Horse Driving Competition Wheels Into Haddam
The Connecticut Valley Driving Club hosts its 4th annual Driving Trial for horse and driver on June 7th at Haddam Meadows State Park on Route 154 in Haddam.

The "combined driving event", or CDE, will attract over 30 competitors from across New England and New York. "This is the fastest growing equine sport in the country," says club president Andrée Duggan, "and it's easy to see why. It's elegant and exciting for both competitor and spectator."

Combined Driving is similar to 3-phase events under saddle, but each competitor must complete Dressage, Cones, and Marathon versus Dressage, Stadium Jumping and Cross Country. The best combined score wins in each of six divisions from Miniature Horse all the way up to Horse Pairs. The sport attracts youth drivers to seniors, and they compete side by side. It also attracts a wide range of breeds including Cheval Canadien, Hackney, Gypsy Vanner, Friesian, Morgan, Arab, Dale Pony, New Forest Pony, Welsh, Fjord, Standardbred, Saddlebred and Clyde/TB Cross.

The Connecticut Valley Driving Trial is officially recognized by, and follows the official rules of, The American Driving Society. The event is run by more than sixty five volunteers and by organizers Nancy and Bill Lawson of Durham with Andrée Duggan of Killingworth. Officials include President of the Jury, Craig Kellogg and Technical Delegate, Marc Johnson.

Spectators are welcome. The Dressage and Cones portion of the event runs from 8:30 am through mid-day, and then the fast-paced Marathon with obstacles runs from around 1:00 pm through 3:30. The Awards Ceremony follows. Haddam Boy Scout Troop 44 will provide the food concession once again, and will be serving hot dogs and hamburgers.

Officials ask that spectators yield to carriages while on the field, and that they leash all dogs to ensure the safety of all. Spectators can pick up a program in the central red and white tent for more information and instructions for enjoying the show. Major Sponsors include New England Carriage Imports and Harbor Motors of Old Saybrook.

HK Sports: The HK Varsity Baseball team was ousted from the Shoreline Conference tournament Thursday, falling to Hale-Ray, 3-1.

The Cougars helped Hale Ray in the top of the first as two unearned runs crossed the plate allowing the Noises to jump out to a 2-0 lead.

That score held up as HK threatened in several innings, but was not be able to get a run in and put some pressure on the Noises. That allowed Hale Ray to scratch another run in the sixth to expand their lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the seventh the Cougars came alive as Brian Ludington crossed the plate after he singled to lead off the inning. With the potential tying run on base and clinging to their hope of another trip to the SLC final, HK fell short by a 3-1 score.

Lou Annino was the losing pitcher, but kept HK in the game the entire way. He would also be the only Cougar with multiple hits going 2-3. The Cougars will now wait until the state tournament to play their next game, but will face the HK alumni on Monday in a tune-up for their final 2008 run. Game time is scheduled for 1pm.

KWO Celebrates Anniversary
By Gena M. Murray Co-Founder of the KWO
May 1, 2008 marked the 5-year anniversary of the very first meeting of the Killingworth Women's Organization. It was five years ago that a group of women, mostly strangers, gathered together and unanimously decided that a Women's Organization was truly something needed in this town. We proceeded forward, full steam ahead setting the goals we were getting ready to accomplish. When I have a quiet moment (rarely) and sit and think how much we have done I am blown away. So many women volunteering their time with our already busy lives.

We are mothers, friends, daughters, spouses, and caretakers, and yet we have found the generosity within our hearts to give back to our community. I think about how we have enhanced the lives of the people in our town and beyond. We have put smiles on children's faces and laughter within their hearts at the Halloween Happenings, Lights Spectacular, and by dancing the night away at KES this Spring. We have helped collect toys for children, gift cards for the elderly, and gave comfort to cancer victims. We have participated in and organized cancer walks, an Art Auction, formed scholarships for high school students and so on and so on......(I could go on bragging forever). When in need we have been there for each other and our families and have formed lifetime friendships amongst ourselves.

So THANK YOU, THANK YOU ladies for a job well done way beyond my expectations. When Mary Ellen Wilson came to me 5 years ago to ask if I would be interested in forming a Women's group I said "sure that sounds great". "Let's get a few women together and do some good things in town", never expecting it to blossom into what it is today. So everyone take a moment and give yourself a big pat on the back for keeping the KWO going strong and thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving your time unselfishly.

Super Soccer Seminar
When Courtney Whalen and Hannah O'Leary, 7th graders at the HK Middle School, put their heads together on a bleak winter day, a great summer plan emerged; holding a summer soccer camp for young girls in their community. The duo asked their fellow teammates on the HK Girl's U-14 Travel Team Holly Nord, Taylor Schultz and Grace Colonia-Hughes for their assistance in running the program. In order for the camp to become a reality, their idea had to be approved by their sponsors, the HK Soccer Club. At the club's April meeting, the girls presented their proposal and the club members voted unanimously to lend it their support and approval.

