October 14th is the date for the next meeting of Killingworth's Tuesday Book Discussion Group. Wallace Stegner's novel,"Crossing to Safety" is the selection. Stegner founded the Stanford University creative writing program and is often called "the dean of western writers." In a New York Times Book Review, Doris Grumbach said of the book's characters "Nothing in their lives is lost or wasted, suffering becomes an enriching benediction, and life itself a luminous experience."

The discussion begins at 1:00 in the Killingworth Library meeting room and newcomers are always welcome.
HKHS Honor Society Ping Pong Tourney
The National Honor Society at Haddam-Killingworth High School sponsored its third annual Ping Pong Tournament from September 30-October 2. Proceeds this year will benefit Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss.

The tournament was held during lunch over three days and generated enthusiastic crowds. The 32 students and faculty members who competed made a donation to the charity in order to play. The winner of the 2008 tournament is Spanish teacher, Juan Jose Vazquez-Caballero, who took home the title for the third consecutive year. The tournament raised $100 for the charity. To the Editor:
Do you have toys in good condition that your kids never look at? Do you have gifts that have a place of honor in your closet? If so, you should probably keep reading...

My mom and other moms in town are working on a project for inner-city Hartford kids. They are collecting toys, beauty products, games etc that are in really good condition. They will be going to the Hartford Boys and Girls Club to do their project they call Holiday Shopping night. Their project lets kids that wouldn't be able to buy their families gifts for the holidays buy them. The prices range from .25 to 2.00 for the nicest gifts. The kids can also purchase these gifts with "coupons" they have earned for doing there homework! and doing good deeds. They are working with the people in the Hartford Boys and Girls Club, so it is only for kids involved in the club.

They will be having a collection drive in the parking lot of KES October 25th between 9-12 am. They are in need of men's gifts and more kids' gifts. Just remember that all the stuff must be in REALLY good condition. There will be flyers handed out at the Middle School and the Elementary school sometime this week.
Thanks!
