By Karen Milano
It's hard to miss the man, he's everywhere. You may have seen him in bright yellow gear directing traffic on your morning commute to work, or while dropping your kids off at school. He's on the scene for fire department calls...and he can be found
Gerry Manware and Don Berry
under a straw hat riding a mower at the town hall, library and ballfields. If you're driving through Jensen's around any of the major holidays you'll catch an eyeful with his elaborate displays. I bet a lot of you already know who I'm talking about.

I tracked down Gerry Manware this week to learn more about the man who dedicates so much of his time to getting things done around town. We sat in the living room of the home he shares with his wife, Gloria, as a recently rescued cat sat by his savior.

Gerry was born and raised in West Haven along with three brothers, all of whom have some involvement in New Haven area Fire Departments. He began his volunteer FF career in 1962. Driven by a love for music and gathering people, for a time he organized Record Hops (gee, there's still something I can honestly say I am too young to remember) and DJ'd many a local dance. Together, he and Gloria raised four children and now enjoy the blessings of four grandchildren. Officially retiring from his "day job" at the Telephone company in 1993, he eventually landed in Killingworth and became active in our community.

Currently, Gerry is a member of the Killingworth Volunteer Fire Company, he's employed to maintain the lawns at the ballfields, town hall and library, and serves the school district as Traffic Control Officer alongside Don Berry.

In this particular role, Gerry asks that certain safety precautions be taken by all those passing the school property during arrivals and departures. In order to ensure everyone's safety he asks that we put lights on in rain, snow and fog, give right-of-ways to buses and watch for stop or go signals. Talking on cell phones is dangerous and still common practice, and he'd like to see all residents slow down in the school zones.

I've come to the conclusion that "retirement" is not a word you'll find in Gerry's dictionary. The energizer bunny comes to mind...
ON THE SIXTH DAY OF HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS "PAPERWORK"

Take a moment to make sure you have copies of important identification, insurance and legal documents in your emergency kit. Consider also keeping important materials in a safe deposit box.

Make a habit of reviewing your homeowner's insurance once a year to make sure it suits current needs. If you rent, consider renter's insurance, which could protect the contents of your rented home in many disaster and theft situations. The coverage can be very affordable and is often the only way to replace items lost in rented homes.

ON THE FIFTH DAY OF HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS "HAZARD INVENTORY"

Conduct a hazard search around your home. Look for items that could become dangerous in high winds, like dead tree limbs, loose shutters and unsecured furniture. Make a plan to address items that need fixing and a plan on where to store loose items.
While you're checking, make sure that things are safe inside, too. If your home is prone to flooding, it's a good idea to raise appliances like furnaces, hot water heaters, washers, dryers and electrical panels to prevent damage. Consult your utility company, electrician, or plumber.

It's also a good time to make sure there are smoke alarms on each floor of your home and in each bedroom and that you've replaced batteries recently. The beginning and end of daylight saving time are good dates to change batteries. The Charter Oak Chapter of the American Red Cross has more information on making your home safer. Visit them at www.charteroak.redcross.org.

Ambulance Association Names Director Emeritus
Thirty-seven years ago a small group of dedicated, compassionate and brave residents decided it was time for the Town to have its own ambulance corp. Most only had a first-aid course under their belt, but they were willing to try and help residents and visitors in distress. Last Sunday, the cornerstone of that group, Walter Albrecht, 89, was honored by the Killingworth Ambulance Association with the title of Director Emeritas and with the first lifetime membership awarded by the KAA. With his family by his side, Albrecht was first honored by State Senator Ed Meyer and Killingworth First Selectman Richard Cabral. Meyer thanked Albrecht for a "lifetime if incredible service" and read a proclamation from the state legislature in his honor. Cabral read a Board of Selectmen proclamation that declared June 2, 2008 Walter Albrecht Day.

Albrecht served the KAA as a driver, caregiver and, when the new building was opened in 1982, he was in charge of buildings and grounds as well. KAA President Pat Lirot said, "We never had to worry about anything when Walter was on the job". Albrecht's sons Larry and Rick as well as daughters Joanne and Linda and grandson Matt have all followed in his footsteps, serving in the ambulance corp., fire company or both.

Albrecht moved to Killingworth in 1949 and worked as a carpenter raising his four children with his beloved wife of 68 years, Dorothy. Well wishes were with "Dot" who was not able to attend because she is recovering from a leg injury. On his arrival in town, Albrecht almost immediately started volunteering in the community. He was a fifty year member of the Volunteer Fire Company, a constable for the water company for 40 years, head of the Democratic Town Committee for 20 years and a long-time member of the VFW.

In 1971 he convinced resident Marion Platt to purchase the Town's first ambulance, a 1964 Cadillac, for $1,000. Five of the founding members of the KAA were on hand at Aleia's in Old Saybrook to honor and thank Albrecht and to revisit the "old times". Sheridan Perkins, Romanie Gussenhoven, Betty Harris, Don McDougall and Ruth Patrick each reflected on the years they spent riding along side Albrecht. In the first quarter of that first year, the inexperienced but enthusiastic crew answered 13 calls. Last year the KAA set a new record answering an astonishing 370 calls.