Super Soccer Seminar, the girl's camp, will be held on Mondays from June 31st to July 28th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the multi-purpose field behind the Old Middle School. The camp is open to girls entering 1st and 2nd grade interested in learning the basic fundamentals of soccer. The camp provides an opportunity for girls to learn the techniques of dribbling, passing, shooting and teamwork. Participants will also be taught the positions and rules of the game. The cost of the camp is $15. To register, please contact Karen Vecchitto at 663-4227 or Patricia Trapasso at 663-3413.

Town Meeting Passes Budget: Mil Rate Drops Slightly
At the Annual Town Budget Meeting last night 41 residents voted to approve the Town's $5,932,063 operating budget and approve the capital expenditure budget of $124,200 for the fiscal year July 1, 2008 - June 30, 2009. The budget passed by an overwhelming margin with only two dissenting votes, no discussions or challenges.

Following the meeting, the Board of Finance set the new mil rate at 0.02100. This represents a slight reduction from last year's rate of 0.02120. According to Board of Finance Vice Chairman Louis Annino, Sr. the mill rate reflects the fiscally responsible approach on behalf of Killingworth's taxpayers taken by both the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Finance.

HK Sports: H-K Boys Tennis Defeats Old Saybrook 5-2 to improve Shoreline Conference record to 18-0

The HK Boys Tennis continued the season undefeated by besting Old Saybrook in an away match on the saybrook courts. "It was cold and quite windy", said Coach Rod Pakus "and the matches were won by the steadier player". "If you went for too much, you were penalized by the gusting and swirling winds."

Senior Tri Captain Ryan Hawkins defeated Kyle McGowan of the Rams (6-0, 6-4) while Old Saybrook's Cameron Dunlap evened the match with a hard fought (7-6-TB 7-1, 6-3) win over the Cougars' #2 Cody Warren. The number 3 singles match went to Patrick Gilhuly of HK in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) over Casey McGowan. Old Saybrook again evened the match score when the Rams Bryan Cryder defeated Varun Ravishankar (6-1, 6-1). H-K's Andrew McCurdy won at #5 singles defeating Chime Tsewane in three sets (3-6, 6-1, 6-4) to complete singles play.

Joe Cerino kept his unbeaten doubles record intact by teaming with Cougar Junior Matt Waldman to defeat Kyle Gregoiroe and Tenzin Kunkyab (6-0,6-0). The HK doubles duo of Tom McKinnon and Ken Roberts closed out the match with an impressive (6-0, 6-0) win over the Rams James Wetherspoon and Chris Mane in the #2 doubles match. "It was a good win but a bit melancholy for me", remarked Pakus. "Remember that the McGowan brothers played for us last year before transferring down here to Old Saybrook. It was like watching your own children play one another. They are great kids and they welcomed our team as if they were brothers."

The HK Varsity Baseball team ended the 2008 regular season on a high note downing Ellington, 3-0. Three different HK pitchers combined on the shut out.

The Cougars got on the board in the third inning when Steve Landell and Kyle Allison hit back-to-back RBI singles to make the score 2-0. In the fifth, HK tacked on an insurance run when Alex Pollack (2-3, 2 runs, SB) walked, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a passed ball. With a 3-0 lead all the offense could muster, it was a good thing that the Cougar pitching was up to par.

Three different pitchers all got some work on the afternoon. AJ Margnelli threw the first three, Chris Bova the fourth and fifth, and Landell earned the save by going the final two. The trio combine to pitch seven innings, allowing five hits, while striking out four.

HK ends the season with a 15-5 (13-4) record and has earned the #2 seed in the SLC tournament. They will host a first round tournament game at 3:45 on Thursday, May 22nd.

Killingworth Land Conservation Trust Annual Meeting
The Killingworth Land Conservation Trust will hold its annual meeting and Spring program Thursday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m. at the Congregational Church's Parish Hall on Route 81. The program will include the presentation "Wild Mushrooms of Killingworth!"

This year's land trust Spring program will be presented by Terry Doyle, who has been scouring the area for mushrooms for many years. The talk, illustrated with beautiful images, will cover some of the common mushrooms found in Killingworth and, more importantly, how not to get poisoned by eating the wrong ones! He will have some of his favorite guides on hand and, as always, we'll have plenty of time for questions and answers.

This presentation is free and open to the public. Join us for a fun and informative meeting!

U14 Boys Win Clinton Tournament
The Haddam Killingworth Soccer Club U14 Boys were the Champions in the Clinton Tournament held this past weekend. The team won all three qualifying games on Saturday to earn the number one seed going into Sunday's semifinal game. In that game, HK's Andrew Mead scored the only goal in the 1-0 overtime win over Guilford. In the finals, HK faced Coginchaug. The game, scoreless after regulation and two overtime periods, went to a MLS penalty shootout. Great goalkeeping by Pat Gorman and clutch shots by Mead, Joey LaRosa and Richard Coletti sealed the victory after a weekend of great team work.

Police Chase Ends at Traffic Circle
According to www.WTNH.com, Police have a suspect in custody after an overnight pursuit triggered by a driver going the wrong way on I-95. The chase ended with a crash in Killingworth.

