Meyer Secures Funding for Sheldon RenovationState Senator Ed Meyer announced yesterday that the state has approved a $400,000 Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) grant for renovations to Irene Sheldon Park in Killingworth. The grant will be used to renovate the park into a baseball only facility.
"Killingworth has a good plan for the development of their recreation fields, and I am delighted that my request for state funding has been accepted," Sen. Meyer said.
"This will be fantastic for us," Killingworth Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman Dan Colonia said yesterday. "We've had the same fields for the past 30 years that have not been fixed or renovated. These fields are in very bad shape, and we need to build new dugouts and improve the parking lot."
In addition to thanking Sen. Meyer and Rep. Brian O'Connor for their support in Hartford, Dan Colonia said he especially wanted to congratulate and thank Chris Kelly for all his hard work in preparing the STEAP grant application. "The result reflects his dedication and the quality of his work."
Meyer also announced that the State Bond Commission approved the $125,000 needed to install the traffic light on Route 81 in front of the middle school. The Bond Commission met yesterday morning and according to Meyer's staff, the light funding was the final item on the agenda. Rep. O'Connor and Sen. Meyer were instrumental in getting the item on the agenda.

Author Visits Library Discussion GroupKillingworth Library was "the place to be" Tuesday night when local author, Leslie Bulion joined our READERS + EATERS book discussion group. Getting to ask all those 'behind the scenes' questions that we're all curious about when we read a book was a real treat and Leslie didn't disappoint the 5th, 6th and 7th graders that came to meet her. Mark your calendars for another Leslie Bulion visit, July 16th, as part of our Summer Reading Program - CATCH THE READING BUG - when we switch from 'Uncharted Waters' to 'Hey There, Stink Bug'.

Sen. Meyer & Rep. O'Connor Anticipate Grant for Traffic LightState Senator Ed Meyer and State Rep. Brian J. O'Connor announced that the State Bond Commission is expected to approve a $125,000 state grant-in-aid to Killingworth for the installation of a traffic signal on Route 81 at the entrance to the new Haddam-Killingworth Middle School when it meets at 10:30 a.m. this Friday, March 28, in Room 1-E of the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.
"The lack of a traffic light in front of the newly reopened Haddam-Killingworth Middle School has been a severe public safety issue for some time now. We've been warned by local traffic experts that it would only be a matter of time until a serious or fatal accident occurred between the throng of students in the area and the high-speed traffic along Route 81," Sen. Meyer said. "I am pleased the Governor Rell and the State Bond Commission have seen fit to address my concerns and the concerns of so many parents and educators regarding the need to improve public safety in the area."
"This is great news. The installation of the traffic light at the entrance of the Haddam- Killingworth Middle School is extremely important to the overall safety of the children, parents, and bus drivers entering and leaving the middle school and to the commuters that travel Route 81 during that time," Rep. O'Connor said. "This is a long-term solution to a dangerous situation, and I am pleased that the governor and the bond commission looked favorably on this project. I would like to especially thank Senator Meyer for all is hard work on this issue."

Meyer Pushes for School Traffic LightAccording to the Hartford Courant, the State Bond Commission will consider the allocation of $125,000 for the purchase and installation of a traffic light in front of the middle school at its March 28 meeting.
The town currently employs two traffic control officers to direct traffic in front of the middle school and elementary school. On March 10, two schools buses and a pickup truck were involved in an accident in front of the middle school. The Town and school district requested the traffic light last year, but the state denied the request, then acquiesced saying the light could be installed but would not fund it. School and Town officials said they were not able to fund the installation of the light.
State Sen. Edward Meyer said, "The lack of a traffic light ... has been a severe public safety issue for some time now," "We've been warned by local traffic experts that it would only be a matter of time until a serious or fatal accident occurred."
Meyer and state Rep. Brian O'Connor, joined forces to lobby party leaders to put the traffic signal project on the bond commission's agenda.
