to utilize the web sites listed below to prepare your family for a natural disaster.
Any resident with special needs and or disabilities are encouraged to register at the www.ct.gov/demhs website. This is a 911 special needs site that will alert emergency services of your specific needs so that the proper authorities can prepare to rapidly provide the necessary aid during a natural disaster.
There is no question that we will again experience a storm of the magnitude of the 1938 "New England Express" or due in part to Global Warming, greater in magnitude. The only question is when. I urge everyone to please prepare now.

To the Editor:
The Killingworth Democratic Town Committee is proud to present its slate of candidates for the November 2007 elections. Two years ago, Killingworth Democrats came together and presented a platform and a slate of candidates to the residents of the town. We were confident that our commitment to an energetic, proactive government would be accepted by a majority of our residents, and indeed it was. Democrats, Republicans, and independents, seeing that the time had come for a change in our town leadership, elected Marty Klein, Ed Sipples, and other Democrats running on a clearly articulated progressive platform. We are deeply appreciative of all the hard work that Marty Klein has given to the town of Killingworth. His energy, drive, and intelligence have moved the town forward at a pace that we had not seen in a long time.
The ticket that was voted out of the Democratic Caucus on July 22nd will pursue the agenda that Marty and Ed set in motion. As we all know, the town is growing, and we need steady leadership to manage that growth and protect the qualities that drew us all to Killingworth in the first place. Our team and our platform will continue to meet that challenge vigorously and creatively.

Former First Selectman Tapped in Democratic CaucusFormer First Selectman Richard Albrecht defeated incumbent Marty Klein in the Democratic caucus Sunday for the top spot for November's election. The Democratic Town Committee endorsed Klein and selectmen Edward Sipples and Catherine Ino on the ticket but Albrecht was nominated from the floor and after a paper ballot vote, came out the winner. Sipples and Ino were accepted unanimously.
According to KDTC member Gwenne Lally, "The KDTC was gratified to see that our policy of openness and inclusion helped bring a large turnout of involved Democrats to the caucus and is pleased to give our full support and backing to our party's chosen candidates". Albrecht, 58, served as First Selectman in 1977 for one term. Read more about the caucus in the Hartford Courant.
