Wednesday, September 03, 2008State Senator Ed Meyer, who is Senate chairman of the legislature's Environment Committee, received the first Environmental Leadership Award from The Watershed Partnership on the Guilford Green yesterday.
The Watershed Partnership - a non-profit organization promoting safe, healthy, livable communities in Connecticut - recognized Senator Meyer for his role in championing the passage of pesticide legislation that bans the application of lawn care pesticides at day care centers, elementary schools and middle schools, except in health emergencies. In 2005, Sen. Meyer helped write and pass Senate Bill 916, which prohibits the application of lawn care pesticides at day care centers and elementary schools except in health emergencies as determined by the superintendent of schools. That bill passed the legislature on a 164-18 vote and was signed into law by the governor on July 13, 2005. In 2007, Sen. Meyer helped write and pass House Bill 5234, which extended that pesticides ban to grades 6, 7 and 8. That bill passed the legislature on a 180-2 vote and was signed into law by the governor on June 18, 2007. ![]() (left to right) Guilford First Selectman Carl Balestracci, Jr. Dr. Jerry Silbert, Executive Director, The Watershed Partnership "Mo," Sen. Children's Librarian Gayle Byrne said it would break her heart to see it go to the dump. Do you have a child's room or playroom that needs a beautiful piece of art or conversation piece? The hive stands about 6 feet high and about 8 feet across the top branch. Contact Gayle at 663-2000 or stop by the library to have a look.

Monday, September 01, 2008![]() Sunday, August 31, 2008![]() "We had an amazing spring with two full Tribes meeting for five weeks," explained Sarah Suatoni, Killingworth resident and co-founder of the Tween Tribe. "We had overwhelming demand for more Tween Tribe programming in Killingworth, so we're launching two year-long Tribe starting in September." Tween Tribe is an ongoing after-school group created by Suatoni and her partner Macdara MacColl where girls learn to conquer cliques, create community and celebrate themselves through original stories, creative arts, performance, dance, movement and meaningful conversations. "Tween Tribe is every parent's dream and every girl's fantasy; a place where imagination, communication, feelings and friendship prevail," Suatoni said. Pediatric Psychiatrist Dr. Ann Hess concurs: "Tween Tribe is an innovative, creative, effective program giving girls the essential tools of insight and expression key for their success as tweens, teens, and adults." "Tweens are being hit with so much media messaging about sexuality, body image, popularity and attitude. Take the latest Gossip Girl campaign. It says: "Every Parent's Nightmare and Wildly Inappropriate,' " Suatoni explained. "Tween Tribe takes the opposite approach. Our premise is that girls want a place to belong, feel good about themselves and get along. If we can teach girls how to find this they do not need to become every parent's nightmare in order to find acceptance and esteem." For more information and to register, parents can visit TweenTribe.com. The site also features a selection of Tween Tribe original stories. The company also publishes an e-newsletter for parents and educators called The Parent Tribe. |
