Help Needed Finding Lost Dog
UPDATE 10/14: I am happy to tell all of my friends and neighbors in Killingworth that Jazz has returned home safely today after 3 nights outside. She was found this morning by the Sage family on Sypher Rd in Chester. Much thanks to them for keeping her safe, feeding her and warming her up. She seems very happy to be home at last and we are so blessed to have her back. Thanks to everyone who helped!

Resident Wins Library Board Appreciation Award
by Kathleen Amoia

With a full-time staff of three librarians and two part-time assistants, KLA relies heavily on volunteers. In the midst of a vibrant volunteer program, Shelly Cumpstone has proven a dynamo of dedication and consistently outstanding performance for fifteen years.
Shelly joined the Killingworth Library Board of Directors in November of 1993 and became an integral part of the Building Fund Campaign. With a clear vision, she brought her organizational skills and the Killingworth community together. Canvassing the town with neighborhood captains, Shelly and her teams helped raise the money that brought the new library building from blueprint to reality. Richard Blythe, board president at the time, said of her efforts, "The library would eventually have been completed, but with Shelly's enthusiasm, which spilled over to the other members of the board, it was completed much more quickly." Retired Head Librarian, Ginny Chapman, said of Shelly's fundraising efforts, "When something was needed, she helped provide it. She was always there and always doing something." Read more
Land Trust Receives DEP Grant

The property, christened "River Bend", fronts over 850 feet of the Hammonasset River and has been a popular trout fishing area for many years. It is located on Chestnut Hill Road on the border of Madison. This acquisition creates a vital link in the "Blueway" the Open Space Committees of Killingworth, Madison, and Clinton have been working to protect. For more information, look for the Land Trust's newsletter due out in a couple weeks. You can also stop by the website at www.killingworthlandtrust.com.
The Trust wishes to thank all of the Town's boards, land use commissions and Trout Unlimited for their letters of support.
Blumenthal to Visit KDTC Fundraiser
The Killingworth Democratic Town Committee announced that Attorney General Richard Blumenthal will attend the Democratic Harvest Fest this afternoon! The fundraising event is being held from 3PM to 6PM at the home of Lou and Carolann Annino, 294 Route 148. According to organizers, "it's a great way to connect with a powerful arm of our State government and engage in our own town's government at the same time".
Fiscal Responsibility - A Balancing Act
I am part of the Republican team of Cabral-Dudek as a candidate for the Board of Education for Region 17. My background is primarily finance and education. I am a retired partner of the accounting firm of Ernst & Young, I taught auditing for 3 years at City University of New York and presently have a valuation consulting firm in Killingworth.
The Cabral-Dudek team believes there is a need for more fiscal responsibility in our town particularly in the areas of purchasing and maintaining open space and the task of educating our children. To help balance these priorities, Killingworth has recently raised tax revenues with a revaluation and floated interest-bearing bonds. We must evaluate these functions and closely monitor the related cost efficiencies. Read more

Town to Adjust Green Hill/ Route 81 Intersection
First Selectman Marty Klein reported on Monday that the new intersection at Green Hill Road and Route 81 needs to be adjusted to better accommodate school buses and trucks. Larger vehicles turning onto Green Hill from Route 81 currently have to cross over into the approaching lane in order to negotiate the turn causing a safety issue. Klein said he has asked Town Engineers Nathan Jacobson & Associates to look into widening the radius of the turn. He said Jacobsen "went by the book" in designing the intersection, so the Town will pay to make the adjustments.

The HK Girls Soccer team fell to North Branford, 0-2, Thursday. North Branford scored once in the first and once in the second half. Although HK out shot North Branford 22 to 14 they couldn't get one in the net. Teagan Ferguson made 7 saves for HK. The Cougar's next game is home on Saturday at 3:45 vs Portland.
The HK Boys Soccer team suffered its second loss of the season yesterday to North Branford by a score of 1-2. HK's lone goal was scored by Mike Mead. The team is now 9-2 and faces Portland on Friday at home.

