After three years of planning, fundraising and more fundraising, the project to begin installing stadium lights at the Haddam Killingworth High School track began in earnest this month as over 50 volunteers helped run 900-feet of power line that will eventually bring light to the track and soccer field and the future football field. Members of the high school football teams, their parents, helped dig a 4-foot deep trench to lay the conduit for the power cable. Originally planned for the existing football field, the project quickly changed course and targeted the soccer field and track as the location for the lights, allowing a greater number of athletes and other facility users the ability to hold evening events. The plan doesn't just stop at lights. To successfully hold night games and evening events bleachers will be installed and the concession stand will be relocated. The HKHS Touchdown Club would like to thank the many people and organizations that donated food and equipment during the initial construction phase: Haddam Feed store, Country market, Pizzeria DaVinci, and special thanks to the CL&P, Scovil Landscaping and The Madore Brothers for all the heavy duty equipment. ![]() By Rob Artus
Volunteers Needed I have served on three Town Committees and have found the experiences fulfilling and meaningful. There are several committees in Killingworth that desperately need members and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage folks to get involved. Most committees meet once a month and all provide valuable service to the Town. It's a great way to get involved, meet new people and contribute to the community. A long time ago, someone told me I should stop complaining from the sidelines and get involved, and I am very glad I did - it has been a very rewarding experience. You don't have to be politically active and in fact in my experience, there is actually very little "politics" involved in the working of these committees - it's just people who care about Killingworth rolling up their sleeves, working together and getting involved. HK Girls Soccer defeated East Hampton, 3-1. It took just twelve minutes for the Cougars to score. Ali Armstrong working from the left side of the field provided Siobhan Blancaflor with the ball she needed to score HK's first goal of the game. Allie Rand scoring in the 13th minute gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead at the end of the half. Blancaflor scored again in the 46th minute of the game of an assist from Megan Linsenbigler. It was almost a shut out but East Hampton rallied and scored in the final seconds of the game. East Hampton had 10 shots on goal vs HK's 11. Alyssa Hunt played the majority of the game in goal and was credited with 5 saves. Thursday, September 18, 2008The Town Clerk's Office has received a set of keys found recently on Wolf Hollow Road. They can be claimed at the Town Offices. Town Clerk's hours are: Mon-Fri: 8 am -12, 1-4 p.m.
The Town Office Building Study Committee is recommending the renovation of the current office building and the addition of an open floor plan building to alleviate the cramped spacing in the Town Offices. TOBSC Chair Gwenne Lally said the first stage would be the expansion of the Town Clerk's Office. According to the New Haven Register, while awaiting more specific figures, the committee's report projects a cost of about $100,000 for a 12-by-20-foot addition to the office, with reconfigured entryway, work stations and counter, as well as needed climate control equipment for the two vaults.
The committee proposed building a post and beam barn-like structure with an open modular floor plan to replace the aging portable units. Lally said the structure would keep with the character of the town and could be designed by local volunteers. Lally said the 2007 estimated cost for the entire project was $800,000, including the new structure and an addition to the town clerk's office. She said the costs continue to rise so the committee requested several months to complete a realistic cost projection. The Board of Selectmen continued the TOBSC's charge to plan out the project. Selectman Fred Dudek said they would like to let the committee "run with it". The goal is to get an accurate estimate of the cost of the renovation and construction for the new budget season and possibly roll it into a bonding package. Walter J. Photo courtesy. S. Mazzotta ![]() Mr. Bayreuther has been the Director of Music Ministry at the First Congregational Church since the Autumn of 2005, having previously served at the First Congregational Church of New London. He has performed numerous organ and piano recitals around the state and has been the recipient of several organ scholarships including the Roberta Bitgood Scholarship. Awarded the Colleague Certification from the American Guild of Organists in 2004, Mr. Bayreuther has been a member and has served on the Executive Boards of the New London and New Haven County Chapters of the AGO. The Thomas G. Shepherd Memorial Organ was built by the M. P. Möller Organ Company of Hagerstown, Maryland in 1930. Opus 5713 is a three-manual instrument with 22 ranks and 1,548 pipes. In early 2004, the organ narrowly escaped ruin when the ceiling collapsed onto the pipework and mechanism during the restoration of the church's historic tower. A quick rescue effort was mounted to safely place the organ's pipework in trays and cover the mechanism to prevent further damage to the fabric of the organ. By the end of 2004, the ceiling had been re-plastered and the pipework cleaned and repaired. Today, the Shepard Memorial Organ once again serves the congregation of First Church with reliable distinction. There is a $10 recommended donation for this event; proceeds will benefit the Music at the Meetinghouse concert series. A reception will follow the concert. Tuesday, September 16, 2008Two years ago the KES-PTO decided it had the ability and resources to raise enough money to replace the playground equipment on the upper fields of the Killingworth Elementary School. Yesterday, Committee Chair Michele Early officially opened the fabulous new playground.
The idea of a new playground was kicked into high gear when the family of George Pellegrini asked that donations be made in his memory to the Playground Fund. With that start, the committee hosted a successful community pasta dinner and the word started to spread. The KES Holiday Shopping Night donated part of its proceeds; The Fitness Connection and Shoreline Focus on Fitness ran Saturday morning fitness sessions to benefit the project; Rep. Brian O'Connor helped secure a donation from State Farm Insurance; The Killingworth Women's Organization hosted a Wine Tasting; Beth Lipuma donated a portion of the Jack Foundation monies; KES Custodian Lance Fredericksen offered to shave his head in exchange for donations; The Lion's Club made a significant donation; Region 17 removed the old equipment; Miracle Recreation Equipment gave a donation and many many individuals donated to the events and donated funds. The playground, built to benefit all the community's children, includes rock climbing walls, slides, swings and boundless swings and much more! The PTO hopes that future donations can be used to add benches to the playscape. Congratulations to the KES-PTO for its successful community minded effort and its ability to bring together so many interests in support of our children. ![]() Michele Early addresses the KES community, supporters and friends. ![]() The KES kindergarten classes break in the new playscape Monday, September 15, 2008![]() ![]() After the race, enjoy the post-race refreshments and activities for the whole family!
