HK Sports: The HK High School Boys Soccer team won the Shoreline Championship title for the second year in a row, Friday evening by beating Cromwell, 4-3. The high scoring game was very exciting with end to end action. HK's Matt Waldman scored the first goal very early in the game off a Liam Isleib corner kick. Cromwell scored two goals later in the half and Isleib tied the game off a Ryan Conway assist just before the break. Isleib blasted in another goal early in the second half followed by what would be the game winner by Dan Wendt. Cromwell countered and scored with 10 minutes left in the game. The HK defense and goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone held off the attacks to close out the game for the win and Shoreline trophy.

To the Editor:
As Election Day approaches, I want to remind Killingworth voters of a few relevant facts.

Two years ago, the two candidates for 1st Selectman were John Amport and Marty Klein. It was a very close race. You now have the opportunity to have both of us serve on your Board of Selectmen. In the last election, each of us was endorsed by a wide range of your friends and neighbors. Read more
To the Editor:
As Chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA), I want to urge you to vote for Charlie Martens to continue to serve as a Member of the ZBA.

I asked Charlie to fill a vacancy on the ZBA after he stepped down as Chairman of the Planning & Zoning Commission, following decades of dedicated service to our town. His intimate knowledge of our zoning regulations is a very significant asset to the ZBA, and I'm sure the other members agree that it is important to have him continue to help us through what are often complex and difficult decisions.

It may seem unusual for a life long Republican to so strongly endorse a life long Democrat, but in our small town, I believe party politics should be second to electing the best candidate.

Please join me in voting for Charlie Martens on November 6th .

District Van in Minor Accident
According to the Hartford Courant, a Region 17 school van was involved in a motor vehicle accident with two other vehicles on Route 81 Wednesday afternoon.

There were no students on the van, but minor injuries were reported to some of the operators involved in the crash that happened about 3:20 p.m. Those injured were taken by ambulance to Middlesex Hospital in Middletown for treatment.

UPDATE: Adametz has been informed that due to mechanical problems, the paving will not start today, but will commence tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. and continue on Monday beginning at 7:00 a.m.

Acting Highway Foreman Water Adametz is notifying residents that paving will take place on Green Hill Road Today, Nov. 1 and Friday, Nov. 2. Detours will be in place, but residents should plan for delays. The project is weather permitting.

The paving will be done in two sections starting at approximately 10:00 a.m. Thursday. Adametz said residents' morning commute will not be affected. The first section will be on Green Hill Road between Stevens and Chittenden Road. Traffic coming from Madison will be detoured onto Chittenden. Traffic traveling south from Route 81 will have a one lane of access on Green Hill Road.

Following work on section one, Green Hill between Coughlin Road and Cow Pen Hill will be closed except to local traffic. Westbound traffic will be detoured onto Coughlin to Fawn Hill Road and then onto Cow Pen Hill. Eastbound traffic will be detoured onto Cow Pen Hill to Fawn Hill to Coughlin.

Adametz said there is a leveling phase done first and then top coating to finish, so the project is expected to take the full two days.

HK Sports: The HK Boys Soccer team will defend its Shoreline Conference title on Friday afternoon after beating North Branford in the semifinals yesterday. The first half ended 0-0 but HK came out strong in the second half and scored two goals in the first two minutes of the half. The final score was 4-1 with all four goals scored by Junior Matt Waldman. The Championship match will be played at 5:00 p.m. Friday at Portland High School against Cromwell HS.

The HK Girls Soccer team fell to North Branford, 0-1, in its Shoreline Tournament Conference game on Halloween night. HK and North Branford had 14 shots on goal and 8 saves were made by both goal keepers. North Branford was just able to find the net in the first five minutes of the game.

