HK Sports: Wednesday evening the H-K mat men hosted the Wreckers of Staples in the inaugural match in the new middle school gym. In their first home match at the middle school the Cougars stunned the Wreckers 52-29.

Staples set the tone early by jumping out to a 17 point lead by capturing the first three matches of the evening. The Cougars responded by winning the core of the evening's matches, sealing the deal in the final two bouts.

The evening had an air of sentimentality by recognizing the six seniors in their last home match. Darcey Hughes, Cody Scovel, Matt Plum, Korey Johnson, Alex Mathies and CJ Jacabucci were met by their parents at center mat before the evening's contest started. Head coach Geoff Korper thanked the parents and praised the wrestlers for their accomplishments during their time with the program.

The team is preparing for the state tournament over the next two weeks and is confident about their performances as an improvement from last years finish.

The results of the middle school state open swim meet are in, and HKMS finished 5th overall of 18 teams with the girls finishing 3rd and the boys, 8th. The Cougars represented their school admirably with 22 personal best times being swum.

Michelle Wendt, Gaby Orlando, and Julianne Conway.
Among the top performers for HK were Anna Fetteroll who finished 4th in both the 50 breastroke and 50 freestyle; Michelle Wendt swam a personal best to get a medal for the 50 free; Celine Coleman swam a personal best in the 50 backstroke and finished 2nd and also got 4th in the 100 IM; Kathleen Darling, Emmery Bates, Gaby Orlando, and Michelle Wendt got 4th in the 200 freestyle relay. 7th grader Brennan Marczewski had an outstanding meet by finishing 8th in the breastroke, 7th in the 100 free, and 3rd in the 200 medley relay. 5th grader Jake Gibbons was the highest finishing 5th grader in the entire meet by getting 9th in the 50 backstroke. Stuart Stritzel swam a lifetime best in the 100 free to capture 8th place. Divers Mike Wasilchuk and Tim Lafleur finished 8th and 12th respectively in that event, while 8th grade diver Kathleen Darling finished 9th in girls' diving. 7th grader Neal Tyson finished 10th in the 50 breastroke with a personal best of 39.44. Ana Tarbetsky, Zack O'Bymachow, Tess Grimaldi, Emmery Bates, Gaby Orlando, R.J. Moore, and Sarah Massicott were the other Cougars with personal best times in the meet.

The HKMS continued its win streak by handily defeating Hamden Hall Wednesday, 82-64. Once again Anna Fetteroll and Celine Coleman had outstanding meets with both getting a 1st and a 2nd in their events. Anna swam a very impressive personal best in the 50 free with a time of 27.43 to win that event. The freestyle relay team of Neal Tyson, Brennan Marczweski, Stuart Stritzel, and Anna Fetteroll combined to win that event. Later in the meet, those same 4 swimmers combined with Celine Coleman, Jake Gibbons, Emily Meredith, and R.J. Moore to win the 8 by 50 free relay. Brennan Marczweski, Neal Tyson, and Zack O'Bymachow swept the 50 breastroke with a 1-2-3 finish. 7th grader Mike Wasilchuk won diving. 5th grader Jake Gibbons swam a lifetime personal best of 1:08.65 in the 100 free, while Gaby Orlando also swam a personal best in the 50 free. The Tuesday Book Discussion Group
The Tuesday Book Discussion Group will meet on February 12 to discuss Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer winning novel, "The Road". It is a modern tale of the heroic journey, this time of father and young son. As they travel across a devastated landscape, searching for food and avoiding lawless bandits, the father struggles to keep the boy's sense of goodness and hope alive. The catastrophe that has devastated the planet is unnamed, a cautionary tale in itself.

The discussion will begin at 1:00 in the library meeting room and newcomers are always welcome.

February 1st is National Wear Red Day!
Everyone can support the fight against heart disease in women by wearing red on National Wear Red Day, Friday, February 1, 2008. It's a simple, powerful way to raise awareness of heart disease and stroke. Visit the American Heart Association website at www.goredforwomen.org

At Monday's Board of Selectmen meeting First Selectman Richard Cabral proclaimed that Friday be "Wear Read for Women Day" and urged all citizens to wear red in recognition of family, friends and neighbors who have suffered from heart disease, and as a show of support to fight it. By increasing awareness of the risk factors for this devastating disease and taking actions to reduce them, we can save thousands of lives each year.

