Linus and Lucy make me smile. Why? In a recent Peanuts cartoon, Lucy shows her little brother the local library. She explains that you can take home any book you want. "Free?" Linus asks incredulously. "Absolutely free!" Lucy confirms. Linus ponders this a moment and then declares "Sort of makes you wonder what they're up to!"

Indeed! Whoever heard of such a thing??? The economy is on everyone's mind these days: gas prices soaring, food prices rising, businesses closing... Not much to smile about. Unless you visit the library.

The cost of a daily newspaper: 50 cents - $1.50; Sunday New York Times, $5.00

Community Gardeners Extend Hand to Needy
The first year of the Killingworth Community Gardens can easily be called a success despite the bunnies, woodchucks, bugs and multiple thunderstorms. But as the gardeners finally enjoy the bounty of vegetables produced from their hard work, they are also looking to fulfill one of the goals of the gardens; to provide fresh produce to the local food pantries. Yesterday, gardener Jackie Wilcox was able to delivery a box full of colorful herbs and vegetables to the Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Food Pantries at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Advent Church in Clinton.

In addition to growing for their own families, gardeners are swapping vegetables with fellow gardeners and each week a volunteer will make a delivery of surplus produce to the food pantry. The 24 plots located at the Parmelee Farm are thriving thanks to good soil, full sun, the solar water pump and a community of green thumbs. Gardens Coordinator Peg Scofield said she is extremely proud of the gardens' progress. "I knew the first year would present its share of challenges, but the gardeners and community volunteers have responded by rolling up their sleeves and sharing the load to make the project an unqualified success."

Governor Rell Reappoints Former Fire Chief to State Panel
Governor M. Jodi Rell yesterday announced that she has reappointed former Killingworth Fire Chief Alfred Dudek, Jr. to serve on the state's Enhanced 9-1-1 Commission. The Commission advises the State in the planning, design, implementation and coordination of the statewide emergency 9-1-1 telephone system.

Enhanced 911 is a special emergency response system for people with disabilities. When an enhanced 911 call is received by a 911 dispatcher, the person's address and pertinent information about that person's disability is displayed so that the responders are aware of any special needs at that address.

Dudek served as Killingworth's Fire Chief for 17 years between 1982 and 2006. He has been employed by the Connecticut Light and Power Company for nearly 30 years. A member of the Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association and an Adjunct Instructor at the Connecticut Fire Academy, he served honorably in the U.S. Navy. He has served on the Killingworth Board of Selectmen since 2004 and has served on the Enhanced 911 Commission since 1999.

"Chief Dudek has had many years of experience in dealing with emergency management issues," Governor Rell said. "That experience has made him a very valuable member of this Commission and I thank him for his continued willingness to serve and protect the residents of the State of Connecticut."

Dudek will serve at the pleasure of the Governor for a term ending June 30, 2011 or until a successor is appointed and has qualified, whichever is longer.

Sun Shines on Obama Fundraiser
Someday Farm was the perfect Killingworth setting for Saturday's Barack Obama fundraiser. The sun shone on green fields, cheerful tents, and grazing horses. Seventy supporters and four well-behaved dogs enjoyed timely conversation and varied refreshments. Cantico, a group of musicians from Chester, donated an afternoon of wonderful live music.

The event was organized by Pat Lafayette and hosted by Pat, Pat Worth and Michael Young. Susan Dean coordinated the support of the Killingworth Democratic Town Committee, and Amy Etra graciously caught it all on camera. Obama himself showed up toward the end of the party. He was much thinner than usual but the crowd was eager to have their picture taken with him nonetheless. The event raised $1400 for Obama for America.