To the Editor:
I am extremely interested in education for Haddam and Killingworth and attended the Board of Education candidates night, October 30th, to hear the opinions, direction and ideas that the candidates have for Killingworth. Imagine my surprise when the only candidate there was John O'Leary. Haddam had 5 people present for 6 openings and we in Killingworth had one person for five openings. We all understand previous commitments, however I was disappointed by the turnout and a little embarrassed for our town. Read more
To the Editor:
When I think of the present leadership of Killingworth's Republicans, my thoughts go back to the election of 2006 and how this group made national news by being the first Republican Town Committee in CT. to abandon their US Senate candidate in favor of Joe (bomb Iran) Lieberman. I'm also reminded of their present Chairman stating that he left the Democratic Party in the 90's because of Bill Clinton's misbehavior, but can stay a Republican with W's behavior. Read more
To the Editor:
Since 1995, I have been driving 100 miles a night picking up papers for early morning delivery down Killingworth's paved roads and country lanes. Over the years, I've learned the pattern. At the same place and time I see the Dunkin Donuts truck heading south on Rt. 81. The Advance Auto Parts van is heading to Clinton. The Unilever truck is heading north. Between 4:00 and 5:00 am, many folks are beginning their workday commute. Read more

MY RUNNING MATE
Even though I am a candidate for First Selectman, I write to you today in support of my running mate Fred Dudek.

Fred and I have had many conversations even prior to becoming running mates. I have found him to be a man of impeccable character and untouchable integrity. He has always held Killingworth and its future dear to his heart. This was quite evident during one particular conversation we had some 2 years ago at the Fire Department's Auction. We discussed such items as rising costs (taxes), open space, aging infrastructure, and, in general, sustaining a quality of life. All of which are so important to me as a resident of Killingworth.

It will be a great honor to serve with Fred on a Team that will keep the citizens and their welfare ever in mind. Please join me in supporting Fred Dudek for Selectman by voting for him on November 6.

For those of you who have wondered why the traffic circle garden looks a bit sparse? The answer is that in early October the Evergreen Garden Club members removed many of the perennials from the garden in anticipation of an early spring start date of the State's reconfiguration of the traffic circle. Our liaison with the DOT has confirmed that the planned demolition of the present garden is slated for early April. The plants were moved this fall because many of them will not be up in the Spring when the demolition will take place. A number of plants were moved over to the State Trooper's Residence to make a new garden there on the north side of the building. After the State finishes the reconfiguration of the circle, they will be planting a new garden that the garden club will maintain. There's more!

These columns as well as meeting and event reminders are available from the Garden Club's web page at www.Killingworthtoday.com/EGC

Despite heavy downpours and standing water on the field, the Haddam-Killingworth Football team was still able to put together a dominating, 36-0, victory over conference foe Vinal/Coginchaug.

HK scored first soon after a bad V/C snap on a punt gave the Cougars possession on the 7-yard line. From there, Jarrod Ramsey pounded his way into the endzone on the next play. Ramsey also ran in the two point conversion, giving HK an 8-0 lead.

The Cougar defense continued to stuff drive after drive throughout the first half keeping V/C off the scoreboard. With just over three minutes remaining, Ted Kanaras intercepted a pass and gave the Cougars possession for one final drive of the half. The Cougar offense sloshed its way down to the 18-yard line through the mud, setting up the final play with the clock still running and no timeouts. HK just got the snap off with 3 seconds remaining, and Alex Pollack connected with Tyler Wilcox in the endzone as time expired, giving HK a 14-0 halftime lead.

Not satisfied with their first half, HK came out with some fire in the second. After Stephan Polumbo forced a fumble to give HK the ball, the Cougars again pounded their way down field to the Vinal/Coginchaug 8-yard line. That is when Pollack rolled to his left and decide to keep it himself, running into the endzone untouched for a touchdown. A Sal Zichichi two-point conversion made it 22-0 in favor of the home team.

Pollack's touchdown seemed to break V/C's spirit and from there it was all Cougars with Jarrod Ramsey breaking loose for a 46-yard touchdown run putting HK up 28-0, and Sal Zichichi capping things off with a 38 yard touchdown run of his own. Ramsey ran the conversion on the latter score making the final 36-0.

The Cougars move to 5-1 (2-1) on the season. Next up for the Cougars will be homecoming versus Morgan on Saturday, November 3. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m

The HK Field Hockey team deafeated North Branford on Monday night, 2-1. Kellie Moskey and Leslie Zules scored in the first half for the Cougars. Shelby Van Huysen had 4 saves in goal. HK is now 11-3 on the year.

