The Cougars got on the board first when a Valley long snap sailed over the head of their punter and through the endzone; 2-0 HK.
Both teams traded stalled drives after the safety. However when Valley punted, the Cougars muffed the fair catch and Warriors pounced on the loose ball giving them great field position. From there the Warriors used a long run and a 9-yard TD run to take a 6-2 lead. They converted the 2 point try to make it an 8-2 lead.
That lead was short lived as Sal Zichichi took the ensuing kickoff and darted his way 85 yards for a touchdown. Rosendo Mendoza's extra point was good, giving HK a 9-8 lead. Neither team would be able to muster any more offense before the half ended.
The second half opened with HK taking the first possession and driving the field to the Valley 14-yard line. From there Jarrod Ramsey plowed over and through Valley defenders for a 14-yard touchdown run. The conversion was no good, but HK had a little more breathing room; 15-8.
In the fourth quarter, Valley made things interesting when they faked a punt and connected on a pass all the way to the HK 25-yard line. The Warriors botched the snap on the next play and gavre the ball back to the Cougars who put together a 75-yard touchdown drive that ended with Alex Pollack passing to Eric Auer for a 10-yard score. Mendoza added the extra point to make it 22-8.
Valley attempted to put together one last ditch effort to get back in the game, only to have Greg Zak step in front of a deep pass and return it deep in to Valley territory. That play essentially ended the game.
For HK Jarrod Ramsey led the way with 130 yards on 21 carries to go with his touchdown. Zichichi totaled up 116 all purpose yards, and Auer led the defense with 10 total tackles. HK ends the season at 8-2 (5-2).

Supreme Court Denies CRRA Stay on RefundThe attorney representing the Town of Killingworth and 69 other towns in the successful suit against the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority informed the Town last week that Superior Court Judge Dennis G. Eveleigh has denied the CRRA's efforts to stay, pending appeal, distribution of the $35.9 million refund to Mid-Conn Project municipalities.
Attorney David Golub said if the motion put before the judge to approve distribution is approved, the Town's share would be approximately $82,608. The proposed allocation is based on the actual tonnage delivered annually to CRRA by each municipality. Judge Eveleigh has scheduled a hearing on the motion for Order of Distribution for November 30.
Golub cautioned that although the judge has not stayed the distribution of the $35.9 million, the appeal of the June 2007 decision is still pending. It is possible that CRRA may win its appeal (in whole, or part)and under such circumstance would be entitled to recover the amount distributed to the Town.

Fields Estimate Grows to $1.68 MillionDan Colonia, Chairman of the Park and Rec Commission updated the Board of Selectmen last week on the design and cost estimate for the fields project on the Wettish property on Park Hill Road Ext. Colonia also requested approximately $38,000 for task two of the Weston & Sampson preliminary engineering plan. This phase will produce a final design and construction documents. The preliminary design estimates have come back at $1.679 million for the plan that includes two full-size multi-purpose fields, three smaller fields and a parking lot for 160 vehicles.
The $500,000 STEAP grant received for the project requires planners to abide by strict guidelines on labor and construction. The grant cannot be touched until a plan for the fields has been approved at a Town Meeting. If approved, the Park and Rec Commission can apply for an additional STEAP grant. So the commission may have to come before the town asking for over $1 million in additional funds with the possibility of another grant.
Selectman Ed Sipples suggested cutting one small field from the plan and possibly the plan for irrigation. He said the Town was initially told the estimate for the project was $750,000. He said he would like to see the plan get closer to the original estimate. Selectman Fred Dudek said he wanted to have the Board of Finance outline what options the Town has to pay for the fields. PRC member Chris Kelly said the fields would be ruined in one year if there was no irrigation. Colonia said in order to cut a field, the STEAP grant would have to be amended.
Colonia said a date for the Town meeting has not been set. As the design is refined, he hopes to be able to cut some additional costs without sacrificing fields or other essential elements. As an example, he said moving the parking lot to the front of the fields saved $1 million. There is also the possibility of using volunteers for some of the tasks. Colonia said if the fields are started next year, they could be in use by 2009.

Things started out rough for the Cougars as the Rams took the opening kickoff and returned it all the way to the one yard line. OSW punched it in soon after for a 7-0 lead.
HK answered back early in the second quarter as Jarrod Ramsey plowed through OSW defenders en route to the endzone on his 55-yard touchdown run. The extra point was missed, making it 7-6.
The Rams went into halftime with the lead after driving 64 yards with under three minutes remaining in the half. They would also miss the extra point, but still held a 13-6 lead.
HK regrouped at halftime and settled down for the second half. The results were almost immediate as they drove the field on their first possession, the end result being a three-yard touchdown run from Ramsey, who also ran in the two-point conversion for a, 14-13, lead. The HK defense held the OSW offense in check the rest of the way, and mid way through the fourth quarter the Cougars would put the game away.
Clinging to the one point lead and facing a third down from the Ram 35 yard line, Alex Pollack completed a 27-yard pass to Russ Spaeth to set up Ramsey's eight yard touchdown run. Sal Zichichi ran in the conversion to make it 22-13.
For HK, Ramsey carried the ball 24 times for 129 yards to go with his three touchdown day. Dave Bartolotta also reeled off a bunch of big runs during his 16 carry, 108 yard performance. HK will now play their final game of the season against long time rival Valley. The game is Thanksgiving morning, at home, with kickoff set for 10:30.