David Schoendorf, 33, of East Haven, faces multiple charges including assault in a police officer, and is behind bars this morning on $200,000 bond.

It all started around 3:00 a.m. when police got the report of the wrong-way driver. That driver got off the interstate and onto Route 1, and sped right past Clinton police headquarters.

He crashed his car at the traffic circle where Route 81 and 80 meet and tried to run away, but police with guns drawn got him and put him under arrest.

During the chase the driver clipped two Clinton police cruisers. One officer was taken to the shoreline clinic to be treated for minor injuries.

Police seized some evidence from the car, but we don't yet know why the driver led police on the chase.

Fire Company Shows Support for Project Graduation
Trish Hatin accepts the donation from Charlie Mertz
At last week's Project Graduation meeting, committee members had a surprise quest. Charlie Mertz, representing the Killingworth Fire Company, made a generous donation in support of the substance free, all night celebration for graduating seniors. Unfortunately, the Fire Company sees what happens to kids who don't have a safe place to go on a special night like graduation. Mertz, a long time chaperone, and the rest of the volunteers fire fighters are very supportive of Project Graduation.

This is the 19th year for the Project Graduation event at HKHS without a single graduation night tragedy. The seniors get spoiled all night long with food, games, entertainment, swimming, and unbelievable prizes. And the last 10 years or so we have had 90-95% attendance rate for the graduating class.

There is still time to donate! Send all contributions to HKHS Attention: Project Graduation, P.O. Box 569, Higganum, CT, 06441. If you are able to donate your time to help with chaperoning, picking up or delivering food, set up or clean up, please contact Trish Hatin at 663-3451 (trishhatin@sbcglobal.net or Sue Craffey at 345-3908 (jcraffey@snet.net). Thank you for your support! (Photo courtesy T. Hatin)

To the Editor:

Response to "6 Months 'OFF THE JOB'":

As an outside observer of Killingworth politics, it appears to me that Mr. Klein has learned nothing from the experience that forced him "off the job" six months ago: he still does not understand that presenting ideas in an obnoxious and off-putting manner makes people stop listening. Killingworth expects elected officials and residents to be respectful of each other and to show emotional intelligence. Neither is present in Mr. Klein's letter. The points Mr. Klein tries to make in his letter may be valid. Unfortunately, his letter to the editor is just a disorganized rant that forces even the most resilient reader to move on to another topic. His letter accomplishes nothing. It offends reasonable people and wastes Mr. Klein's considerable energy and dedication.

Mr. Klein presents himself as someone who gets things done. If he is to be an effective leader within the Killingworth community, the first thing he needs to get done is to change his own political style.

HK Sports: Coach Brooks Wins 500th

HK Head Coach Mark Brookes reached the 500 win milestone on Saturday with a convincing, 14-0, victory over Valley Regional. Coach Brookes has been the varsity baseball coach at Haddam-Killingworth since the program started in the 1977-78 school year. Read what legendary Middletown High baseball coach John DeNunzio says about Coach Brookes.

The game was stuck in a 0-0 pitchers duel until HK scratched a run in the third thanks to a Steve Landell sacrifice fly to deep center. It would soon be 3-0 as an AJ Margnelli RBI double would be the big hit in a two run fifth.

Meanwhile, HK starting pitcher Lou Annino was mowing down Valley hitters all morning as he cruised through all seven innings. He allowed only four hits while striking out six for the complete game shutout.

Not that the Cougars would need it, but for good measure they exploded for an 11 run sixth inning that featured eight hits, three walks, and a whopping 16 batters. The big hits in the inning were a pair of two-run singles by Mike Waterbury(2-4, 3 runs, 2 RBI) and Kyle Allison (2-4, run, 3 RBI). Landell (2-4, run, 2 RBI) would also have a good day at the plate.

Celebrate Survivorship, Remember, Fight Back
The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life celebrates the lives of hundreds of local residents who have survived cancer, while offering the hope of finding a cure. To honor the incredible strength and courage of cancer survivors, all area survivors are invited to unite in a "Victory Lap" followed by a survivor reception at the Relay For Life event in Killingworth at the Haddam/Killingworth High School on Friday May 30. The Victory Lap will take place directly after the opening ceremony at 7:00 p.m.

The Relay For Life event, May 30-31, is an all-night community event bringing together teams of families, friends, religious groups, neighborhoods, and businesses - all with the same goal of curing cancer in the new millennium. Teams of walkers keep a continuous presence on the track throughout the night, walking in shifts to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

Dollars raised during Relay For Life help support American Cancer Society research, education, advocacy, and patient services. Programs include Reach to Recovery, providing one-on-one support for breast cancer patients; and Resource Centers, offering comfortable settings to research cancer information via computers, books, and videos. Relay For Life also helps maintain the American Cancer Society's toll-free 24-hour cancer information line at 1-800-ACS-2345.

This year's Relay For Life event of Haddam/Killingworth is sponsored by PCI Medical of Deep River. Relay For Life is a handicapped-accessible event. To find out how to get involved in Relay For Life or to volunteer, please contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 or online at www.cancer.org.