Traffic Circle Work to Begin
The Department of Transportation announced that the project involving the upgrade of an Existing Roundabout at Routes 80 and 81, in the Town of Killingworth, is expected to begin this month (January 2008). One lane of traffic, in alternating directions, will be maintained at all times during periods of active construction.

Hammonasset Construction, LLC of Clinton, Connecticut, is performing the work on this $1.15 million project under contract with the Department of Transportation. The majority of the work is scheduled for completion by the fall of 2008.

LET COOLER HEADS PREVAIL
As we move through the doldrums of winter, each person has thoughts of the spring weather that lies ahead. Thoughts of singing birds, blooming vegetation, warmer weather, and walks through the beautiful countryside of Killingworth, I'm sure, are in all of our minds.

The many trails offered throughout our town as provided by our ever efficient Trails Committee of the Land Trust Association afford each resident an ample amount of available hiking.

After meeting the good people of the Jay Dowd/Tibbals Bridge area, it is evident that they would like this road to be among the areas available for hiking. At the present, there seems to be some misunderstanding on the part of parties concerned as to the status of Jay Dowd Road. To this end and in an effort to clarify any misunderstanding, the B.O.S. will be discussing the status of Jay Dowd Road and Tibbals Bridge Road at its regular meeting on Monday, March 10, 2008, at 7pm at the Town Hall. There will be an updated presentation from the Town attorney and the attorney for the Hammonassett Fishing Association regarding this entire situation.

Thus, a plea to the many that are closely involved in this matter; until an equitable and amicable solution can be reached, prepare for the meeting, bide your time, and let cooler heads prevail.

Richard J. Cabral
First Selectman

Controversial Ending To Middle School State Open Meet

16 middle schools-both public and private- from across Connecticut gathered at the Cheshire Community Pool on Saturday January 26th to compete for the state open championship. Over 400 swimmers participated in the meet. By all accounts it was the most closely contested meet yet in its 7 year history. Brookfield, HK, Long River, and Kingswood-Oxford were all with a few points of each other both for the overall championship and for the girls' championship going into the final relay-an event that officially never occurred! Prior to the end of the 50 yd. Butterfly, meet director Brian Reiff of Brookfield was ordered by the Cheshire pool director to end the meet after the butterfly due to a time conflict with a local group that wanted to use the pool. This announcement provoked a loud, sustained chorus of boos from the over 600 people in attendance. Great disappointment and anger spread throughout the crowd as people tried to comprehend why someone would do this.

Meanwhile, many of the disappointed swimmers received permission from their coaches to change and to go home with their parents, thinking that there would be no last relay. After many had already changed and left the building, the pool director bowed to pressure from the crowd and relented and allowed the final relay to be swum. Unfortunately, it was too late for HK and a couple of other teams who had released their swimmers to travel home. As a result, the last relay became an unofficial event. It was an especially unfortunate outcome for HK as the Cougars were seeded a huge 50 seconds faster than one of their rivals-Kingswood-Oxford- who was at that time only 25 points ahead of HK in the runner-up position to top-seeded Brookfield. HK would have picked up 44 points by swimming their seed time and would have beaten the time recorded by Brookfield in the unofficial running of the race.

I just don't get how anyone could make such a foolish and ill-considered decision. Hundreds of kids and their coaches from all over the state have been pointing to this meet as our culminating event of the year. Our schools paid a lot of money to rent this place; our parents and supporters paid admission to see this meet result in the crowning of a middle school champion. To have so many teams so close to each other going into the final relay and have the suspense of a dramatic finish taken away from the kids, the parents, and the coaches is just terrible. As it turns out, my kids were pointing toward that relay and had they swum their seed time, they would have not only won the event by 5 seconds, but also would have finished no worse than 2nd in the championship Each should have gotten a medal for finishing in the top 6. It really soured the experience for everyone involved. It was just unbelievable that someone would do that, especially after the meet was delayed 15-20 minutes by an electronic problem with the starting device at the facility. We think we finished 3rd but due to the confusion at the end, we won't know officially until Monday.

HKMS Head Coach Phil Devlin