To the Editor:
The lazy days of summer have some and gone and with them an opportunity to have shown our support for Marty Klein by voting for him in the Democratic town caucus. We only have complacency as an excuse and were taken by surprise when the Kleins appeared at our back door asking for our signatures so that Marty could run as an independent seeking a second term as our selectman here in Killingworth. We gave our signatures and vowed to help however we can to ensure Marty's reelection because we know that Killingworth has the right man at the helm and he should be allowed to continue the progress he's made. As Killingworth begins the 23rd month of the Klein Reign of Terror, it is a good time to look back and see what all the commotion is about.
Killingworth is blessed with a large number of people, some of whom sit in its town government, whose policy is to Do Nothing. Thus, when I took office, the Reservoir Road bridge was on the verge of failure, no progress had been made on building athletic fields, state funding (LOCIP grants) sat unused, and unsafe road intersections continued to exist. This, the result of years of neglect by prior administrations. Read more
To the Editor:
I read with great interest a recent submittal by Mr. Ray Szumilas regarding political signs in our neighborhood. It is unfortunate that anyone should feel they have been prevented from expressing their political opinions. Since my residence is referred as a property with a posting supporting First Selectman Klein, I thought it might be appropriate time to explain the presence of that sign. Read more
To the Editor:
In his letter to "Killingworth Today" posted October 10th, Ray Szumilas reported that the campaign signs he put on his property supporting Frank Cunningham and Ralph Cabral in the upcoming elections were by the next day --- gone. He further states that he suspected that Mary Klein and/or his supporters were responsible for the dastardly deed. Mr. Szumilas may be surprised to learn that the Marty Klein campaign signs I put on my property on Reservoir Road were also taken as well as similar signs located on the property across the road from us. One can only conclude from this that there individuals from both sides of the aisle who are guilty of trespass and unfair politicking. Or could it be some youths idea of fun. I will not go on here to bash Mr. Cunningham and Mr. Cabral as Mr. Szumilas felt he had to do in his disparaging remarks concerning Marty Klein. My vote speaks volumes. Like many small towns, Killingworth is facing economic, social and environmental impact of rampant development. This is the time for bipartisan cooperation for the benefit of our town and not irresponsible, divisive remarks.

Governor Rell Orders Flags to Half Staff to Honor Fallen SoldierGovernor M. Jodi Rell has ordered U.S. and state flags lowered to half staff in honor of Sgt. Jason Lantieri of Killingworth, who was killed October 9th in Iraq.
The 25-year-old Lantieri, a soldier in the Army's 25th Infantry Division, died during operations in Baghdad.
"This is a tremendous loss, and I ask that we unite as a state to honor the sacrifice that Sgt. Lantieri has made on our behalf," Governor Rell said. "Our most sincere condolences go out to Sgt. Lantieri's family and friends. We can all continue to honor Sgt. Lantieri's service by keeping in our thoughts and prayers the men and women now risking their lives overseas to serve our nation."
At the Governor's direction, flags will remain at half staff until Sgt. Lantieri has been interred. Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized.
NBC30.com is reporting that Lantieri died accidentally in Iraq after he was pinned between vehicles that were being moved. According to Kathleen Miller, Lantieri joined the Army two years ago and was due home in December. Miller said the family has tentative plans to hold a memorial service at Haddam-Killingworth High School. A date has not been set.
WTNH.com talked with Miller about her family's loss and about how Lantieri came to join her family as a foster child when he was 11 years old.

Cranberry Harvest Set for this Saturday
The Killingworth Land Trust would like to remind everyone that the annual Cranberry Harvest will take this Saturday,October 13, from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM. There are plenty of berries for everyone to bring home a bag full (approximately 1 pound). The cranberry bog is located on Pond Meadow Road. The 2006 Harvest was wonderful, with 200 people stopping by throughout the morning and early afternoon, with the weather cooperating nicely. The sun should be shining come Saturday, but please check back here at KillingworthToday for news of a postponement (rain date is Sunday, the 14th).
Please come and join in the fun, and learn more about this unique natural area and what the land trust is doing to keep it healthy. While there are trails on many land trust properties, the cranberry bog is only open to the public just this once every year. Don't miss out!
We look forward to seeing you and the family on Saturday.

Has Marty Klein appointed himself "Sole Selectman" of Killingworth? I thought he was First Selectman, a member of the board of three elected Selectmen. In our town, the First Selectman requires approval of at least one other selectman to establish changes and make orders.
As I drove around town today, I noticed that each stop sign on a town road has "Per Order of Selectmen" clearly printed at the bottom. "Selectmen" is a plural word, indicating that one selectman may not make the decision. Yet, there is a stop sign that Marty Klein ordered without any other Selectman's approval.

