The Killingworth Democratic Eye : Grassroots Democratic Platform Issues
Kathleen Amoia
On Sunday, July 20, the Killingworth Democratic Town Committee held a first time ever national platform meeting, advertised and open to the public. It was one of hundreds of mini-platform meetings held around the country to get grass roots, non-Washington input to the DNC Platform Committee and the Obama campaign. The KDTC meeting consisted of committee members and guests, including a Republican and at least one independent.

For over two hours, an honest civil discussion of the group's major concerns and hopes for the future was moderated by Gwenne Lally, KDTC Chairperson. We readily agreed to concentrate on the following areas: veterans issues, energy and the environment, foreign policy, immigration, health care, fiscal policy and the rural American community. Ethics, leadership, government civility, and transparency were considered overriding issues essential to all the others and equally essential to bringing about constructive change. Read more

Town to Utilize Automated Traffic Control Devices
According the the New Haven Register, Killingworth will begin a new campaign to control speeding on town roads. The effort is being funded by a $17,806 federal grant, awarded through the state Department of Transportation, and a new $6,500 town budget line item, said Bob Ellis, a member of the town traffic study committee.

The grant allowed the purchase of two automated traffic monitoring machines, for $10,269, that are being utilized to record the speed of passing cars and display those speeds for motorists. The town crew will move the devices to different roads as directed by Resident State Trooper Matt Ward to collect the data that will allow Ward and the committee to identify which of the town's roads have the highest rates of speed, Ellis noted.

The balance of the grant and the new town budget will pay for police overtime expenses for traffic enforcement, as manifested in the state trooper's presence on Green Hill Road.
It's Tough Being a Bug
Join local naturalist and author John Himmelman at the Killingworth Library on Thursday, July 31 at 7:00 p.m. for a multimedia presentation on insects. He'll share BUG stories, BUG sounds and BUG photographs.

It's tough being a bug. No matter how tiny you are, you need to find others of your kind in this great big world. Scores of other animals want to eat you. The cold is your mortal enemy. And you have very little time in which to accomplish what you need to in your brief journey on this planet. But these hardships have made the insects very good at what they do. Come to the presentation and gain some insight into how these creatures adapt in order to survive.
