Library Tuesday Book Discussion Group
The Tuesday Book Discussion Group will meet on April 8 in the Killingworth Library meeting room to discuss Russell Shorto's history of New Netherlands. "The Island at the Center of the World" brings to life the Dutch colony which covered all or parts of five states, including New Jersey and Connecticut. Shorto makes a case that the multi-cultural, commercial, and more open society that was and is Manhattan is an outgrowth of the more tolerant society of the 17th century Dutch Republic. As history goes, it sings.

Discussion begins at 1:00 and newcomers are always welcome.

Killingworth residents who attended the December 20, 2007 town meeting have voted against abandoning two dirt roads in town. The party who brought the question of abandoning the roads to the town, The Hammonasset Fishing Assoc. also wanted almost a mile of roads quitclaimed to them. The HFA is an exclusive private hunting and fishing club that owns property in both Madison and Killingworth. The HFA had a deal in the works with the Killingworth Selectmen to trade removal of the Tibbal's Bridge for the quit claim deed to portions of Jay Dowd Rd. and most of Tibbal's Bridge Rd. The HFA claims the bridge is in disrepair. Read more
Area Vo-Ag Program Hosts Falconry Program
The Middletown Vocational Agricultural Program recently hosted a program on falconry, the ancient pastime of kings and noblemen. Presenters Jon D'Arpino and John White are two of only 16 licensed falconers in the state. Falconry, the use of wild raptors to hunt, was legalized by the legislature in 1998; it took another seven years for the state Department of Environmental Protection to approve regulations governing the sport. Read all about the presentation in the Hartford Courant.