The surprise celebration for Albrecht was part of the KAA's Annual Dinner to thank its members for their service. The KAA also thanked the Fire Company, Town Crew, and the 911 dispatch for their roles in aiding and transporting accident victims and residents with medical emergencies.

Sen. Ed Meyer, Director Emeritus Walter Albrecht, KAA President Pat Lirot and First Selectman Richard Cabral

ON THE FOURTH DAY OF HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS "ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS"

Consider purchasing additional supplies that might be helpful in creating and maintaining a safe household. Consider purchasing an A-B-C type fire extinguisher for your home. Make sure everyone is trained in it use. Consider purchasing sleeping bags for your family. If you have to evacuate, a sleeping bag will provide extra comfort when you are at a Red Cross shelter. It can also help you to stay warm during an extended power outage.

Evaluate your energy needs and consider purchasing a generator. If you or a family member has electrically powered medical equipment, this is an important purchase to consider. Make sure that you have this equipment professionally installed and follow all operating instructions carefully.

D-Day Presentation at the Killingworth Library
To commemorate the 64th anniversary of D-Day, the Killingworth Library is offering a two part lecture and slide presentation by town resident, Kelvin W. Cole. Part One will be given on Friday, June 6 at 4 p.m. at the library. It is titled "The Necessity of D-Day" and begins with the evacuation of the Allied Armies from Dunkirk and the construction of the German defenses along the 1,000 mile Atlantic wall. Part Two will be held on Tuesday, June 17th again at 4 p.m. It details the Allied assault on "Fortress Europe" and explains how this critical campaign laid the groundwork for the ultimate Allied victory.

Cole's study of this historical period began around 1994 when the Hartford Courant ran a series about what had happened fifty years ago on that particular day. The year was 1944 and the events those of the Second World War. He read them with growing interest, and around the same time, bought a book at a Killingworth Library book sale on the subject. "The Pictorial History of World War II", bought for a dollar, was full of information directly related to the events highlighted in the Courant's series.

The path to further knowledge about the period got an unexpected boost from a seemingly unrelated event. Cole answered a small notice in the Killingworth Krier for offers of homes for foreign athletes coming to Connecticut for the Special Olympics in hosted in New Haven in 1995. As a result of his inquiry, he hosted a French coach and two gymnasts. An invitation from the coach to visit him in France brought Cole to Normandy. He explained that what he learned at Normandy on that and several subsequent trips he could not have learned anywhere else. Through his lectures and slides Cole seeks to share that knowledge with others.

Volunteers Needed for Horseshoe Crab Study
The Friends of Hammonasset is sponsoring a Horseshoe Crab Presentation and Beach Training Session at the Meigs Point Nature Center at Hammonasset Beach State Park on Thursday, June 12th at 7:00 p.m. Interested volunteers will have an opportunity to learn how to tag horseshoe crabs, conduct spawning surveys, and record and submit data.

The horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) survived mass extinctions and the Ice Age to become one of the oldest living species on Earth. You can find this living legend here in Connecticut, along the sandy bottoms of Long Island Sound. Every year from May until late July, horseshoe crabs appear on local beaches to spawn and lay eggs.

In recent years, their populations have been in decline, potentially affecting the ecosystems of Long Island Sound and the Eastern Seaboard. Project Limulus monitors the changes in horseshoe crab population and migration patterns, and needs your help to count and tag specimens for their study.

If you would like to register for participation in the training, please contact Ranger Russ Miller by email at rangerruss@hammonasset.org, or call the Meigs Point Nature Center at 203-245-8743.
ON THE THIRD DAY OF HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS "BE INFORMED"

Know what may happen and how to respond. Learn what disasters or emergencies may occur where you live, work and play. Identify how local authorities will notify you during a disaster and you will get important information from local television, radio, or weather service broadcasts. Learn what you can do to be better prepared by taking a Red Cross course in CPR and first aid. At least one person in your home should be trained. Be sure that you have a battery-powered radio, preferably one with a weather band.

The Charter Oak Chapter of the American Red Cross can help you to know what you need to prepare and can provide information and resources. Contact them at www.charteroak.redcross.org.

Community Read Kicks Off With Climbing Wall
Despite the threat of bad weather, more than 70 people came to try their skill on a 26' rock climbing wall in the parking lot of Burr Elementary School. The event marked the kick-off of the 2nd annual "Three Books, Two Towns, One Community...READ" program in the communities of Haddam and Killingworth. Kids and adults alike attempted up to 5 different cables, and were rewarded at the end with a piece of rock candy. The 3 selected books (Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer, Everest: The Contest by Gordon Korman, and Maxwell's Mountain by Shari Becker) were offered for sale, as our communities "gear up" to participate in this year's climbing theme. If you missed the kick-off, books are available on loan or for purchase at both town libraries. For more information about the books and future events, visit the website www.mylibraryrocks.com/321, or stop in at your local library.
ON THE SECOND DAY OF HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS "MAKE A PLAN"

Planning ahead will help you have the best possible response to a disaster. Know what disaster risks could affect your family and discuss what you can do as a team to prepare. Create an evacuation plan for your house; practice it twice a year. Choose a place to meet away from home, if you are separated during a disaster and can't get home. Designate a spot near home where you would gather during a sudden emergency, like a fire. Make sure that everyone in the household has important emergency numbers handy. Know how to shut off utilities in your home, if necessary. Make sure everyone in your family knows where you emergency information and supplies are kept. And don't forget to include your pets in your planning. They need care too!

