To the Editor:
In regards to Mr. Waters' recent letter, I have to wonder if he researched with Troop F, the number of accidents on Route 81. Or, has he read the weekly emergency accident/incident reports generated by our fire company? Just wondering.

Sarah Brundage

To the Editor:
Tom Water's article was right on. I congratulate him for having the time and guts to write it.

Bus Delays Causing Concern
Regional 17 Schools Superintendent Gary Mala has been working with students, bus drivers and individual school administrators to shorten the length of time it takes to get kids on their buses at the end of the day. Up to two hour delays have been reported by parents. On Wednesday, Mala said the district had "turned a corner" on the bus problems, completing all the afternoon bus runs within an "acceptable amount of time". Read more about this in today's Hartford Courant

To the Editor:
Your articles over speed limits recently are very frightening. Why is it that over the last 10 years, there are hardly any accidents in town? Maybe because we are allowed to drive as road conditions permit. Speed limits do not work. They never have and they never will. Go on the highway and you see that traffic flows at 80 not 65. As cars get better, people will drive faster. People in other countries do not have speed limits and they are safer and less stressed out driving. Read more

In an announcement introducing the party's 2007 platform, Killingworth Democrats Rick Albrecht, candidate for First Selectman, and Selectman candidates Cathy Iino and Ed Sipples emphasized their unanimous support of its principles and their shared vision for the town's future. Albrecht said, "We may have slightly different ideas about how to implement things, but we stand united in our commitment to preserve what's best in Killingworth while we take steps to ensure the future health of our community."

The platform defines three critical leadership goals for town government: a solid infrastructure, responsible management and planned growth; and outlines actionable, realistic initiatives that will help achieve them.

Killingworth Democratic Party PLATFORM 2007

A solid infrastructure
• Investigate financially and environmentally responsible ways to keep Lovers Lane open, passable and safe.
• Keep active road and bridge projects on track and on budget.
• Evaluate infrastructure and prioritize pending and new projects.
• Move Wettish athletic field construction forward.
• Address needs at Sheldon and plan for appropriate, ongoing maintenance of all town fields.
• Work with Land Trust to develop and maintain trails.

Responsible management
• Exercise fiscal controls and adhere to correct bidding procedures.
• Enforce traffic safety.
• Update organization of town staff to meet current and future needs.
• Ensure confidentiality and respect for all residents' private issues and information.
• Establish open, transparent channels of communication.

Planned growth
• Enforce current zoning regulations and act on guidelines of Plan of Conservation and Development.
• Explore housing solutions for our seniors and young people.
• Pursue land acquisition for open space and municipal development use.
• Foster desirable development that will make the least possible demands on town services, schools, infrastructure and environment.
