Saturday, December 22, 2007![]() The Central Connecticut Aquatics Team (CCAT) co-sponsored the 12th Annual Swim For Hunger Invitational at Wesleyan University on December 14-16. The goal for this meet was to involve USA swimmers in the collection of food and hygiene items to help those in need. Food and Hygiene items were donated by the swimmers, collected by the CCAT swim team, and distributed to various food banks in Middlesex Counties. In previous years, the team has raised approximately 2000 pounds of non-perishable food and hygiene items for local shelters. CCAT is a USA swimming club practicing at the Choate pool in Wallingford, Conn.
![]() Photo courtesy L. Wargo Friday, December 21, 2007At the Special Town Meeting last night, residents voted against discontinuing a portion of Jay Dowd Road and all of Tibbals Bridge Road, including the small bridge. The Board of Selectmen and Planning and Zoning Commission recommended the discontinuance, but residents turned out in force to oppose the move.
The portion of Jay Dowd Road considered in the motion runs through land owned by the Hammonassett Fishing Association. The proposal was to discontinue 750 feet heading north on Jay Dowd toward Route 148 and 4,200 feet south to the HFA boundary line. The HFA, a hunting, fishing and shooting club, owns approximately 3,000 acres in Madison and Killingworth including the land on both sides of Jay Dowd and Tibbals Bridge Roads. HFA, which has a similar motion pending in Madison, offered to pay for the removal of Tibbals Bridge which HFA attorney Tom Cronin said was in "significant disrepair". The lower portion of Jay Dowd that connects with County Road remains an active Town road. Vice President of the Land Conservation Trust, Sue Davenport asked, "why are we giving anything up?" She said many groups and organizations in Town are trying to open trails and preserve greenways. Gwenne Lally echoed the sentiment and said we should be opening up unimpeded access to wildlife. Land Trust President John Himmelman said the concept needs more study and urged residents to oppose the resolution. Land Trust member Bruce Dodson said he visited the site on Monday with Town officials and also urged residents to vote against the resolution in order to have more time to look into alternatives. The road portions referred to in the motion have been gated at both ends by the HFA to impede travel. Cronin said the gates were put up because HFA considers the roads abandoned. Cronin said the Town has the obligation to maintain its roads and discontinuing the road would remove the town from liability. Following the meeting, he said he would discuss the project with Town committees, but said an alternative was to have the courts officially declare the roads abandoned. ![]() Stars of the night were freshman Nick Adler who pinned in both matches to start the grapplers on their way. We will make the info available as soon as we can as to the date, time and cost. Our membership has grown from a low of 2 members to the present 11. Anyone ages 14 to 18 is able to join our group. You can contact any member or Senior member of the Fire Co for info if interested in joining. It is a very rewarding experience and it helps our community. Thank You again for your support. On behalf of Helping Hands and the Killingworth Women's Organization (KWO), we would like to thank all who participated to help make the Greg Bousquet Wish Fulfillment Drive a huge success this year. We collected about 60 gift cards and over 95 gifts to be distributed to the children and senior citizens in Killingworth, who needed some assistance this holiday season. Many thanks to Jackie Bousquet and the St. Lawrence church for posting and collecting list items, to Lee Kozlowski and Mary Anne Lisk from KES for their support, and to the KES staff who donated their dress down collections to the Drive. This Drive could not have succeeded without the help and support of the many caring people in our town! It is during this very season that each person makes a sincere effort to extend good wishes to everyone. These very good wishes create collective warmth in all of us and, thus, make it a time to be enjoyed by all. My personal wish is that this collective warmth be felt by all in Killingworth throughout the entire New Year. We, here at Town Hall, would like to take this opportunity to extend our warm and heart felt wishes to you and your families for a most joyous Holiday Season. Richard J. Cabral First Selectman To the Editor:
Since the election of Killingworth's new administration, it is apparent that change is already in progress. This first sign of this change, for me, is the fact that Lovers Lane is still open well into December. It appears that the new administration sees the value and convenience that this thoroughfare provides the taxpayers of Killingworth, as well as all others who frequent our lovely town. For me, Lovers Lane is a very convenient way for me to access Schnoor and Bethke Road, as well as route 81. Hopefully, we will see improvements made to Lovers Lane in the future. There have been numerous posts in previous editions of Killingworth Today in which improvements could feasibly be made with very little intrusion, if any, to the surrounding wetlands. I encourage others who feel strongly about this topic to offer your insights and suggestions so that all can benefit from the continued and safe use of this town road. Sincerely, Bob Bavolacco Haddam-Killingworth Middle School held its Holiday Choral Concert last night. Under the direction of "Super Sub" Chris Solimene and accompanied by pianist Joel Spineti, the sixth and seventh grade choirs got their chance to shine. With beautiful harmonies and talented soloists, the choir's selections included "The Rainbow Connection", "Part of Your World", "Any Dream Will Do", "A Charlie Brown Christmas", "Happy Hanukkah, My Friend" and "The Innkeeper's Carol". The performance concluded with a wonderful rendition of "My Favorite Things" by Rodgers and Hammerstein.