Killingworth is fortunate to have Sean Sullivan running for Congress from our district. Sean Sullivan is a retired Navy Captain who was the Sub base commanding officer with a long history in submarines. He will bring to congress an intelligent, clear unencumbered view to the problems facing our country.
Congress, in my view, does not have enough people who have worn the uniform to make informed discussions involving the security of our country which is why I am voting for Sean Sullivan.

On Saturday, September 29th I went to the town dump. There I met Frank Cunningham and Rich Cabral. We had a short conversation and I expressed my support for them in the upcoming election. At that point they offered me signs to put on my property to show my support. I accepted them and brought them home.
That night I put them up on the front of my property. I live across the street from where First Selectman Martin Klein held his campaign picnic. I had to go to work on that Sunday. When I got home that night the signs were gone. Read more

I have been amazed at the rhetoric of Selectman Sipples with his postulation of his leadership because he has served so many years on the Recreation Board. While his tenure is to be commended, leadership is just not attending meetings but having a vision, proposing programs and projects, etc. The eight years I served on either the Board of Selectmen or as First Selectman, I can not recall anything Mr. Sipples actually proposed or followed through on. Bragging is o.k. but actually doing something as its member or chairman is LEADERSHIP. Mr. Sipples has been a real disapointment as Selectman. Read more

When I first learned of the Internet site - killingworthtoday.com - last week I searched for all reports and references to the Lover's Lane situation. I was amazed that none of the old timers that are still in Killingworth had reported that there was a bridge at what is now the problem site. In 1950 there were only about 600 residents in Killingworth. The bridge had a heavy wooden deck, and the cut was approximately Fifteen feet long by the width of the road and about Eight Feet Deep. It was deep on both sides of the cut and the abutments that the heavy wood carrying beams rested on were of quarried brownstone or other rock and they were embedded all the way down to bedrock or gravel (NOT peat bog)). It had to be because common sense dictates that the bridge would not last a year if the abutments were placed on peat moss. Read more

Marty Klein does not like to be questioned on his authority. Here is one example. Many residents of Blueberry Hill, Colonial Drive and Reservoir Road have posed many questions to Marty and the reaction was great distaste for the residents. We have compared our conversations with Marty over the course of 18 months since he closed the Reservoir Road bridge. We started by simply asking why and when it would be reopened. We even asked how we could help. We asked to see the state mandated bridge closure paperwork. Those who have received calls back have been yelled at and called a generation of selfish spoiled brats. Community Theatre Production Supports Youth & Family
This summer, the auditorium at the new Haddam-Killingworth Middle School came alive for the first time with a full-scale community musical, Oliver! The producer, Artful Living decided to use the production to benefit a local organization. Based on the proceeds, Producer and Director Christopher Solimene was able to donate $1000 to Youth & Family Services of Haddam-Killingworth, Inc. a private, non-profit Youth Service Bureau serving the towns of Haddam and Killingworth.
The talented cast, crew, and professional orchestra come from several surrounding communities including Killingworth, Clinton, Waterford, Farmington, Southington, Deep River, and more.

In response to Charles Morgan's letter on the conversation he had with Rich Cabral: He wrote that the desire to maintain the rural character of our town is in conflict with its growing nature. I respectfully disagree (and I do respect the opinion of both Charles and Richard). While we do need to concentrate on economic growth, it need not be done at the expense of protecting open space. We are a society of multi-taskers and well able to do both. Read more

Much has been said about Marty's "getting things done" and his "meticulous" attention to detail. I have first hand and very personal knowledge of how Mr. Klein deals with requests for details. He doesn't supply them. He is often impulsive and anyone who has dealt with him about town business will tell you he can't stand details. Read more

I was one of those kids who placed homemade Holy water on my window sill on Halloween night. For years I was quite certain there was an elderly ghost occupying a rocking chair in the corner of my room. Terrorized and mesmerized by movies like "The Exorcist", "The Shining" and "Amityville Horror", not to mention anything written by Anne Rice, paranormal activity and tales of the spirit world fascinated me. I don't put holy water on the window sill anymore, but these stories continue to tweak my interest.