KWO Clarifies Debate Issue
The Killingworth Women's Organization has released a statement regarding the recently cancelled First Selectman's Debate originally schedule for Tuesday, Oct. 30. Joan Reed Wilson said, "On behalf of the Killingworth Women's Organization, I feel it is necessary to correct Mr. Amport's statement regarding the reason for the cancellation of the KWO-sponsored debate. There will be no debate because the only date that worked for all of the candidates conflicted with the H-K Educators' Association's forum for the Board of Education candidates."

Candidates for the Board of Selectmen have responded to your questions in the Final Round of the Election 2007 Online Debate.

Question 1: Given the many ways the town interacts and intersects with the regional school district, what will you do to improve and expand that relationship?

Question 2: What will you do to encourage more residents to step forward to volunteer for town committees?

Click here to read the candidates' responses posted on the Online Debate Webpage. Short rebuttals will be accepted from the candidates. They will be posted below the initial response.

You may comment on the candidate's answer by clicking on the comment link under the response. Comments will be moderated and inappropriate or irrelevant comments will be removed.

Thanks to the candidates for participating in this debate. Remember to get out and VOTE on Tuesday, November 6, 2007

To the Editor:
Long range planning is not just an intelligent choice, it is a no-brainer. That is why the Killingworth Democratic Party built long range planning into their past and current platforms. It is also why they have chosen BOS candidates with years of experience in town, two of whom have served on the Board of Finance. Read more
To the Editor:
This season's political landscape offers the wise voter a chance to cherry-pick the candidates who will best serve the community without regard to political affiliation. Independence has its prerogatives, and loyalty is honorable. But neither can be effective when blinded by hubris. That's why a case can be made to select two candidates who appear natural opponents by label, but are, I believe, bound by the common drive to serve the best interests of the Killingworth community: Ed Sipples for Selectman and Rich Cabral for First Selectman. To the Editor:
Another election season is nearing completion. Everyone has ideas. Some are judged good, some are judged not so good.

The bottom line......every candidate is in the race because they believe they have something to offer to the Town of Killingworth. In the end, it is up to you, the voters, to decide the election outcome. Read more
To the Editor:
This is to endorse Ed Sipples re-election bid for Selectman in Killingworth.

Ed Sipples has been involved in town government for many years, the past two as Selectman. His knowledge of Killingworth, the Town Charter and issues facing this town are important to all of the residents here.

I urge you to vote to elect Ed Sipples, the Democratic Party's endorsed Candidate, for Selectman on November 6, 2007.

Reg. 17 Announces Superintendent's Award Recipients
The administration of the Regional School District 17 schools is pleased to announce the 2007-2008 recipients of the MSSA Superintendent's Awards. These awards, established approximately ten years ago by the Middlesex Shoreline Superintendents' Association, are awarded on an annual basis to students who exhibit exceptional character, strong academic achievements and a commitment to community service to his/her school and community at large.

The following are summaries of this years recipients from Haddam-Killingworth High School.

Celia Marcum, Class of 2009
Vivacious, active, and bright are three of the first words that come to mind when one thinks of Celia Marcum. Academically, Celia has taken primarily Honors level courses with two AP's: Biology and US History. Teachers find Celia to be responsible, receptive, and actively involved in their classes.

Marcum is currently a Varsity Diver and Lacrosse player. Prior to her time as an H-K athlete Marcum had been heavily involved in gymnastics for ten years and had competed her way to a select group of competitive Level 9 gymnasts. Her dedication and time management that she learned at a young age as a gymnast has clearly been passed down throughout her other co-curricular activities. She is also a member of Future Leaders of Haddam-Killingworth (FLOHK), Human Relations Club, Student Council, and President of the Class of 2009. Last summer Celia also spent time as a volunteer camp counselor at Platt Nature Center where she worked with young children.

Bryan Mucke, Class of 2008
Bryan Mucke is an outstanding student and an all-around exceptional human being. Mucke's transcript illustrates his success in the very demanding course load with which he challenged himself. Included with his 19 honors courses, are two AP classes. Mucke's work ethic and determination has earned him a place in the top ten percent (fifth male) of the graduating class. Bryan also tailored some of his class selection around his desire to pursue medicine, or bio-medical programs at the collegiate level.