Free information about creating and maintaining an emergency plan is available by visiting the Red Cross web site at www.charteroak.redcross.org.

The HK Boys Tennis Doubles duo of Senior Joe Cerino and Junior Matt Waldman advanced to the Doubles Semi-Finals of the State Class S Tennis Tournament on the Conard High School courts in West Hartford yesterday. They advanced to meet the #1 seed from Weston High School by winning a three set victory over Bolton's #4 seeded team of Kyle Borton and Kristopher Borton (6-4, 6-7 TB(2),6-4)in a quarter final match. For Cerino and Waldman, the #12 seeds, this is their third three set match they have won and second straight match where they have defeated a higher seeded team. "Perhaps that loss in the Shoreline Conference final was a motivator and a reminder to get back on track", said Coach Pakus, "all their matches here have been tough, but they have maintained a high level of confidence which has seen them through the third sets of each of those matches."

In another quarterfinal match, HK's Senior Ryan Hawkins and Sophomore Patrick Gilhuly, the #7 seeds lost in straight sets to the #2 seeded Weston High School team of Will Weiss and Andrew Pesco (6-3, 6-2). "We had break opportunities in both sets", said Coach Rod Pakus, "but we failed to capitalize on them. I remember one game going to three or four deuces before Weston closed the door on us. They are a good, solid team and they played a strong, well structured match. They're a tough out and earned the win."

The tournament continues today with matches to be played at William Hall High School in West Hartford.

Relay For Life Sets New Record
The Haddam Killingworth Relay for Life held over the weekend raised more than $113,000 for research, education and support towards the mission of eliminating cancer as a major health issue. This year's event exceeded last year in funds raised, total teams and survivors in attendance. Co-Chairs Cindy Pitts and Lee Kozlowski and their committee spent the last year planning the event and organizing caregivers, cancer survivors, friends and loved ones for this two-day event held on the HK High School track and infield.

Pitts said the opening ceremony held on Friday evening is a chance to welcome everyone and hype them up for the hours of walking ahead. She said the luminary ceremony, held as darkness falls, is all about crying together for those lost and those still fighting for life. During the special walk, bags with candles bearing the name of someone who battled cancer ringed the track. Participants walked, reading the names and thinking of those they were there to celebrate with, remember and fight for. Throughout the night and into the morning, team members took turns walking the track.

In just the second year of the relay, 60 teams and over 100 survivors were in attendance. Pitts and Kozlowski sent out special thanks to their committee members, sponsors and American Cancer Society Staff Partner Alexia Begin.

5th Annual Trails Day Hike
Connecticut Trails Day is Saturday, June 7. The Connecticut Forest and Park Association promotes this event statewide each year to increase awareness and appreciation of the many trail systems in our state. This year the theme is, "Join Us on the Trail," an invitation to get outside and experience the great outdoors. The Killingworth Land Conservation Trust invites you to join us on one of our trails, the Upper Hammonasset Trail, on that day. We will meet and park along the Madison/Killingworth town line on Route 80 at 9:30 that morning, and head south, a little over a mile, to a trail opening on Bar Gate Trail. The plan is to have some cars parked there ahead of time, for the return trip after some refreshments.

This will be a family hike, but there is some more challenging terrain, so children under 7 might find it too difficult. We will cross an interesting metal pedestrian bridge under the road, pass the reservoir dam (waterfall and rapids when there has been lots of rain!), go by an old tanning mill, see cliffs, view an area where beaver are busy, cross small streams with little waterfalls, and we will pass through a variety of wooded areas Letterboxing and geocaching will be demonstrated along the route (see letterboxing.org and geocaching.com for information on these fun outdoor hobbies) In case of rain, the walk will take place on Sunday, June 8. Wear good walking shoes and bring water.

RSVP is not necessary (Debby Butler at 663-2231) , but would help plan vehicles for the return trip and for refreshments. We hope to see you then! Click to download the Connecticut Trials Day Brochure

Finally, we wish to send a special note of gratitude to those involved in managing concessions at the playing fields. KYL relies heavily on monies earned through concessions for field improvement, equipment purchases and other expenses. This is an often overlooked and time consuming endeavor. So, the next time you are enjoying a grilled hamburger or cold drink, or even satisfying your sweet tooth with some candy, please thank Bill Velez for keeping our supplies stocked. Thanks also to Cathy Gargiulo and Jennifer Marenna for working at the grill for many, many hours.

We have some exciting plans for next season. Please join us for our monthly meetings check our website for details!

With gratitude,
Sally Bauer, Treasurer, KYL

In an effort to keep all of you safe, if such a disaster were to occur, we will be providing you, over the next seven days, with a road map on what to assemble and what to do.
