Local Business Destroyed by FireAccording to the Hartford Courant, the office of the A.A. Zanardi Paving and Excavating Co. in Chester was destroyed late Wednesday afternoon by a fire of undetermined origin.
Dan and Dean Zanardi, the brothers who co-own the 77-year-old company, were at the scene Thursday afternoon. Dan Zanardi said the company lost six computers, and records dating back to the 1920s.
The fire, in a former barn that the company converted to an office a decade ago, was reported at 5:15 p.m by a neighbor across the street. James Grzybowski, deputy chief of the Chester Hose Company, said the structure was fully involved "with fire blowing through a hole in the front," when firefighters arrived.
Grzybowski said Chester volunteers received mutual aid from firefighters from Deep River, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, Old Saybrook and Middletown's South District fire departments. He said about 45 firefighters were on the scene for nearly three hours.

To the Editor:
As I write this letter, I am saddened and outraged that the "Freedom Bell" at Burr District Elementary School, Higganum was stolen recently. The bell was donated by Burr PTO in honor of Flag Day 2002. The individuals who stole this bell should be ashamed of themselves. The bell represents freedom for our students, staff, and families. The PTO worked hard to raise the money to purchase the bell that was rung at different times during the year. It has been there for 6 years and not touched.
If the individuals who took the bell still have it in their possession, please return it. I know it is a long shot but, do the right thing. This world is upside down at the moment with theft, violence and the threat of terrorism. It deeply saddens me that the bell was taken to get money for it because of what metal the bell was made from. I hope the bell is found and returned but that is probably highly unlikely. We try to teach our children right from wrong and teach traditions for them to remember. That was what the bell for Flag Day 2002 was about: traditions and teaching our children about Flag Day and what it means for all of us.
We need everyone's help in hopefully finding the bell and getting it back to the bell house. If anyone knows anything about the recent disappearance of the "Freedom Bell", please contact the authorities.

Search Suspended for Missing Clinton SailorAccording to www.wtnh.com, the Coast Guard has suspended its search for a Clinton sailor that fell overboard in Rhode Island waters Monday night. It happened near the junction of the Sakonnet River and Mount Hope Bay around 5 p.m.
Bernard Mochan, 65, apparently was knocked out of the 32-foot sailboat when a wave hit it. His wife Melinda reported the accident and says he was not wearing a life jacket. Mochan is a deacon and choir member at the Killingworth Congregational Church.
A search by air and by sea has only turned up Mochan's shoe and hat.

Something' BIG' Is Coming This Summer!

Big - The Musical, a story made famous by the Tom Hanks movie is about a child who makes a wish to be grown, and upon fulfillment of this wish, sees first-hand the pressures of the adult world while offering us the rare glimpse of adulthood through the eyes of a child, reminding us that some of our "childlike" qualities are best to keep.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of BIG, the movie we all remember with pre-Forrest Gump Tom Hanks playing on a giant piano at FAO Schwartz.
With upbeat musical numbers, a full orchestra, a funny and witty script and cast of more than 100 actors (young and old), Artful Living Productions is counting on another smash hit. Plan on being amazed at the level of talent this community theatre has to offer.

The games have been typified by strong pitching, crisp fielding and an overall complete team effort. Of the 17 towns that make up District 9, only teams from Killingworth, Essex, Guilford, and Madison (National) have moved on to the semi-finals to be played tonight, Wednesday at 5:30 pm at Durham's Strong School/Coginchaug High School.

St. Lawrence Church Dedicates KneelerThrough the generosity of parishioners Carolyn & Norman Picard, the St. Lawrence Parish now has level surface and kneeler for prayer before the church's monument to the unborn. One day while praying in the roadway before the monument, Norman was inspired to create a kneeler. He ordered granite from China to compliment the monument and colorful plants to surround the setting. With the aid of a few friends, Norman constructed a beautiful addition to St. Lawrence Parish.
There was a dedication ceremony for the kneeler on June 29. Fr. Bob Buongirno and Deacon Bob Ferraro officiated.

State Commences Charter Oak Health Plan
Governor M. Jodi Rell announced that the state is now accepting applications for the Charter Oak Health Plan. The plan provides affordable health care for Connecticut's uninsured adults who are too old for HUSKY but too young for Medicare. It is the first health plan in the nation for the uninsured that does not require income limits, employer mandates or individual mandates.
"For employees of small businesses, people between jobs, young graduates and early retirees, affordable health care has been out of reach," Governor Rell said. "The Charter Oak Health Plan changes that dynamic. People have been crying out for this plan with calls and emails to my office asking when Charter Oak will become available. I am pleased to say that day has finally come.
"For the first time, Connecticut residents who are not able to get health insurance through their jobs will have access to decent, affordable coverage. In the absence of a national health policy, Connecticut is stepping up in a big way to cover our uninsured. Charter Oak is cost effective for both enrollees and taxpayers and meets a critical need for state residents. I urge all eligible residents to apply as soon as possible."
The Governor announced that a new toll free hotline, 1-877-77-CTOAK (1-877-772-8625), has been set up for the public to get more information about Charter Oak. The line will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. More information and applications can be found at www.charteroakhealthplan.com.