Mucke not only excels in the classroom, but he is a four year member of the golf team and two-year member of the football team. Bryan is an active participant in Student's Against Drunk Driving, Geo caching Club (Co-Founder), National Spanish Honor Society, National Honor Society, Future Leaders of H-K, and International Culture Club (current President). Bryan's desire to help others is evident in his dedication to the Essex fire department, with which he is a volunteer Medical Responding Technician (MRT). Bryan recently completed a 40-hour course and received state certification for this role.

Tri-Town Football Update
Due to the conditions of the HK field, Tri-town Seniors will play their playoff game today at Guilford High School at 11:00 a.m.

HK Sports: The HK Boys Cross Country team won the 2007 Class SS State Championship held yesterday at Wickham Park in Manchester. The win marked the first Boys Cross Country State Championship in 24 years - since 1983. The boys team scored 59 points, beating East Catholic 2nd (97 pts.) and Stonington 3rd (109 pts.).

Coach Matt Diglio said, entering the meet knowing it was going to be a tight race with several other teams from throughout the state, the boys realized it was going to take another total team effort to win the Class SS title. What the team could not predict however, was the condition of the course as heavy rain the previous night and throughout the day left the course in tough condition being muddy and water-logged. Led once again by senior Mike Waterbury, the boys overcame the tough course conditions and the competition to come away with the victory. Waterbury had an great race placing 2nd and earning All-State honors. Sophomore Jason Funaro, who was sick all week, ran a gutsy race to place 6th in just his first X-C season ever to also earn All-State honors. Rounding out the scoring for the HK boys team was Kevin Allison (14th) who stepped up and had an outstanding race, Connor Walsh (16th) and senior co-captain Paul Massicott (21st). Also helping the Cougars secure the team title were sophomores Brandon Page who placed 28th and Dan Hollenbeck who placed 32 in just his first state championship meet. By winning the State SS Championship, the boys qualified for the State Open Championships to be held on Friday afternoon at Wickham Park, Manchester.

The HK Girls Cross Country team bounced back after a disappointing finish at the Shoreline Championship Meet last week with an outstanding race at the Girls Class SS State Championship Meet. Also running in difficult weather and course conditions, the girls placed 8th out of 22 teams led once again by sophomore Clair Helenek who placed 27th. The next three HK finishers (all sophomores) raced as a pack and had an terrific day, led by Melissa Buckley (41st), Kara Burdett (42nd) and Sarah Tishbein (49th). Rounding out the scoring was senior Mary Dornfeld who placed 90th. Also running tremendous races for the girls were senior captain Edie Hanson who placed 101st in the final cross-country race of her high school career and Carli Albrecht who placed 119th.

The HK Girl's Soccer team celebrated Senior Night prior to their final regular season game vs Coginchaug. The Cougars defeated Coginchaug, 3-1. The Congregational Church Lyman Pie Sale will end in less than a week and they are in need of more pie orders for Helping Hands. Please consider donating a pie for a needy family in town. Helping Hands is counting on 35 pies for Thanksgiving, and as of now they have less than 10 orders. The pies are $11.00 each, and checks can be mailed to the church office at 273 Route 81, Killingworth, Connecticut 06419; checks can be made out to the Congregational Church in Killingworth. Last year they were in a similar situation with pie orders, and the congregation really came through with fulfilling the 35 pie orders, which was wonderful. Let's do it again this year!

We have approved in that period of time more applications than any other time since the approval of the Pharmedica complex. We just approved a new Killingworth True Value that will be assessed in the millions of dollars, with three buildings, the largest of which is 16,000 square feet. Read more
To the Editor:
I whole heartedly endorse Martin Klein's re-election bid for First Selectman of Killingworth.

When my family moved to Killingworth from North Carolina, in l995, I was nine years old; just entering the 4th grade. My parents, and the Klein's, served on the Democratic Town Committee together. I saw Mr. Klein frequently at our home and at local functions, and he impressed me, even then, as an impassioned person; someone committed to making changes for the better. Read more
